"All the prophecies StarClan had sent since he had become a medicine cat had told him to do one thing: bring the five Clans together to keep them strong. And now StarClan had gone to extraordinary measures to bring them this message—they must save ShadowClan. But ShadowClan couldn't survive without a savior, and if Rowanclaw wasn't up to the job, who would be?"
Alderheart's thoughts on the future of ShadowClan in Darkest Night, pages 302-303

A Vision of Shadows is the sixth arc of the Warriors series.[2] It follows Alderheart, Violetshine, and Twigbranch as the fifth Clan comes to the lake and ShadowClan falls apart. This is the third arc to feature protagonists from outside of ThunderClan.

Concept development[]

"Full of epic adventure and thrilling intrigue, the beginning of this [sixth] Warriors series is the perfect introduction for readers new to the Warriors world. And for dedicated fans, it's a long-awaited return to the era of Bramblestar's ThunderClan, after the events of Omen of the Stars."
―Blurb for The Apprentice's Quest
Following the completion of Omen of the Stars, a new team of editors began working on the series around 2011. Dawn of the Clans, the fifth arc, was established as a prequel series to give the new editing team some breathing room to decide how to resume following the end of Firestar's story.[blog 1] The sixth arc was first teased by Kate Cary on her blog in February 2015 with the working arc title, StarClan's Promise, and Cherith writing the first book.[blog 2] On March 31st, Kate posted a draft of the allegiances for The Apprentice's Quest on her blog. The working title of the arc was changed to A Vision of Shadows, and the sneak peak revealed that the arc would take place roughly eighteen months after Bramblestar's Storm.[blog 3] These changes include the introduction of numerous characters in each of the Clans, including the reveal of Bramblestar and Squirrelflight's kits: Alderpaw and Sparkpaw. Kate took comments on errors and suggestions to formulate an updated version of the allegiances, posted on April 16th.[blog 4] The only discrepancy between this version and the published version of the allegiances is the omission of Ferntail, who was described as one of Emberfoot and Sedgewhisker's kits and was renamed to Fernpaw.[blog 5] This would also mark the transition of the series establishing comprehensive allegiances, unlike the previous books that omitted several unnamed background characters. Furthermore, this arc continued the trend of including extra bonus chapters for Barnes & Noble copies of the first five books. However, unlike Dawn of the Clans, these versions were not included in the paperback reprints. You can find the exclusive bonus scenes here.
While drafting the arc's main prophecy, the story team originally composed "Only the cat who finds what is lost can prosper." However, this was changed in a late draft of the first book as it "lacked the heft and mysticism of the previous Warriors prophecies." The final version of the prophecy, ""Embrace what you find in the shadows, for only they can clear the sky." is in reference to SkyClan joining the Clans at the lake.[3] The Apprentice's Quest was released on March 15th, 2016, and it featured Bramblestar and Squirrelflight's son Alderpaw as the main protagonist.
On September 7th, 2015, Kate revealed she was currently working on book two, which was called The Lost Clan,[blog 6] though this was later changed to Thunder and Shadow.[blog 7] Thunder and Shadow was released on September 6th, 2016, and it featured Alderpaw, Twigkit, and Violetkit as the main protagonists, which would continue for the rest of the arc. This book also featured the a point of view from ShadowClan through Violetkit. Furthermore, Kate also included several members of BlogClan into this book—Whorlpelt, Snaketooth, Flowerstem, Wavepaw, and Cypresspaw[blog 8]—though Wavepaw and Cypresspaw would later be written out by the editors.[blog 9] On May 19th, 2015, Kate revealed the working title for the third book, The Shattered Sky,[blog 10] though this would later be changed to Shattered Sky. Shattered Sky was released on April 11th, 2017. Furthermore, the Super Edition Hawkwing's Journey, which was released on November 1st, 2016, explores SkyClan's journey to find the Clans leading up to A Vision of Shadows. This book provides additional context to the main arc's storyline, including introducing Hawkwing, Darktail, Rain, and Pebbleshine.[4]
On August 1st, 2016, Kate revealed the working title for the fifth book, Darkest Night.[blog 11] The book was released on November 7th, 2017. Furthermore, this was the first main series book to feature a point of view from SkyClan through Violetpaw and Twigpaw. The title of the fifth book, River of Fire, was originally posted on Kate's Facebook, with an official reveal on Edelweiss's catalogue for HarperCollins on June 30th, 2017.[5] The book was officially released on April 10th, 2018. Similarly with the previous Super Edition, Tigerheart's Shadow, which was released on September 5th, 2017, provided important context to the storylines within Darkest Night and River of Fire. The book explores where Tigerheart and Dovewing disappeared to, which was briefly mentioned in the main series books, including the birth of their kits and their journey back home. Furthermore, Tigerheart's Shadow was published before Darkest Night, revealing Rowanstar's death and Tigerheart succeeding him as leader of ShadowClan prematurely.[6] In addition, the staggered release dates led to an inconsistency between Slatefur and Rippletail. In Tigerheart's Shadow, Rippletail escapes the Kin and is one of the cats that return to ShadowClan,[7] while in River of Fire, he is a kittypet, and Slatefur takes his place in the patrol back to ShadowClan.[8] Kate later confirmed that Rippletail had become a kittypet, as in River of Fire, and Slatefur is the one who is actually meant to be on the patrol in Tigerheart's Shadow.[blog 12]
The title for the final book, The Raging Storm, was revealed on November 14th, 2017.[blog 13] The Raging Storm was officially released on November 6th, 2018. Furthermore, the novella Tawnypelt's Clan, which was released on April 6th, 2019, explores the events in ShadowClan between River of Fire and The Raging Storm, including Tawnypelt's decision to step down from deputy and a brief journey to the Tribe of Rushing Water.[9] Prior to the release of Lost Stars, the Warriors website released an article summarizing the events of The Raging Storm. This would be the first article in the "Journey so far" series chronicling recent releases.[10] In addition, the release of the Warriors website would signify a transition from asking Kate Cary questions on her blog to website reveals by the editing team.

Box set blurb[]

EMBRACE WHAT YOU FIND IN THE SHADOWS, FOR ONLY THEY CAN CLEAR THE SKY.
For many moons, the warrior cat Clans have lived in peace in their territories around the lake. But when ThunderClan apprentice Alderpaw begins to receive mysterious visions from StarClan, he stumbles upon a dark secret from the Clans' past. A secret that must be brought to light if they are to defend themselves against the dark shadows gathering on the horizon—and even in their own midst.

Summary[]

Alderpaw, a ThunderClan apprentice and the son of Bramblestar and Squirrelflight, wants to do his best to become a warrior but is told his destiny is to become a medicine cat. StarClan sends him on a quest to bring back SkyClan, meeting a mischievous ShadowClan apprentice named Needlepaw on the way, but when they arrive they instead find a rogue called Darktail and his Kin. Alderpaw and Needlepaw also find two abandoned kits, Violetkit and Twigkit, who could be the answer to the prophecy: "Embrace what you find in the shadows, for only they can clear the sky". Twigkit lives in ThunderClan with Alderpaw while Violetkit is taken to ShadowClan with Needlepaw. The Kin start attacking the Clans, but Needlepaw befriends the rogues and takes Violetkit with her when she leaves to join them with other young cats from ShadowClan. Needlepaw renames herself as Needletail. Violetkit escapes back to ShadowClan and is made Violetpaw, and Twigpaw receives her apprentice name too. Yellowcough plagues ShadowClan as Onestar refuses to give up his herbs, until his deputy, Harespring, and medicine cat, Kestrelflight, hand it over behind his back. The Kin then attack ShadowClan, win, and take control of it. Rowanstar, Tawnypelt, and Tigerheart flee to ThunderClan.
The rest of the Clans organize an attack against the Kin, but Onestar retreats, causing the other Clans to lose the battle. In an attempt to become leader, Rain tries to kill Darktail but he is instead murdered by Darktail. Darktail attacks and drives out an already weakened RiverClan, but keeps the injured as prisoners. Twigpaw leaves to find SkyClan, believing they are her kin. Needletail is made a prisoner because Violetpaw told Darktail, while being interrogated, that Needletail gave herbs to RiverClan. Violetpaw helps ThunderClan smuggle out prisoners with some success, but when Darktail finds out he tries to drown Needletail to punish her. Needletail attacks Darktail, allowing Violetpaw to escape. With the combined effort of ThunderClan, some former ShadowClan cats, and the prisoners, the Kin are driven out of RiverClan and into only ShadowClan. After being presumed dead, Twigpaw returns with SkyClan and her father, Hawkwing. WindClan finally opens its borders and agrees to join the fight. Onestar reveals that Darktail is his son, and the Kin are attacked; Onestar and Darktail drown in the lake while fighting each other.
Hawkwing offers Violetpaw and Twigpaw a place in SkyClan, who are given a piece of ShadowClan's land, and they are given mentors. Twigpaw befriends Finpaw. Willowshine receives a prophecy about a six-toed cat. The SkyClan cats send a patrol to find missing their Clanmates, and they find many and Tree, a six-toed cat. Dovewing and Tigerheart go missing, and because of Rowanstar's failing leadership, ShadowClan merges with SkyClan. Leafstar gives Violetpaw the warrior name Violetshine, but Twigpaw refuses her own warrior name; she leaves to return to ThunderClan because she did not feel like she belonged in SkyClan, and is joined by Finpaw. Sleekwhisker and Yarrowleaf, two of the ShadowClan apprentices who originally joined the Kin, ask to join SkyClan, but are initially refused. Leafstar feels constantly undermined by Tawnypelt, and Tree is given the role of mediator. Sleekwhisker takes Tawnypelt's and Yarrowleaf's kits hostage with cats from the Kin, and they are rescued, but Rowanclaw dies. Twigpaw and Finpaw get their warrior names, Twigbranch and Finleap.
Tigerheart returns with Dovewing and their kits, but dies next to the Moonpool. StarClan revives him, and gives him his nine lives, and ShadowClan reforms under Tigerstar's leadership. The newly-named Tigerstar wants SkyClan's territory back to support their now larger numbers, but SkyClan has nowhere else to go. This becomes a long-lasting argument that eventually turns in a fight. Juniperclaw, ShadowClan's deputy, tries to poison SkyClan cats with deathberries; his actions are revealed when Tigerstar renounces his deputyship. Leafstar decides SkyClan will return to the gorge, but her Clan is brought back and Violetshine becomes pregnant with Tree's kits. Shadowkit and Violetshine almost drown but are saved by Juniperclaw, who dies in the process. The Clans decide that SkyClan will be staying, permanently.

The Apprentice's Quest[]

The medicine cats from all four Clans have a shared vision and receive the prophecy; Embrace what you find in the shadows, for only they can clear the sky. During the vision, Jayfeather catches the glimpse of a white tipped tail and believes Alderkit, son of Bramblestar and Squirrelflight, is involved. Alderkit begins his training as warrior apprentice, but later transfers to Jayfeather as a medicine cat apprentice, after having a vision telling him it is Alderpaw's destiny. Alderpaw has a vision of the SkyClan cats, and he, his sister, Sandstorm, Molewhisker, and Cherryfall set out to find the fifth Clan, with Needlepaw tagging along a bit later.
Sandstorm is wounded while trying to cross over a barbed fence and dies as a result of her injuries. After her death, the cats decide they should try to find the gorge on their own to honor the dead she-cat's wishes. They continue on, and eventually find a cat who claims to be the leader of SkyClan, named Darktail. The patrol eventually finds out that they are not and drove the real SkyClan out, and escape from their camp. On the way home, the cats are separated after crossing a river. Alderpaw and Needlepaw find two kits beneath a Thunderpath, and Alderpaw believes they are what the prophecy meant, having been found in shadow, and they will clear the sky. With no mother found, the two apprentices name them Twigkit and Violetkit and take them back to the the lake, where they stay in ThunderClan's care. At the next Gathering, however, ShadowClan demands ThunderClan give them a kit, and so Violetkit is separated from her sister.

Thunder and Shadow[]

When Littlecloud dies, Leafpool goes over to ShadowClan to train Puddlepaw to become the next medicine cat. Twigkit and Violetkit are settling into their new Clans, though Violetkit is having a harder time as the ShadowClan cats are not very friendly, but makes friends with Needlepaw. Meanwhile, Darktail and his rogues attack WindClan and Furzepelt dies. However, Needlepaw discovers the rogues in ShadowClan territory and makes friends with them. The rogues try to join ShadowClan twice and are turned away both times, at which Needlepaw and a couple of other young cats decide to leave to join the rogues. Needlepaw takes Violetkit with her, and when the other Clans find out, they rebuke Rowanstar for allowing it to happen.
Violetkit escapes from the rogues and returns to ShadowClan, where there is a sickness named yellowcough. Onestar refuses to give them the herb that grows only on the moor, so Twigpaw is held hostage in the hope that ThunderClan can persuade Onestar to get the herb, lungwort. However, this does not work, and Crowfrost releases Twigpaw. ShadowClan becomes even more sick, with Crowfrost dying, until Kestrelflight and Harespring secretly pick the lungwort and give it to the other Clans. After ShadowClan is cured from the yellowcough, Darktail's group invades ShadowClan and takes over, with Rowanstar, Tigerheart, and Tawnypelt leaving to join ThunderClan. When Twigpaw finds out that Violetpaw is still with the rogues, she visits ShadowClan and persuades Needletail and Rain to let her see Violetpaw, but is chased off after a brief conversation.

Shattered Sky[]

All four Clans participate in a battle against Darktail's rogues; however, Onestar orders his cats to retreat, leaving the other Clans to fend for themselves. This causes the battle to be lost to the rogues, leaving RiverClan severely injured. At the next Gathering, Mistystar and Rowanstar berate him for his leaving and Onestar closes his borders. Meanwhile, in the Kin, Darktail is healing from the battle. Violetpaw is beginning to think that he is okay, but he kills Rain after his attempted assassination.
He then recruits kittypets into Kin for an upcoming battle to take over RiverClan. The Kin are successful in the battle, but Pinenose and Max are dead, along with a number of RiverClan cats. Mistystar and a few of her cats escape to ThunderClan, while Darktail holds the injured cats as prisoners. Back in ThunderClan, Alderheart and Bramblestar tell the other cats about SkyClan. Twigpaw secretly leaves to find SkyClan because Alderheart thinks he saw her kin, but then Purdy dies. Later on, Alderheart and Mothwing decide to try to get her herbs from the RiverClan camp. In doing so, Alderheart notes how Needletail seems scared, especially when he mentions the missing ShadowClan cats. Darktail then interrogates Violetpaw about their missing herbs, and she reluctantly reveals that Needletail allowed it, at which he makes her a prisoner.
Meanwhile, Twigpaw is believed to be dead after it appears she was hit by a monster. ThunderClan comes up with a plan to get RiverClan's territory back by getting some of the prisoners out using Violetpaw. After a few successes, Alderheart comes up with a new plan to keep Darktail and his closest members sleeping by having Violetpaw sneak poppy seeds into their prey. But this fails and Darktail punishes her by trying to drown Needletail, but then attacks him to allow Violetpaw to escape. The prisoners then rise up against the Kin and some former ShadowClan cats help with ThunderClan and drive the Kin back to ShadowClan territory. Twigpaw then comes back with SkyClan, and her father Hawkwing.
Violetpaw is also found alive, and a couple of cats go to WindClan to try and persuade them to help when they find the Kin attacking them. They help drive them out, but then Onestar reveals that Darktail is his son and decides to help drive them out. StarClan tells them to remember their names, and the Clan cats realize that they must remember their Clan's names and skills, and use them to drive out the rogues. In the battle against the rogues, Darktail and Onestar go into the lake during fight, and do not reemerge from under the water's surface. Hawkwing offers his kits a place in SkyClan, though neither are sure whether they want to go.

Darkest Night[]

In ThunderClan, RiverClan is slowly leaving to return to their territory, and SkyClan is given part of ShadowClan's territory to settle in at the Gathering, as ShadowClan is very small with so many missing Clanmates. Both Violetpaw and Twigpaw join them and they are given mentors to teach them the ways of SkyClan. Finpaw ends up having some of his tail cut off after a branch falls it. Willowshine receives a vision of a six-toed cat, though none of the cats in the Clans have six toes on any foot. A SkyClan patrol is led to the gorge with Molewhisker to try and find some of their missing Clanmates. On the way, Hawkwing finds Cherrytail and Cloudmist in Barley's barn, but they are hesitant to come back to SkyClan.
At the gorge, they find Fidgetpaw, Mintfur, Nettlesplash, and their kits, then rescue Frecklewish from Twolegs who captured her, then return to the Clans. On the way back, Cloudmist and Cherrytail decide to return with them. Needletail's spirit leads Violetpaw to Tree, a loner that has six toes on one paw, who joins the patrol. Meanwhile, Dovewing goes missing, and no cat knows where she is. Soon afterwards, a rockslide ravages ThunderClan's camp, due to the recent rain. Snowbush dies from an infection in his broken hind leg. At the Gathering, Rowanstar reveals that Tigerheart has gone missing, and asks to join SkyClan with his remaining Clanmates in exchange for the rest of their territory. Leafstar agrees, and when Hawkwing's patrol returns, she decides to make Violetpaw and Twigpaw warriors. Violetpaw becomes Violetshine, but Twigpaw decides to go back to ThunderClan, at which Violetshine is furious at. Finpaw decides to go with her just to be with her. Tree, the medicine cats, and the former ShadowClan cats go down to the lake, where Tree summons the dead ShadowClan cats to talk to their Clanmates. Rowanstar gives up his leader name, thinking of himself unworthy to be a leader.

River of Fire[]

Leafstar struggles to keep SkyClan and the former members of ShadowClan together, as Rowanclaw does not have the strength to continue being a leader of a disloyal Clan. Twigpaw and Finpaw go to ThunderClan, and after some persuasion, are allowed back into the Clan. Twigpaw struggles in ThunderClan as Sparkpelt is named her mentor and she is forced to do her whole apprenticeship over again. Sleekwhisker and Yarrowleaf try to join SkyClan after learning what happened to ShadowClan but are turned away, much to the dislike of the former ShadowClan cats. Meanwhile, bellyache hits the Clans and the medicine cats get a message that 'the shadows are approaching and must not be dispelled', and is believed to be a message that ShadowClan is coming back. Tree is having trouble finding a place in SkyClan but becomes closer to Violetshine. Sleekwhisker and Yarrowleaf are allowed into SkyClan after being discovered again in SkyClan territory. Twigpaw sneaks off to SkyClan with the help of her sister in the hopes of finding out if one of the former ShadowClan cats are suitable to be a leader for ShadowClan. A storm hits, and two fires start: one in Twolegplace and one in RiverClan territory. ThunderClan shelters two kittypets, Velvet and Fuzzball, and rescues a couple of WindClan cats.
Meanwhile, Leafstar tells SkyClan to bunker down, but the former ShadowClan warriors insist on helping the other Clans. Leafstar is growing more and more irritated with Tawnypelt, who is constantly undermining her authority. At a Gathering, RiverClan is welcomed back and Tree is given the role of mediator and will help work out disagreements. Alderheart grows closer to Velvet, but Briarlight gets sick and dies. In SkyClan, Sleekwhisker takes Tawnypelt and Yarrowleaf's kits hostage with cats from the Kin. They are eventually rescued, but Rowanclaw dies. Velvet and Fuzzball go back to Twolegplace and Twigpaw and Finpaw get their warrior names, Twigbranch and Finleap.
Some former ShadowClan cats come with news that Tigerheart is back, along with the missing ShadowClan cats. Tigerheart is at the Moonpool, dead, but StarClan gives him nine lives and he is named the new leader of ShadowClan. The former ShadowClan cats go back with their new leader, along with Dovewing, who has has his kits and is now living in ShadowClan, much to the dismay of ThunderClan. Alderheart travels to Twolegplace to see Velvet one last time before going to the half-moon meeting, where he gets a message: 'The sky has cleared at last, but the Clans must come together to make the forest grow'.

The Raging Storm[]

With ShadowClan reinstated, Tigerstar aims to reclaim SkyClan territory, as he had given it away to them some moons earlier. This causes a conflict between SkyClan and ShadowClan, as SkyClan needs the territory to survive, and ShadowClan cannot feed themselves with such little territory. A few meetings come and go, all ending in disagreement and no clear solution. Meanwhile, Alderheart stays in ShadowClan to help heal Puddleshine's wounds from Silverthorn and mend ShadowClan cats. Finleap visits SkyClan, worried about his kin but is sent back. ShadowClan and SkyClan attack each other, and Leafstar wonders whether they should stay when the other clans don't want them. A small patrol is formed to retaliate, resulting in the poisoning of Sparrowpelt, using deathberry seeds.
The medicine cats have a half moon meeting where they interpret a vision saying all the Clans must stand together. At a gathering, Leafstar decides that SkyClan will leave to go back to the gorge, but Tree decides to stay at the lake. Alderheart also discovers that Juniperclaw poisoned a SkyClan cat with deathberries. Twigbranch takes a patrol to find SkyClan. SkyClan attempt to travel back to the gorge, but a flood ravages their camp and they are saved by the ThunderClan patrol. Meanwhile at the lake, Alderheart and Bramblestar go to ShadowClan and reveal the deathberry poisoning, which Juniperclaw admits to. Tigerstar declares him to no longer be deputy, and Juniperclaw is disowned by Strikestone and Tigerstar. SkyClan gets back to the lake, but Shadowkit and Violetshine fall into a stream and Juniperclaw saves them, but drowns in the process. The Clans all gather together and decide that SkyClan will stay for good.

Trivia[]

Interesting facts[]

  • This is the first main arc Owen Richardson has illustrated the jacket art for following Wayne McLoughlin's passing in July 2015.[95][96] Most notably, this is the first arc to not include a cat featured in a center circle, a trend that is repeated in Richardson's reprinted covers.
  • The hardcover editions of each book in this arc include posters on the other side of the cover jackets. The posters include a textless version of the book's cover art, and two significant quotes from the book.
  • The working title for A Vision of Shadows was StarClan's Promise.[97]

Author statements[]

  • According to one of the editors, Kate revealed that the cats on the covers are: "Alderpaw and Needlepaw in the background (The Apprentice's Quest), Violetpaw and Twigpaw (Thunder and Shadow), Darktail and Needletail (Shattered Sky), Bramblestar and Hawkwing (Darkest Night), Rowanclaw and Leafstar (River of Fire), and Twigbranch and Violetshine again (The Raging Storm). Needletail on Shattered Sky looks much lighter than on The Apprentice's Quest, but I think that's just the lighting".[blog 14]
