"What did we really gain by moving to the lake? What kind of leader have I been?"
This article contains major spoilers for the recently released book, The Elders' Quest. Please proceed at your own discretion.
"I have something. The SkyClan scent on the border isn't because of prey-stealing. It's because of me. I've fallen in love with a SkyClan cat, and we've been meeting secretly. It's her scent that the patrols have picked up. […] I've been scared to speak to you. But after I talked to Tawnypelt, I realized that she's right. There's nothing wrong with the choice I'm making. I'm going to become a SkyClan warrior so that I can be with Ridgeglow."
— Birchfeather to Tigerstar and Dovewing in The Elders' Quest, page 51

Birchfeather is a light brown tom.[3]

Birchfeather is a SkyClan warrior under Leafstar's leadership in the lake territories, previously a warrior of ShadowClan under Tigerstar's leadership. He was born to Tigerstar and Dovewing as Birchkit alongside his littermate, Rowankit. He mourned for his brother when he died from greencough. He soon earned his apprentice name, Birchpaw, with Slatefur as his mentor, before eventually earning his warrior name, Birchfeather. Upon falling in love with a SkyClan warrior, Ridgeglow, Birchfeather joined SkyClan to become her mate, damaging his relationship with his parents.

History[]

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

«Flamepaw glanced over at Birchfall, whose eyes shone with pride. Every cat assumed that Birchkit had been named in honor of the senior warrior.»
Flamepaw on Birchkit's name River, page 47
Birchkit is born to Tigerstar and Dovewing alongside his brother, Rowankit. Sunbeam aspires to mentor one of them, and Tigerstar announces his kits at the Gathering. Later, Berryheart wonders if Tigerstar is willing to welcome Fringewhisker into the Clan because his kits are so young.

Sky[]

"While [Birchkit] was eager to play, eager to explore the camp, Rowankit was always content to be snuggled up to my belly."
―Dovewing about Birchkit during Rowankit's vigil Sky, page 164
Birchkit and Rowankit develop sniffles, though Rowankit's develops into greencough. Birchkit stays in the nursery with Cinnamontail while his parents bring Rowankit to the medicine cats' den. Following Rowankit's death, Birchkit attends his brother's vigil and mews that he will miss him. Hopwhisker guides Birchkit, Firkit, and Whisperkit back to the nursery while the Clan grieves for Rowankit. Later, Birchkit, Firkit, and Whisperkit play while Tigerstar and Berryheart argue in the camp.

Wind[]

He is now an apprentice named Birchpaw with Slatefur as his mentor.

Star[]

When Tigerstar leaves to investigate if Splashtail has truly been driven out, Nightheart thinks that he had asked him and Sunbeam to stay as he is wary of leaving the Clan vulnerable since his kit is in camp.

In the Changing Skies arc[]

The Elders' Quest[]

"Will you come with me, Tawnypelt? I really need your support while I talk to my parents. I'm their last-born, and the only survivor of my litter, and they still treat me like a kit, even though I'm a full-grown warrior!"
―Birchfeather asking for Tawnypelt's support The Elders' Quest, page 51
Birchpaw is now a warrior named Birchfeather.
Tigerstar orders Tawnypelt to lead a patrol to check the SkyClan border for signs of trespassing, and she decides to take Birchfeather with her. Near the SkyClan border, Tawnypelt picks up SkyClan scent, realizing that it is a single cat, and asks Birchfeather about the junior warriors of other Clans. Reluctantly, Birchfeather reveals that he is in love with Ridgeglow and had been meeting up with her there. He tells Tawnypelt that the reason he had not told anyone about his relationship is that he was scared of what his parents would say. Tawnypelt assures him that Tigerstar and Dovewing would understand, as they once had a forbidden relationship, believing that he intends for Ridgeglow to join ShadowClan. Birchfeather decides to tell his parents when they return home, and when they reach camp, Tawnypelt agrees to accompany him for support. However, once Birchfeather tells his parents about his relationship, revealing his intention to join SkyClan, they are upset and blame Tawnypelt.
When Birchfeather says his goodbyes to ShadowClan, he is distressed that his parents have not spoken to him. Tawnypelt confronts Tigerstar and Dovewing, who are upset that Birchfeather is leaving after they already lost his brother, Rowankit. Tigerstar accuses her of wanting Birchfeather to go, but she points out their own forbidden relationship. Hesitantly, they leave their den to say a formal goodbye to their son, which upsets him further. Tawnypelt accompanies Birchfeather on his way to SkyClan, and he expresses his desire for his parents' support. She assures him that their approval is not necessary for him to pursue his own happiness. The two agree to meet outside of Gatherings, making Tawnypelt happy, and at the border, they say their goodbyes.
Following Kitescratch's death, Leafstar's competency as a leader comes into question, and Kitescratch's mother, Reedclaw, leads a vote to depose her. Ridgeglow attempts to encourage Birchfeather to vote against Leafstar, but Hawkwing tells Birchfeather to abstain since he is not yet a true member of SkyClan, to Birchfeather's relief. Soon after, Tawnypelt decides to visit Birchfeather, though Tigerstar refuses to send a message to his son. When he arrives, Tawnypelt notices that he seems upset. He admits that SkyClan attempted to depose Leafstar after she attacked one of her own cats, though Birchfeather is annoyed that he has not been given his trials. Tawnypelt extends an offer for him to rejoin ShadowClan but he insists that he wants to be with Ridgeglow. They briefly discuss kits, and Birchfeather questions if his family misses him.
While hunting, Tawnypelt wonders about Birchfeather. She catches a squirrel that runs from SkyClan territory, only to be confronted by Ridgeglow, who attacks her. Birchfeather stops them and explains that he and Ridgeglow are completing one of his tasks: catching prey for their hungry Clan. Tawnypelt keeps the squirrel, but after the dejected SkyClan cats leave, she chases a rabbit into SkyClan territory and hears a joyful Birchfeather make the catch. She soon realizes that Yarrowleaf has seen her. Tigerstar accuses Tawnypelt of putting Birchfeather above ShadowClan and says that she has hurt the chance of Birchfeather coming home, and he punishes her with night guard duty.
During SkyClan's second vote against Leafstar, Birchfeather again stands aside, still having not yet completed his trials. Later, when Tawnypelt decides to investigate the new Twoleg den because of her dream, she encounters Birchfeather completing another trial on dawn patrol. He decides to accompany her to the Twoleg den to find the cat in distress from Tawnypelt's dream, and when they arrive, he slips under the wall with her. When they cannot initially hear the cat, they split up to search, only for Tawnypelt to fall with a collapsing pile of shiny logs. She calls to Birchfeather, who responds, but she falls into a hole and loses consciousness. Birchfeather gets help from SkyClan to save her.

Ivypool's Heart[]

"But I had a wonderful time here, helping Stalk Purr with the newborn kits. It reminded me of taking care of Birchkit and Rowankit when they were first born."
―Dovewing to Ivypool about caring for the wildcat kits Ivypool's Heart, page 362
When persuading Tigerstar to let her go on the journey, Dovewing mentions that she can leave Birchkit since he has been weaned. Later, she tells Ivypool that giving birth to Birchkit and Rowankit had been better than giving birth in a Twolegplace, and she had been delighted to meet her second litter. Just before the ceremony to assign Stalk Purr's newborn kits their guides, Dovewing notes to Ivypool that helping Stalk Purr and her kits had reminded her of her own kits.

Birchfeather: "Do you really think they're not going to come say goodbye?"
Tawnypelt: "Of course they will."
—Birchfeather and Tawnypelt about Tigerstar and Dovewing The Elders' Quest, pages 112-113

Birchfeather: "I was starting to have second thoughts, until my parents came out to speak to me. They didn't sound all that warm, but at least now I know that they don't hate me."
Tawnypelt: "I'm glad they came to speak to you. And you need to realize that they're behaving this way because they love you so much. They can't bear to see you leave."
Birchfeather: "I just wish they supported me."
Tawnypelt: "Maybe that's asking too much. But you don't ever need your parents' approval for your happiness. You must follow your heart, Birchfeather, no matter what any of your kin say."
—Tawnypelt reassuring Birchfeather The Elders' Quest, page 116

"But I can't just leave! I could never do that to Ridgeglow. Our love is so true, it overwhelms me sometimes! Have you ever felt love like that, Tawnypelt?"
