"The first thing I remember is playing with my littermates on a patch of waste ground. Our mother taught us to hunt and find food among Twoleg rubbish. Later on she showed us how to defend ourselves."
Barley to Firestar about his mother in The Darkest Hour, page 247

Barley's mother is a black she-cat with a white spot on her chest, white above her eyes, a scar over her muzzle, a scar on her right shoulder, and yellow eyes.[2]

In The Darkest Hour, Barley mentions his mother to Firestar as he explains his history with the Twolegplace rogues known as BloodClan. He states that she taught them how to hunt for their own food, and to find it in Twoleg rubbish, as well as self-defense skills. At some point, Barley and his littermates left their mother's den upon Scourge's decree that cats should fend for themselves, though Barley secretly stayed with his sister Violet.

Continuity[]

The following information is from sources considered non-canon, retconned, or from adapted material.

  • In Secrets of the Clans, a 2007 field guide, Barley describes how his mother taught him and his littermates to hunt and fight. He describes her as harsh by necessity so her kits would survive. His mother was forced to abandon them when they were twelve moons old upon Scourge's law that all cats must be able to defend themselves.[8]
