"You don't really think Brokenpaw is a normal apprentice, do you? [...] There's just something...off about that 'paw." |
— Ashheart to Blackfoot about Brokenpaw in Blackfoot's Reckoning, chapter 3 |
Ashheart is a pale gray she-cat[2] with blue eyes.[6]
Ashheart was a ShadowClan warrior under Cedarstar's and Raggedstar's leaderships in the forest territories. Her siblings were Frogpaw and Newtpaw and she was apprenticed to Toadskip as Ashpaw. She later gained her warrior name, Ashheart and grew suspicious of Brokenpaw when he was an apprentice. She became mates with Cinderfur and bore his kits, Turtlekit, Quietkit, and Rubblekit. Her kits later died at a young age, and Ashheart reunited with them in StarClan after her death.
History[]
In the Super Editions[]
Tallstar's Revenge[]
- Ashpaw is a ShadowClan apprentice, and her mentor is Toadskip. At a Gathering, Dawnstripe points out Ashpaw and her siblings to Tallpaw, the latter following the former's gaze towards the other apprentice. She introduces Tallpaw as a WindClan apprentice, and Ashpaw comments that he smells like heather. The WindClan tom's mentor explains that it is better to know his enemy, and he contemplates the concept.
- In a battle with WindClan, Ashpaw attacks Tallpaw, hissing insults at him. She flings him to ground, and plunges her paws onto his belly. Tallpaw flails desperately as she and Frogpaw pin him to the ground, but Mole comes to help. The WindClan apprentice launches a counterattack at Ashpaw, sending her racing from camp.
Yellowfang's Secret[]
- "The kittypets fought better than I'd expected, but it's not like they've had warrior training. Which of our battle moves do you think worked best against them?"
- ―Ashheart about the invasion Yellowfang's Secret, page 225
- Ashpaw attends Raggedkit and Scorchkit's apprentice ceremony. She later becomes a warrior with the name Ashheart. Ashheart joins a Carrionplace raid with her Clanmates, and Stonetooth gives her advice, since it's her first time. After the battle, Yellowpaw is relieved when she sees Poolcloud and Ashheart are alright, and both carrying a rat.
- While Stonetooth organizes patrols, he angles his ears to Ashheart, Deerleap, and Toadskip, who are hurrying to eat their fresh-kill. As they leave camp, Ashheart murmurs that she hopes they do not get too close to Twolegplace as they might meet kittypets. Yellowfang attempts to reassure her, but the she-cat remains unconvinced and wonders what kittypets would do.
- Ashheart flexes her claws, asking Yellowfang what it was like when she had to face a big kittypet tom. Uncertain on how to reply, Yellowfang mumbles her answer, but Ashheart continues speaking until Deerleap instructs her to hunt in the bracken rather than chat. Ashheart wonders who Brokenkit's mother may be, believing that Foxheart may have given Brokenkit up since she was ambitious for the deputy position.
In the Novellas[]
Blackfoot's Reckoning[]
- Blackfoot: "You're being silly. He's a bit of a loner, but there's nothing wrong with that. And the other 'paws look up to him since he's the biggest and the best fighter."
- Ashheart: "That's one of the things that worries me. The last thing ShadowClan needs is for other cats to start following Brokenpaw's lead."
- Blackfoot's Reckoning, chapter 3
- Ashheart angrily scolds Brokenpaw for injuring Deerpaw during a training session. She raises a paw to strike him when Blackfoot intervenes. He warns Brokenpaw that the rules are meant to protect everyone, but he merely scoffs and provokes Ashheart by implying she is a coward for being afraid of getting hurt. Blackfoot stops Ashheart from lunging at him, but she insists she was merely going to scare him. Blackfoot warns her about potentially hurting Raggedpelt's son. Ashheart insits Brokenpaw is not a normal apprentice, fearing the others will start listening to him, before going to find Nightpelt.
