Chapter description[]

In his memory, Blackpaw squeezes his eyes shut in pain as his stomach gives pangs of pain. He and his littermate, Fernpaw had found a dead frog new the edge of the camp and they'd been so hungry. It smelled fine, and they'd assumed that hasn't been dead for long, but it'd turned out to be a little mistake. Perhaps he could get out of the medicine cat den soon with the permission of Sagewhisker, so he could say something to Fernpaw. Hollyflower had stayed close when he'd been sick.
Blizzardwing enters the den, saying he was worried. Hollyflower and Blizzardwing were facing each other in the shadows, both of them tense. Blackpaw wonders why Hollyflower would want to fight Blizzardwing. His mother coldly tells Blizzardwing that he didn't need to be concerned. Blizzardwing sighs, and tells Hollyflower that he cared about the kits, because they were his as well.
Blackpaw gasps at the revelation, quickly burrowing his muzzle into his flank. Blizzardwing already had a mate, Featherstorm. Hollyflower hisses at the tom, saying that he left her to raise them alone because he didn't want to tell Featherstorm the truth. Blackpaw, Flintpaw, and Fernpaw had talked about it many times, but Hollyflower had refused to tell them. Hot anger rushes through him, but a part of him wants to press his muzzle to Blizzardwing's as well. Blizzardwing turns away, and thinks that he didn't need a father. All he needed to know what that he was a part of ShadowClan.
Three days later, Blackpaw is feeling alright again, having spent days and nights thinking about Blizzardwing. He hadn't told any cat about it. Nearby, Brokenkit plays by himself. Blackpaw realizes that Brokenkit was always alone, and wonders if he was lonely, noting that they both had only one parent. Brokenkit's mother was a secret, while Blackpaw's father also was secret. Clawpaw lunges at Flintpaw, who dodges, and Fernpaw leaps onto Clawpaw, and Blackpaw and Nightpaw tussle.
Clawpaw says that because they are half-Clan cats, they may not be able to become warriors. Clawpaw asks who their father is, saying that he bets it was some kittypet and that he was surprised Cedarstar hadn't kicked them out. Blackpaw stomps away, muttering that he doesn't want to play anymore.
Brokenkit stops playing when Blackpaw sits, and tells him that other cats don't matter, as long as you can figure out how you can make them help you get your goal. Blackpaw explains that it's just that he knew that Clawpaw was wrong. Brokenkit figures out that he knew who his father was, that he was a ShadowClan cat, and says that maybe one day, Blackpaw would become a great warrior, then teach his father a lesson. Blackpaw brushes his tail over Brokenkit's back, telling the kit that he may be right.
Back in StarClan, Blizzardwing asks what he'd saw. Blackfoot replies that it was the moment he first knew that he was his father. Blizzardwing meows that he was sorry for hurting him, and asks if he wants his life. He states that he does, and tells him that with this life he gave him acceptance. Warmth floods through Blackfoot's body, and feels as if the future was before him, not his past. He thinks that he can handle it, and that maybe he had nothing to be ashamed of after all.
