"This year we're ringing the changes with the format. Instead of completing a scene set by me, we are giving you free rein over the whole series, including all the Super Editions and the novellas! Do you have a favourite scene? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to view that scene from a different perspective, from a character who is perhaps on the edge of the action now but will be deeply affected later on? Or a cat that has otherwise been overlooked, but you feel deserves to tell their own story?" |
— Vicky about the contest in An Icy Plunge |
An Icy Plunge is a short-story of Silverstream during Fire and Ice. It was the fourth short-story competition hosted on the Warrior Cats website.[1]
Summary[]
- Silverstream dreams of her own blood staining the river red. After she wakes up from her dream, Silverstream heads out of camp where her adopted mother's spirit, Sunfish, comforts her. She asks if Sunfish knows what the dream means, but Sunfish is unsure, though she knows that not all pain is terrible such as when kits are born. Silverstream protests that she is too young to have a litter, and Sunfish hopes she has many moons before that. On the morning hunting patrol, Silverstream spots four ThunderClan cats on the other side of the frozen river, and the largest cat falls beneath the ice. Knowing she cannot let another cat drown, Silverstream rushes in to save him. The water around her is filled with the tangy scent of blood.
- In one ending, Mosskit struggles to keep up after her mother and siblings in the cold snow, but Mosskit is determined to finish playing the game. After demonstrating their hunting crouches, Mistykit complains that it is too cold, and Bluefur prompts her kits again to resume walking. Mosskit also protests, feeling exhausted. Bluefur leaves her kits briefly to run ahead, though Mosskit wonders if their mother abandoned them. Bluefur returns momentarily to carry her kits one-by-one in holes in the snow. Mosskit feels herself drifting to sleep, whimpering one last time if they can go home. A white she-cat with stars in her fur wakes Mosskit up. Mosskit asks if she is done with the game now, and Snowfur agrees to take her home.
- In another ending, Barley feels guilty for allowing Ravenpaw to leave with Riley and Bella to find SkyClan without him, especially since he knows Ravenpaw is ill. Violet, Barley's sister, arrives, and she is confused to see Barley all alone. Barley insists that the journey is pointless since they are unsure where SkyClan lives. Violet reminds Barley that Ravenpaw is his friend, prompting Barley to realize that his place is by Ravenpaw's side. Barley leaves the next morning to find Ravenpaw and his kin. After evading some dogs and resting for the night, Barley vows to reunite with Ravenpaw.
Contest[]
- Similar with the previous contests, the first 500 words were written by Victoria Holmes, and fans were invited to finish the story in 500 words or less by December 31th, 2024. However, fans were encouraged to write from any moment in the series instead of necessarily completing the prompt provided by Vicky. Vicky encouraged fans to take inspiration from favorite scenes, writing a scene from the perspective of a different character, or pointing the spotlight on a character who has been overlooked. Participants were divided into the under 13 and 13 years plus groups. Winners will be given a $100 voucher for the Official Warrior Cats Store and a signed copy of Into the Wild.[1] On February 27th, 2025, the shortlist for the final entries was announced, with ten entries per category. Voting was open for all users until March 13th, 2025.[2] See the external links for a full preview of the submissions.
- The winners were announced on March 14th. Adeline won for the 13 years and older category, and Anastasia-Gabriela won in the under 13 years category.[3]
