"I'd like to be called Badgerfang. Like you, because you were such a great mentor."
— Badgerpaw to Flintfang in Code of the Clans, page 56

Badgerfang is a very tiny, fluffy black-and-white tom.[2] His face is striped like a badger's.[4]

Badgerfang was a ShadowClan apprentice under Brokenstar’s leadership in the forest territories. He was born as Badgerkit to Fernshade and Wolfstep, and was forced to become an apprentice early as Badgerpaw. He participated in a battle against WindClan, but was mortally wounded by a WindClan warrior. Before he died, he named himself Badgerfang after his mentor, Flintfang. His death made Flintfang refuse to ever train a cat who was under six moons, as well as sparking controversy against Brokenstar and his tyrannical rule. In StarClan, Badgerfang gave Tigerstar and Blackstar one of their nine lives.

History[]

In the Super Editions[]

Moth Flight's Vision[]

Although unnamed, Moth Flight sees Badgerfang giving Tigerclaw one of his nine lives.

Yellowfang's Secret[]

"You will go to StarClan, Badgerpaw. You will shine so brightly, I promise you."
―Yellowfang to Badgerpaw's dead body Yellowfang's Secret, page 474
Badgerkit is born to Fernshade and Wolfstep during Brokenstar's leadership. Yellowfang comments on how his face is striped like a badger's, and his mother calls him Badgerkit. Wolfstep told his mate she chose a good name for their kit. Later, Runningnose commented to Yellowfang on how well Badgerkit and Fernshade were doing.
Badgerpaw is announced as an apprentice with Flintfang as his mentor at a Gathering by Brokenstar. The medicine cats of the other Clans state that he is far too young to become an apprentice, but Yellowfang sharply tells them that Brokenstar knows what he's doing. When the Gathering is over, Badgerpaw walks beside Brokenstar, his eyes full of excitement, and Brokenstar tells him that he will fight in his first battle soon. Brokenstar claims that he's seen traces of WindClan on their territory, and they're going to attack at dawn, so Badgerpaw hops over to Flintfang to tell him about the battle and how he'll use the new move his mentor taught him. Flintfang tells him to remember everything he taught him, and that there is no shame in losing a battle. Yellowfang notes that his voice is heavy, and wonders if he actually wants to bring Badgerpaw into a battle. After that, Fernshade says how she's proud of him and never thought she'd have given birth to him. Yellowfang wants to say that he shouldn't even be an apprentice yet, but keeps it to herself.
After the battle, Flintfang comes into camp with a dead Badgerpaw in his jaws. Flintfang is sad for his apprentice, and claims he'll never train a kit ever again. Meanwhile, Yellowfang murmurs to Badgerpaw that he will go to StarClan and promises he'll shine very brightly, though Flintfang corrects her and says he's not Badgerpaw anymore, but Badgerfang. Yellowfang says it's a great name, and believes that the making of young kits into apprentices must stop. Flintfang then agrees to tell Fernshade what happened and assure her that he died as a warrior.
Yellowfang confronts Brokenstar telling him Badgerfang is dead. Brokenstar doesn't seem to care and says it's a shame because he would've made a great warrior. Yellowfang snaps back that he would have but he was too young, and the apprenticing of kits had to stop, but Brokenstar dismisses it, saying that she wasn't leader. Littlepaw asks Yellowfang if Badgerfang is really dead when he sees her after the fight, and Yellowfang confirms it. Littlepaw exclaims that he's a true warrior now, and he hopes Badgerfang is watching him from StarClan.

In the Novellas[]

Blackfoot's Reckoning[]

Blackfoot: "Brokenstar says that our warriors will be stronger if they begin their training earlier. You should be proud. Badgerpaw isn't scared. He's thrilled to start training."
Fernshade: "Of course he's thrilled. He's a kit. All he can imagine is being the greatest warrior ever born and taking down the other Clans with just one way. He's not old enough to realize he should be afraid."
—Blackfoot and Fernshade arguing about Badgerpaw's apprenticeship Blackfoot's Reckoning, chapter 4
Badgerkit is a young ShadowClan kit, and his parents are Fernshade and Wolfstep. As Brokenstar calls Badgerkit forward, Blackfoot's heart aches for his nephew as he begins his training, and Blackfoot looks over to see both Fernshade and Wolfstep looking very uncomfortable at the idea of Badgerkit starting training so early. Badgerkit squeaks in delight and runs towards the Clanrock, but stops himself as if he had suddenly become self-conscious. Brokenstar mews that it is time for Badgerkit to become an apprentice, and assigns Flintfang to the newly apprenticed Badgerpaw. Blackfoot knows that he can trust Flintfang to look after Fernshade's kit, although Fernshade does not react well to the news and confronts both of her siblings over it. Fernshade is scared for Badgerkit and does not think he is ready, but both Blackfoot's and Flintfang's paws are tied and there is nothing either cat can do.
During the battle with WindClan, Blackfoot looks around for Flintfang and Badgerpaw, who was so excited to use the new moves he had learned from Flintfang. Blackfoot soon spots Flintfang's gray pelt, but his stomach drops when he notices that Flintfang standing over a small black-and-white body. Blackfoot notices that Badgerpaw's body is stained with blood, and as the white tom approaches Flintfang, he overhears Badgerpaw saying that he wants to be called Badgerfang, honoring Flintfang's mentoring. Flintfang rests his muzzle on Badgerpaw's head, and says that Badgerfang is a good name for a warrior. Blackfoot yowls to StarClan, but knew that he was too late and that Badgerpaw had died and gone to StarClan. The white tom admits that Fernshade was right, and that Badgerpaw was not ready to become an apprentice.
Blackfoot wonders if he should have spoken up about Brokenstar training young apprentices, because Badgerpaw had not been the first kit to have died due to the antics of the cruel ShadowClan leader. He is greeted by the very tom he failed to protect, as Badgerfang is one of the cats to present Blackfoot with a life. Badgerfang greets Blackfoot happily, and Blackfoot's chest tightens as he remembers that Badgerfang was Fernshade's only kit. Blackfoot asks what he should have done, and Badgerfang says that Blackfoot is welcome to stop at any time and that he does not need to give Blackfoot a life. The tom mews that he does not want to stop, and asks Badgerfang to give him the life that he intends.
Badgerfang gives Blackfoot a life for perspective, encouraging Blackfoot to seek multiple points of view and know that a Clan leader must also think for himself at the end of the day. Badgerfang brushes his tail across Blackfoot's side as the young cat departs, although Blackfoot wants to beg him to stay. The white tom wonders if he could have prevented his nephew's death by standing up to Brokenstar, and questions if he could have saved Badgerfang.

In the Stand-Alone Graphic Novels[]

Exile from ShadowClan[]

While Nightpelt and Yellowfang are watching ShadowClan fight WindClan, Yellowfang remarks how Brokenstar has taken Badgerpaw, who is only three moons old, into the battle.

In the Field Guides[]

Code of the Clans[]

"A kit must be at least six moons old to become an apprentice."
―The fifth law of the warrior code Code of the Clans, page 48
Badgerpaw is an underage apprentice of ShadowClan, only three moons old; he was made an apprentice early because Brokenstar was forcing kits to begin training much earlier than they were supposed to. During the battle in which ShadowClan drives WindClan out of its territory, Badgerpaw is attacked by an enemy warrior, who wounds him fatally. He drops to the ground without making a sound. Blood trickles from his ear. His mentor, Flintfang, shakes off the warrior, than carries Badgerpaw to the edge of camp, and lays him down. Badgerpaw is mentioned to smell strange; sour, like blood and crow-food while his breathing is quick and shallow. Flintfang is said to have had trained him every battle move he had known. Flintfang is about to go attack the warrior that had hurt Badgerpaw, but the young apprentice wakes up. Badgerpaw tells Flintfang that he wanted Brokenstar and his mother, Fernshade, to be proud of him, and asks Flintfang if he had done well enough. Flintfang tells him that ShadowClan would always remember him and how brave he was. Badgerpaw then asks if StarClan would make him a warrior, and what his name would be. When Flintfang says that he thought StarClan would let him pick his own name, Badgerpaw says that he wanted to be called Badgerfang after Flintfang, because he had been such a great mentor. Finally, Badgerpaw lets out a soft sigh, and dies. Flintfang vows never to train an underage apprentice again, promising to follow the rule in the warrior code that doesn't allow kits under the age of six moons to train as an apprentice.

The Ultimate Guide[]

Badgerfang approaches Tigerclaw to give him one of his nine lives and Tigerclaw sneers, saying he's the smallest warrior he has ever seen. This angers Badgerfang, and he informs him that he died as Badgerpaw when he was four moons old after Brokenstar forced him and his littermates to fight in battles before they should have even become apprentices. Because of that, his mentor, Flintfang, said he could choose his warrior name.
Badgerfang then gives Tigerclaw a life for training his young cats wisely, to train them when they are strong enough to survive their first battle. After giving Tigerclaw this life, Badgerfang walks away back to his StarClan Clanmates, allowing his Clanmates to give Tigerclaw the lives he needs to become leader.

Yellowfang: "Badgerfang is dead. Or did you know that already?"
Brokenstar: "That is a shame. He would have made a great warrior."
Yellowfang: "Maybe one day, but he was too young! You must stop training kits before they are six moons old. You will destroy our Clan before they can become warriors!"
Brokenstar: "That is my decision, not yours."
Yellowfang: "Then I will walk with StarClan in my dreams. I will let them know exactly what you’re doing, and they will take away your nine lives."
Brokenstar: "StarClan will do nothing to stop me, old cat. I have made their Clan glorious! Let them try! You certainly won't stop me. Now, do your duty and heal my warriors before we celebrate."

Badgerfang: "I am Badgerfang!"
Tigerclaw: "Are you sure? You’re the smallest warrior I've ever seen!"
Badgerfang: "I died as Badgerpaw when I was four moons old. Brokenstar forced me and my littermates to fight in battles before we should even have become apprentices. But I fought bravely and gave my life to save my Clan. Because of that, my mentor, Flintfang, said I could choose my warrior name."
Tigerclaw: "Fine. So what life can you give me?"
Badgerfang: "Be patient. Your lives will come as we wish to give them, not as you wish to receive them. I give you a life for training your young cats wisely. Train them when they are strong enough to survive their first battle, and encourage them to listen to many cats, including elders, to learn the most from their Clanmates' histories."
