"Every one of us is risking our lives. And our future in StarClan. But if we fail, our Clans will lose more. That's why they are sending us on this mission. Why else would ThunderClan even think of risking an elder so loved and valued as Graystripe? As deputy of WindClan, you've proved your worth time and time again. And you're an honored warrior. You fought valiantly against Darktail, and no one will forgot your courage and strength. You're the youngest volunteer. Which means you're risking more than any of us. You have many moons as a warrior ahead of you. You may yet decide to take a mate and have kits. It isn't just your future in StarClan, but your future beside the lake. We are taking this risk because it is unthinkable not to do so. We must stop Ashfur and save StarClan. |

Chapter description[]
- Shadowsight accompanies Lightleap on her journey to the Moonpool, knowing that although the dark brown tabby she-cat didn't need an escort, he wanted to say goodbye. At the sacred pool, Shadowsight spots Graystripe and Squirrelflight, Mistystar and Reedwhisker, Crowfeather and Breezepelt, and Tree, Violetshine, and Needleclaw. Tree greets the ShadowClan medicine cat and Lightleap, while Mistystar wonders who is going. Lightleap steps up, while Shadowsight notes that Dark Forest had gone through so much change that not even trainees like Breezepelt could give much advice. The gray tabby tom scans the Clan warriors, asking who is going.
- Mistystar, Violetshine, and Crowfeather nod while their kin glance at them with anxiety in their eyes. Shadowsight warns them that the dark water will kill them perniciously, instructing them on how to get to the barrier between StarClan and the Place of No Stars. The ShadowClan medicine cat reminds them that the spirit cats are under Ashfur's control, and that if they try to attack the Clan cats, the dark warrior is nearby. Reedwhisker tells Mistystar that she is RiverClan leader, and that she may die on this mission. The pale blue-gray she-cat informs Reedwhisker that as deputy, he is more than ready to take her place.
- Turning to the cats from the other Clans, Mistystar reminds them of even though their lives are at risk, even more is at risk on their mission, as if they fail, the Clans will suffer more than they will. Praising Graystripe, the RiverClan leader states that ThunderClan would never risk an elder so beloved such as Graystripe unless in dire need. Turning to Crowfeather, Mistystar reminds the surrounding Clan cats that he is WindClan's deputy, informing them that he has proved his worth repeatedly. The pale blue-gray she-cat reminds the others of Violetshine's bravery in the battle against Darktail. To Lightleap, Mistystar states that as she is the youngest, she is giving up the most, including a future mate, a long life as a warrior, and a chance to raise kits. The RiverClan leader finishes speaking by reminding them all that Squirrelflight was right the day before when she had said that because of the Clans' faith in StarClan, they are true warriors, and that she was wrong when she dismissed the idea.
- Graystripe informs Flurry that they are ready, so the orange-and-white tabby she-cat tells the cats that are not traveling into the Place of No Stars to leave so they can begin the ceremony. They say their goodbyes while Needleclaw comforts Shadowsight's doubts of Rootspring and Bristlefrost not returning by reminding him that the ceremony will work, and Lightleap and Violetshine will get out alive as well. Squirrelflight commands the group to wait, while the ShadowClan medicine cat turns around to see Lightleap and Flurry padding towards them. The Sister informs the group that Lightleap's mind is not ready to hear their singing, and that she cannot be a part of the mission. Shadowsight comforts his sister while Squirrelflight volunteers to go, but Tree rejects the idea, reminding the cats to think of Bramblestar's reaction if they allow his mate to go to the Dark Forest again.
- Breezepelt volunteers, but Squirrelflight states that their kin would suffer more if they lose two cats, glancing at Reedwhisker as well. Shadowsight volunteers, reckoning that ShadowClan should have a paw in this mission. The Clan cats agree, so Flurry takes him to the Moonpool. Before going, Lightleap tells Shadowsight to return safely, and as the others say their goodbyes, the ShadowClan medicine cat hears the Sisters' voices as he composes himself to reenter the Dark Forest.
