"If I'm bloodying my paws already, why stop at one cat?"
This article contains major spoilers for the recently released book, Wind. Please proceed at your own discretion.
"Do you think Bramblestar was always so impulsive? We were still kits before the impostor, so we've never seen him being a proper leader. Every cat says he was great. Do you think he was? Because he doesn't exactly seem great now."
— Bayshine to Nightheart about Bramblestar in Sky, page 272

Bayshine is a golden tabby tom[1] with white splotches.[6]

Bayshine is a ThunderClan warrior who has served under Bramblestar's and Squirrelstar's leaderships in the lake territories. He was born to Sorrelstripe and Dewnose as Baykit along with his sister, Myrtlekit. He grew up alongside Flamekit and Finchkit, the former becoming his best friend. He was apprenticed to Mousewhisker as Baypaw during the impostor's reign. As a warrior, Bayshine befriended Sunbeam when she left ShadowClan to be with Nightheart in ThunderClan. He participated in her second trial to join the Clan, and later became a mentor to Bristlepaw.

History[]

In The Broken Code[]

Lost Stars[]

Baykit, along with his sister Myrtlekit, tumble around with Flamekit and Finchkit while their mothers listen to the Clan meeting. Later, he and Myrtlekit play with Sparkpelt's kits while being monitored by Sorrelstripe. When Bramblestar's body is brought to camp, he sadly stares at it.

The Silent Thaw[]

"The new apprentices are called Myrtlepaw and Baypaw. Aren't ThunderClan names strange?"
―Needlepaw to Rootpaw about Baypaw and Myrtlepaw The Silent Thaw, page 43
Baypaw is now an apprentice with Mousewhisker as his mentor. Baypaw asks Mousewhisker when they are going to train while waiting for Squirrelflight to send them on patrol. However, Squirrelflight fails to appear, so they decide to go without being ordered and Lilyheart, Cinderheart, and their apprentices join them. Later, Needlepaw introduces Rootpaw to him and Myrtlepaw at the Gathering and remarks that ThunderClan cats have strange names. Baypaw and his sister later listen to Graystripe, who is telling them a story.

Darkness Within[]

Alderheart suggests that if Bristlefrost is bored, she can help Flamepaw and Baypaw clean out bedding. Baypaw insists that they do not need help as he drags old bedding from the elders' den, and says that Cloudtail and Brightheart are giving them advice. The elders remind him to take the bedding straight out of camp and to fetch ferns rather than bracken, which is uncomfortable for Brightheart to sleep on. Baypaw rolls his eyes as he drags the bedding away.

The Place of No Stars[]

When Graystripe returns from his wander, he orders the apprentices to take the remaining prey off the fresh-kill pile to the elders.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

"You might not want to say that too loud, especially considering that our leader, Bramblestar, is your kin."
―Baypaw warning Flamepaw to be mindful of his words River (book), page 8
Baypaw and his foster brother Flamepaw share prey before their warrior assessments. They listen in on the senior warriors discussing changes to the warrior code, and is shocked when Flamepaw suggests they should change leaders regularly. Baypaw warns him to be mindful of his words because of his kin. Sparkpelt and Sorrelstripe wish the apprentices good luck, and Baypaw wishes Flamepaw one final good luck before they begin their assessments. Baypaw passes his assessment and is named Bayshine, though Flamepaw does not.

Sky[]

"What in StarClan is wrong with you? We're ThunderClan cats, and we're lucky that we are. For StarClan's sake! ThunderClan is the best Clan! And you're a descendant of Firestar. Are you seriously thinking about becoming a ShadowClan cat?"
―Bayshine to Nightheart when he offhandedly mentions about joining ShadowClan Sky (book), page 185
While cleaning the dens, Nightheart offhandedly remarks that he does not feel like he belongs in ThunderClan and might be happier in ShadowClan, like how his kin Tawnypelt did. Bayshine believes this to be a ludicrous idea and scolds Nightheart for believing such. The black tom is disheartened by his friend's sharp words. When Bramblestar asks Nightheart to sneak into ShadowClan to learn what Tigerstar is planning to do with RiverClan, Nightheart asks if Bayshine can accompany him on the secret mission. The next morning, Nightheart is eager for the mission later that night, though Bayshine is less than optimistic. He questions why Bramblestar is allowing them to trespass on another Clan's territory and wonders about Bramblestar's behavior compared to before the impostor. The golden tabby comments on how Squirrelflight is the one who is taking care of the leadership tasks instead of Bramblestar, though Nightheart silences Bayshine's concerns.
By sunset, Bayshine alerts Squirrelflight of their secret mission tasked by Bramblestar. While Squirrelflight and Bramblestar argue about the mission, Squirrelflight decides to cancel it, thanking Bayshine for informing her. Bayshine apologizes to Nightheart, though the black tom is frustrated that his chance to prove himself has been foiled. Bayshine asks if he is still planning on going on the mission alone, but he insists he has no where else to go. Seeming satisfied with his answer, Bayshine leaves to share prey with Myrtlebloom and Finchlight. Nightheart feels betrayed by Bayshine, and he relates to Sunbeam's feelings of betrayal over Blazefire and Lightleap. When Nightheart decides to leave ThunderClan to be with Sunbeam in ShadowClan, he decides he would tell Bayshine first. However, Nightheart abruptly informs the entire Clan when challenged, and he catches Bayshine's crestfallen expression from the warrior's den.

Shadow[]

Bayshine: "I knew you would figure it out sooner or later. You're ThunderClan, the greatest Clan there is!"
Nightheart: "I am, Bayshine. You were right all along."
—Bayshine and Nightheart Shadow (book), page 264
When Nightheart shows up at the Gathering with ShadowClan, Bayshine and Lilyheart ask where he has been and why he is with ShadowClan. When Nightheart returns to ThunderClan to apologize, Bayshine greets him happily and asks why he came. Later, after Nightheart talks to Bramblestar, Bayshine asks why he did. On his way to rejoin ThunderClan, Nightheart thinks that at least he is still friends with Bayshine. When he arrives, Bayshine is glad that Nightheart has figured out where he belongs, and he tells Bramblestar that Nightheart has returned. Nightheart later sees him sharing prey with Finchlight and listening to the discussion about Bramblestar giving up his leadership.

Thunder[]

"Don't be difficult, Cherryfall. Sunbeam's leading this patrol, remember? It's her trial, not yours."
―Bayshine to Cherryfall Thunder (book), pages 207-208
Bayshine rests with Nightheart, Sunbeam, and Myrtlebloom. He teases Myrtlebloom about her snoring, then tells Sunbeam that he hopes the warriors' den has enough space for her. He cleans his face and tells Sunbeam a story about Nightheart bringing home a live vole. When Nightheart goes to the Moonpool, Bayshine promises to look after Sunbeam for Nightheart. After returning from patrol, he heads toward the warriors' den with Myrtlebloom and Sunbeam sits with them, where Bayshine comments on the confusion she must be experiencing. Nightheart returns from the Moonpool a bit later, and Bayshine asks what StarClan had said. When Squirrelstar announces her new leadership, he cheers for her. Sunbeam asks where Nightheart is and Bayshine inquires if he is hunting. Later, Finchlight and Sparkpelt are talking about the rabbit Finchlight caught, and Bayshine remarks that he would never enter a rabbit burrow. Sunbeam reflects that she has grown accustomed to being without her mate and that Bayshine and Myrtlebloom always let her go with their patrols.
Bayshine is chosen to help with Sunbeam's second trial and he is eager to do so. When they reach the rock, he observes how large it is and notes that it is not easily moveable. He suggests that they roll the rock onto something to move it, and Sunbeam has the idea to use bark. Cherryfall finds birch bark, but Bayshine says that it is too thin. He says that Alderheart's piece is musty. He finds a piece of elm bark, but Cherryfall dismisses it. When she and Sunbeam argue over Cherryfall's idea to push the rock into camp, Bayshine tells Cherryfall that it is Sunbeam's trial. She backs down and he says to continue searching. Bayshine finally finds a strong piece of sycamore bark to use. When Cherryfall hesitates to help push the rock, he encourages her. They pull the rock away from the edge of the camp successfully. Ivypool congratulates them, and he credits Sunbeam with thinking of the bark. Ivypool gives him permission to finish his squirrel and he heads off behind Alderheart, pausing to invite Sunbeam.
With Alderheart, Bayshine waits to accompany Squirrelstar to the meeting with Tree. Sunbeam walks with him. When they get there, Sunbeam sees Berryheart, and Squirrelstar offers for her to go home, saying that Bayshine can escort the patrol home. Sunbeam refuses and speaks with Bayshine, who warns her that her mother is approaching them. He tells her that she does not have to speak with Berryheart, but she decides to do so. After her conversation with Berryheart, Sunbeam returns to Bayshine and he asks how it went. He calls Violetshine over to tell Sunbeam a story about Macgyver. As the cats head back home, he speaks with Squirrelstar about the meeting, and she reports that progress is being made. He asks Sunbeam if she wishes to hunt but she says no, so he goes off on his own. At the Gathering, he talks to Myrtlebloom, Violetshine, and Brindlewing. He mentions that RiverClan remains without a leader or a medicine cat who can speak with StarClan. When Berryheart calls Sunbeam out for switching Clans, Bayshine retorts that she is a Clanmate, and tells Sunbeam to retaliate. He cheers Sunbeam's name after her speech to Berryheart.

Wind[]

Sunbeam: "Bayshine, this is really kind of you. I'm sure I'd never have made it out of camp on my own."
Bayshine: "No problem. I'll get on with hunting now, so we'll have some prey to take back."
Sunbeam: "I'll be off, then. Thanks Bayshine."
Bayshine: "May StarClan light your path."
—Bayshine helping Sunbeam Wind (book), page 132
Bayshine excitedly welcomes back Nightheart. He says he knew Nightheart would be ok and wants to fill him in on recent events. When Bayshine is playing with Spotfur's kits, Stemkit, Graykit, and Bristlekit, Sunbeam asks for his help to smuggle herbs to her kin. Bayshine obliges happily and tells Ivypool they are going hunting. He instructs Sunbeam to hide the herbs from Twigbranch who is on guard. Bayshine walks Sunbeam to the edge of the territory, where they separate. He goes hunting to make the story he told Ivypool more believable. When Sunbeam is missing that night, he lies, saying she came back late and went out again early, while everyone was asleep. Squirrelstar scolds Bayshine for lying about Sunbeam's whereabouts.
At Bristlepaw's apprentice ceremony, Bayshine is named her mentor. He takes her out on a tour of the territory, along with Wafflepaw, Nightheart, Finchlight, and Graypaw. When they find fox scent, Bayshine playfully scares Graypaw and Bristlepaw with his warning about foxes. Even though the scent is stale, Bayshine says they should still report it. He later asks the apprentices what they should have done if the scent was fresh. He also tells them how two-legs made their camp and the old Thunderpath long ago. Bristlepaw and Graypaw begin squabbling about who will be the better warrior and do not pay attention to what is going on around them. Bayshine exasperatedly expresses he is not sure where to begin with them. Nightheart has an idea and the three mentors jump out from the bushes and scare the two younger apprentices. Bristlepaw tries to run away and gets stuck in bramble tendrils so Bayshine helps her out. Bayshine is very happy with how the session went and points out how Graypaw and Bristlepaw are paying attention to their surroundings now.
While heading back to camp to find shelter from the storm, Finleap and Bayshine find Frostpaw and escort her to ThunderClan's camp. When Tigerstar and Frostpaw show up in ThunderClan's camp, Bayshine moves closer out of curiosity. Nightheart requests the other mentors take Wafflepaw with them as they go out with their own apprentices. Bayshine agrees with a quip.
