"It’s been a tough day. But don’t be sad. A few troublemakers have left, that’s all. This is your chance to build the loyal, strong group you always wanted. Let Thunder go if he wants. His only ambition is to fill his belly. He will never be the leader that you are."

Chapter description[]

Clear Sky bounds down the hill with Star Flower ahead of him. After they both reach the bottom, Star Flower asks if he still believes he's more familiar with the forest than she is, assuming he's never been here before, but Clear Sky tells her that he has. The golden tabby meows to keep an eye out for the snakes, surprising Clear Sky, and Star Flower tells him One Eye taught her how to hunt them. She asks Clear Sky if he is willing to trust her, and the gray tom worries about Thunder, who isn't approving of her. Star Flower suggest to leave for camp, and Clear Sky leaves, knowing he has a duty as a leader. Back at camp, Blossom is arguing over a mouse with Leaf, while Milkweed is protecting her kits. The leader asks what is happening, and Leaf tells Clear Sky that Milkweed is eating what he caught, which confuses the gray tom. Clear Sky asks the black-and-white tom who told him to hunt, and Leaf replies that Thunder did. The leader turns to his son, but Thunder tells his father he organizes the patrols. Leaf argues it is leaf-bare, and every cat must hunt but Clear Sky meows the prey must recover from the illness first, so they won't go hungry later on. He meows this group is only for cats that want to stay, as silence swept over the camp.
Thunder meows he should leave then, horrifying Clear Sky. He asks why, and the ginger tom meows he can't watch cats starve just because Clear Sky wants it. The gray leader replies he will be right later on, and Thunder retorts that's the only thing he wants, and he wants to prove he's the smartest cat. Leaf, Lightning Tail, Owl Eyes, Cloud Spots and Pink Eyes decide to join Thunder's group, but Sparrow Fur stays. Clear Sky realizes he lost control of his group, and asks to speak to his son privately. Clear Sky asks what is going on, and Thunder tells his father he isn't interested in what he thinks, and he makes stupid decisions. The gray tom realizes he means Star Flower, and after Thunder tells him he should exile her, Clear Sky meows he controls himself. Thunder points out that this is his flaw and he is too stubborn, but the leader tells him he's only jealous. The ginger tom meows he isn't like One Eye, and Star Flower would never choose him. Clear Sky is shocked, and watches Thunder lead his new group our of his camp, feeling grief overwhelm him. Star Flower reassures him to not be depressed, and Thunder would never be a better leader than him. Clear Sky buries his muzzle into Star Flower's fur, thinking finally, he had a worthy mate.
