Chapter description

Upon Stormfur and Feathertail's insistence, Leopardstar allows Sasha and her kits, Hawk and Moth, to join RiverClan. A quarter-moon later, Feathertail reflects how Sasha is fitting in better than Feathertail ever has, and she and Leopardstar discuss how Sasha is hesitant to officially join the Clan. While watching Hawk and Moth play with other kits, Hawk falls into the river and Feathertail saves him. Sasha thanks Feathertail for saving her son's life and explains how their brother, Tadpole, died drowning earlier in newleaf, and they've been looking for a home ever since.

Sasha and Feathertail quickly become friends, and Feathertail teaches her kits how to properly swim. She starts to wonder if this is what being part of a Clan is like, and confides with Stormfur that she aspires to become one of the kit's mentors. While watching the kits play in the river, Sasha asks why Feathertail seems so distant with her Clanmates, and Feathertail explains how after Tigerstar's reign, it became harder to trust her Clanmates who supported Tigerstar and wanted her dead. By greenleaf, Hawk and Moth are made apprentices; Mistyfoot is named Mothpaw's mentor, and Leopardstar chooses to mentor Hawkpaw herself. Feathertail, despite reassuring Sasha that her kits are in good paws, is dubious of Leopardstar's intentions, and monitors the apprentices' training.

Feathertail begins to integrate herself back into the Clan with Sasha at her side, but notices Sasha's reaction when Mosspelt warns two kits to be careful or else Tigerstar will haunt them. Feathertail asks about this, and Sasha reveals that Tigerstar is the father of her kits and she will always love him. She presses Feathertail not to tell the Clan out of fear for the safety of her kits, and comments that Feathertail was also punished for who her parents were. Feathertail agrees to keep her secret, but splits ties with Sasha, feeling betrayed. She notices how much Hawkpaw is beginning to look like his father, and debates what might happen if she didn't tell her Clan the truth.

At the Gathering, Feathertail and Stormfur catch up with their father, Graystripe, who is speaking on behalf of Firestar who is still ill with greencough. While Stormfur excuses himself to speak with Brambleclaw and Ashfur, Feathertail explains to her father that she still finds it difficult to trust her Clanmates and Leopardstar. Graystripe offers them a place in ThunderClan, but Feathertail knows Stormfur wishes to stay in RiverClan. The next morning, Sasha tells Feathertail that she's leaving; Sasha had declined Leopardstar's offer to officially join the Clan in case ShadowClan recognizes her and realizes her kits were Tigerstar's. Sasha fears the Clans will either drive them away or kill them, and begs Feathertail to not tell anyone the truth about her kits. Feathertail, furious, vows to keep her word and watches Sasha leave.
