Chapter description[]

His parents turn away, Hollyflower casting Blackfoot one last affectionate look before rejoining the ranks of StarClan. This time, Raggedstar steps out, and they greet each other respectfully. The former leader touches his scarred nose to Blackfoot's forehead, and almost immediately, the dead cats start to fade away and he is thrown back into the past.
Cheerfully, Blackfoot and his patrol discuss that WindClan didn't intrude onto their territory. Rowanberry and Nutwhisker comment that they know better than to do that, and swelling with pride, he passes through the bracken, thinking that by patrolling, he helped to keep ShadowClan safe. The Clan is peacefully carrying out their duties and relaxing.
Ashheart harshly scolds Brokenpaw at the edge of camp, threatening the apprentice with a moon of dealing with the elder's ticks. Deerpaw stands uncomfortably with a long scratch across his shoulder. The fight starts to escalate and Ashheart unsheathes her claws, but Blackfoot intervenes, telling the warrior that she cannot attack a apprentice. Ashheart tells Blackfoot on what Brokenpaw did, and that the punishment fit the crime. The muscular apprentice retorts that they wouldn't learn how to fight if they didn't use their claws during training. Blackfoot reminds Brokenpaw of the rules and tells Deerpaw to go get treated. Brokenpaw implies that Ashheart is a coward before sauntering off.
The she-cat and Blackfoot discuss her threats, and Ashheart states she didn't mean it. Blackfoot tells her not to take apprentices too seriously. Ashheart replies that Brokenpaw isn't a normal apprentice, and backs up, going off to tell Nightpelt. Blackfoot finds himself wondering why Cedarstar had given Brokenpaw to Nightpelt to train.
Blackfoot asks Brokenpaw if he was okay, and that he shouldn't fight his friends. Brokenpaw scornfully says that he does not have friends, only Clanmates. Brokenpaw tells him that a friend is a cat to hang out with, and that Clanmates were useless if they can't fight or hunt. Blackfoot is shocked, but tells himself that he just needs to be understood, saying that he would see that Clanmates were important once he was a warrior.
Later that day, Blackfoot is musing over whether what he said was right before being pulled aside by Raggedpelt. Raggedpelt meows that he'd heard that Blackfoot had stood up for Brokenpaw, and states that Brokenpaw would be a great warrior, sharing his hopes that he wouldn't feel unwanted. Blackfoot tells the deputy that he understood that, the other expressing his gratitude and Blackfoot promises to look out for Brokenpaw.
As the vision of his past disappears, Blackfoot reflects on what Brokenstar had done. Raggedstar mews that he can imagine what he had seen, and gives Blackfoot a life for trust, to have faith in his Clanmates. Blackfoot crouches as a spasm hit him, feeling the cats of ShadowClan around him, and thinks that he would trust them. Raggedstar bows his head, saying that they were wrong to put their faith in Brokenstar, and he swallows hard, wondering if he is wrong again to trust again.
