Beyond the Fence is a short-story of Sandpaw, Dustpaw, and Firepaw during Into the Wild. It was the third short-story competition hosted on the Warrior Cats website.[1]
Summary[]
- In leaf-bare, Bluestar asks Whitestorm to lead a hunting patrol with Sandpaw, Darkstripe, Dustpaw, and Firepaw. Whitestorm tells Firepaw to take the lead as they head towards the Twolegplace, though Sandpaw and Dustpaw snicker if that is because he used to be a kittypet. Whitestorm injures his shoulder while catching a squirrel, leaving the three apprentices to resume the patrol on their own. Dustpaw detects rabbit scent from the other side of the fence, but Firepaw insists they should resume hunting in the forest. Sandpaw questions Firepaw's motives.
- In one ending, Sandpaw climbs a nearby tree and notices a plump black rabbit in the Twoleg garden. However, a tiny white-and-black kit ambushes her to protect the rabbit named Blackberry. Firepaw pretends that they are defeated and calls a retreat. Sandpaw admires Firepaw's bravery and thinks he is not so bad after all.
- In another ending, Firepaw explains that venturing into Twoleg territory is dangerous, but Sandpaw and Dustpaw lead the way over the fence regardless. However, a large dog ambushes them, but Firepaw bravely attacks the dog. After they scramble away to safety, Sandpaw admits that Firepaw was right and perhaps he is not a mouse-brain after all.
Contest[]
- Similar with the previous contests, the first 500 words were written by Victoria Holmes, and fans were invited to finish the story in 500 words or less by December 31th, 2023. Participants were divided into the under 13 and 13 years plus groups. Winners will be given a $100 voucher for the Official Warrior Cats Store, a signed copy of Into the Wild, and a chance to name a character in Changing Skies.[2] On February 26th, 2024, the shortlist for the final entries was announced, with five entries per category. Voting was open for all users until March 26th, 2024.[3] See the external links for a full preview of the submissions.
- The winners were announced on April 2nd: Shonagh for the 13 years and older category and Grace in the under 13 years category.[4] They named the characters Rufus and Shyfrost.[5]
