Chapter description[]
- The cry that Scourge was dead is picked up by some cats, and Blackfoot continues to fight his BloodClan opponent. She hears it, and shocked, they both turn to see Scourge, lifeless. BloodClan flees, and the Clans chase them out. Blackfoot tells himself that ShadowClan will survive, and snarls at Darkstripe's corpse.
- Runningnose and Littlecloud are treating the injured warriors, but the worst injuries seem to be only a gash on Tallpoppy's side, and a long scratch across Oakfur's chest. Blackfoot checks that they are all okay, and Rowanclaw states they are lucky, Russetfur saying that they fought well. Tawnypaw and Bramblepaw are huddled close, talking to each other, but Blackfoot decides to let them be for now. Thinking that he is now leader, he feels doubtful if he will be enough.
- He spots Leopardstar and the rest of the RiverClan cats leaving, the dappled tabby ignoring ShadowClan. Blackfoot gets irritated by Leopardstar's actions, knowing that she didn't want to show any connection to ShadowClan because Tigerstar was dead. Russetfur and Blackfoot agree that she is a traitor and a fox-heart. Firestar makes his way toward them. Blackfoot greets him, and Firestar asks him what he is going to do now. He replies that he would lead ShadowClan, Firestar says that then he will see Blackfoot at the next Gathering, adding that he would do well to learn from his mistakes. Blackfoot tells ShadowClan to get up, as they will be going back home now, ashamed.
- The next morning, he wakes up a little late and is greeted by Runningnose. Blackfoot wonders on whether StarClan will judge him for the bad decisions he had made. Blackfoot tells Runningnose that he is ready, and they start padding toward the camp entrance. Russetfur wishes them good luck, and Blackfoot tells her that she will be the next deputy. They finally arrive at Highstones, and he pads after Runningnose in the cold air. The medicine cat announces that they are here, and suddenly, light floods the cave and he sees the Moonstone. Runningnose tells him what to do, and he complies, touching his nose to the Moonstone.
- He jerks in pain, feeling only the pain. He opens his eyes to StarClan's hunting grounds. He realizes that StarClan cats are gathered around him. Sagewhisker stands in front of Blackfoot, and states he was uncertain. Blackstar replies that he is, but he is loyal, and hisses cause him to flinch. Sagewhisker tells him that ShadowClan will be destroyed if the next leader is not honorable, and then all the Clans in the forest would fall, asking Blackfoot if he is up to the task. Sagewhisker informs him that the next cats would give you a gift, and that those gifts may have memories. He could tell them to stop, and another cat will become leader. Blackfoot understands.
- Hollyflower steps up, telling him that she needs to tell him something. Blackfoot tells his mother that he already knows, warmly greeting her. He greets Blizzardwing, his biological father, and he instantly feels the cats recede as the memories of his kithood surrounded him.
