Chapter description[]

Fireheart leads ThunderClan back to camp and is still appalled by the destruction that the forest fire caused. Sandstorm asks him if the camp will ever be fully restored, and Fireheart tells her that it will be one day, exhausted at the thought of all the hard work that will have to go towards rebuilding.
He finds Brackenfur, Longtail, and Dustpelt awake. Brackenfur tells Fireheart that they have been expecting Tigerclaw all night, and their deputy tells them that Tigerstar is now the leader of ShadowClan. Brackenfur and Longtail voice their disbelief, and Whitestorm tells them that Tigerstar must have seemed like a blessing from StarClan in the eyes of ShadowClan, who had been ravaged by disease and poor leadership after Brokentail's defeat. Fireheart agrees and explains that Runningnose received an omen that said a great leader would arrive. Brackenfur protests that Tigerstar is a traitor and Fireheart reminds him that ShadowClan is not aware of his betrayal. Other cats begin emerging from their dens, crowding around Fireheart with questions. He tells them that Whitestorm will explain what occurred at the Gathering and then they will need a dawn patrol. Dustpelt volunteers himself and Ashpaw, with Mousefur and Cloudpaw offering to go as well. Fireheart tells the rest of the Clan to go to sleep as they will need hunting patrols later. Darkstripe questions what Fireheart will do and the orange tom says that he needs to go talk to Bluestar.
On the way to her den, he meets Cinderpelt and asks how their leader is faring. The gray medicine cat tells him that she did not sleep last night, and Fireheart says that Bluestar is not going to like the news that the Gathering brought. He explains what happened to Cinderpelt and says that there is nothing he can do and that ShadowClan's leader is not ThunderClan's business. She seems to disagree, and he reassures her that they will keep an eye on the borders, but right now, he is mainly worried about Bluestar's reaction. Cinderpelt replies that it will only make her worse and that she wishes Yellowfang was still here. Fireheart comforts his former apprentice and feels empty as he, too, misses the grumpy old medicine cat. They part ways and Fireheart finds Bluestar crouching on a pile of bedding, staring at something invisible.
Fireheart calls Bluestar's name and pads further into the den. Initially the old she-cat seems confused but quickly recovers, asking what he wants. Fireheart tells her the bad news and Bluestar leaps up instantly, saying that is impossible. Fireheart reassures her that it is unfortunately the truth. Bluestar ridicules all of the other Clans for allowing Tigerstar to be leader of ShadowClan, and Fireheart tells her that they do not know about his treachery, but this does nothing to quell her rage. She insults StarClan, saying that they do not care about her or ThunderClan. Fireheart attempts to calm her down, but she cuts him off and tells him that their Clan is doomed because Tigerstar will destroy them. Fireheart says that Tigerstar did not seem hostile, but Bluestar gives a harsh laugh and calls Fireheart a fool for believing Tigerstar's friendliness. She claims that Tigerstar will be here by leaf-fall, but ThunderClan will be ready.
She orders Fireheart to double the patrols and have a constant watch on the ShadowClan border. Fireheart tries to object and says that they do not have enough warriors to carry out her orders, but she accuses Fireheart of being a traitor. He vehemently tries to convince her that he is trustworthy and she relaxes. She lays down and tells Fireheart to send out the patrols now, and Fireheart agrees to it, giving up on convincing her otherwise.
