Chapter description[]

Rootspring wails for Bristlefrost and attempts to dive into the dark water, but his mother stops him, insisting she is already gone. Rootspring's mind is frozen and he looks into the water to see only her last air bubbles arrive to the surface. Bristlefrost is gone. Violetshine presses close to her son to comfort him, but Rootspring can hardly feel or hear anything. Around him, the battle stops as Ashfur's possessed spirits regain control of themselves and turn on the remaining Dark Forest cats. Stemleaf gleefully cheers that Ashfur is dead, but Violetshine sharply rounds on him that Bristlefrost is dead. Stemleaf is shocked, and one by one the other cats turn their gaze towards the still dark water. The Dark Forest cats leave under the sharp gazes of the warriors.
Leafpool arrives with joyous news that the barrier between StarClan and the Dark Forest is gone, and StarClan's connection with the living world is restored. The dark water begins to disappear, and Rootspring hopes that it might leave Bristlefrost's body behind. It doesn't, and Rootspring presses his muzzle to the ground to listen to the Earth, hoping to find Bristlefrost just as the Sisters had taught him. Despite his attempts, he cannot find her, knowing that her body and spirit were gone forever.
