Chapter description[]

Blackfoot finishes receiving his life of compassion from Rosetail. He feels as if it is a punishment, not a reward of the nine lives ceremony. He wonders why StarClan is giving him a chance to be leader when they are showing him the terrible actions he has committed. However, Blackfoot thinks that there is no other cat to become leader of ShadowClan, and some cat would have to hold ShadowClan together. He remembers Nightstar, the sickly cat that died and did not return. As he was thinking about Nightstar's death, Bluestar comes and greets him. After having a flashback of the raid on ThunderClan, he is relieved to see no hostility in the former ThunderClan leader. Blackfoot recalls Brokenstar hating WindClan, and Tigerstar hating Firestar and thinks that disputes between ShadowClan and ThunderClan have become personal. The white tom thinks that Bluestar has no reason to hate him, but he remembers the time when he tried to steal her Clan's kits, demanding to hunt on ThunderClan territory, times he attacked ThunderClan's camp, and when he helped Tigerstar kill her. Soon, Bluestar touches her nose with his, and he recalls Tigerstar, who was Bluestar's deputy and his leader.
Blackfoot is frustrated that he could have gotten Brokenstar back, and everything could have gotten back to normal, but he has failed. He thinks that ShadowClan drove the former leader out because a lie that ThunderClan made them believe, that Brokenstar killed his father, Raggedstar. The white tom was very shocked that many ShadowClan cats believed ThunderClan's claim after following his former leader through countless battles, but they did. Blackfoot thinks that it is their fault that Brokenstar is a prisoner in ThunderClan. He is sure that ShadowClan will take them all back including Brokenstar after he sets his former leader free and explains everything. The white tom is desperate to go back to ShadowClan, and escape exile as a rogue.
Tangleburr mournfully says that if the RiverClan warriors did not show up, they would have beaten ThunderClan easily. When Blackfoot says that they have to try again, Snag asks why they should since Brokenstar is blind, so he can not lead his Clan. He argues that the blind tom fought well yesterday, without being able to see, but Tangleburr and Stumpytail exchange doubtful glances. Stumpytail proposes to the white tom that perhaps ShadowClan will take them back in without Brokenstar, but he replies firmly that they are not abandoning their former leader. The tom wonders if Tigerclaw will help him again, if ThunderClan does not figure out that he was the one that led them into the camp. Tigerclaw found Blackfoot and proposed that they join forces after the former ShadowClan leader was taken prisoner. Tigerclaw was going to use the attack to rescue Brokenstar as cover to attack his leader, Bluestar.
Tangleburr says to Blackfoot that Tigerclaw would have given Brokenstar to them if he had already killed Bluestar, and that he would probably be dead. The white tom thinks that if the dark brown tabby tom's plan has failed, ThunderClan will get rid of him, and that Tangleburr was probably right. However, he hears someone coming, and finds out it is Tigerclaw. The dark brown tabby tom is heavily injured, battered and staggering unsteadily. Blackfoot says to Tigerclaw that the ThunderClan cats fought better than he expected to, and especially Fireheart. Outraged, the tabby tom replies that Fireheart is a kittypet, and that he will find more cats and take on ThunderClan again and kill Fireheart. The white tom says that they are ready, and that they will have the whole of ShadowClan once they rescue Brokenstar. Tigerclaw tells Blackfoot that Brokenstar murdered him for trying to escape ThunderClan.
Blackfoot is very shocked, and he says that he is now an actual rogue, and will not ever be able to go back to ShadowClan. Tigerclaw tells him that they can get ShadowClan on their side. A faint spark of hope lit up in the white tom's chest, and he asks if they can. The dark brown tabby tom goes on and tells him that once they have ShadowClan, they can have their revenge on ThunderClan, which now has Fireheart as deputy of ThunderClan. He also says that ThunderClan has stolen his kits by driving him here and keeping them there, which makes Blackfoot even more outraged. The white tom asks the tabby tom if he has a plan, and he says he does, and he asks if he can follow him like he followed Brokenstar. Blackfoot promises Tigerclaw that he will not let him down.
