Chapter description[]

Bluefur dreams of a flood. Gales tug at her, making her teeter dangerously, and she stares down at the torrents. Snowfur and Whitekit's white pelts appear, Bluefur calling her sister's name hysterically. Bluefur races along the edge of the gorge, desperately heading toward where the gorge became calm, if they didn't die first. She feels their terror, sensing their panic as the water wrenched them down, cutting off the air. Where the gorge ends, Bluefur wades into the shallows, digging in her claws. Snowfur appears first, yowling to save Whitekit. Snowfur is then out of reach, but Whitekit hurtles to her, and thinking she could save him, Bluefur lunges and grabs him, dragging Whitekit onto land. Bluefur, coughing water, gasps that he was safe now, fiercely willing him to wake up. However, Whitekit lays still.
She wakes up to Fuzzypelt's complaint that the roof was leaking, and rain runs down her neck. Leaping out of the warrior's den, she bolts to the nursery, where she is met with eyes round with alarm. Robinwing asks what was wrong, frightened. She demands where Whitekit was, and the white kit appears. She curls around him, gratefully thinking it was only a dream. Bluefur protectively watches him until dawn, where he shows her a perfect hunting crouch, which he says he learned it from Lionheart. Swiftbreeze's kit, Spottedkit wakes up, and Whitekit offers to teach her the hunting crouch.
Bluefur thanks Robinwing for taking care of Whitekit, and the dusky brown queen replies that he was lovely. Robinwing tells her that kits were forgiving, and she could change everything. Bluefur whispers that she wanted to, and plays witih Whitekit until Thistleclaw arrives. He spits at her to get out, and urges Whitekit away to practice battle moves. Bluefur meows he's not ready, white Thistleclaw fires back that how she would know. The spiky warrior continues that he was all Whitekit had now, and though Bluefur argues he had her too, the tom ignores her and pads away with Whitekit at his side.
Goosefeather whispers in her ear that an thistle with sharp thorns could hurt Whitekit, and warns her to not let it happen. The medicine cat amblues away, and Bluefur looks at him, frustrated that he spoke in nonsense and riddle. Sunstar calls to her, stating he was organizing patrols. Warriors circled around him, and, inquiring after Tawnyspots, discovers that the deputy had recently been sick is bouts that passed in a few days. The Clan leader informs her that while the dawn patrol was gone, he was happy to see her with Whitekit, and tells her to go hunting with Thistleclaw. She suddenly feels anxious, but thinks that at least Whitekit would be able to eat.
Bluefur follows Thistleclaw through the pines, proclaiming again and again that Sunstar would have to state that they would take back Sunningrocks, and that the other Clans were expecting it and it would also make them look weak. Pausing, Bluefur scents a squirrel but is unable to catch it due to Thistleclaw yowling that there was an intruder. She tastes the air, scents nothing, but Thisleclaw meows that there was a kittypet invasion. Following him, she finds that it wasn't exactly an invasion - just a slight scent.
She points out it was a kit, and that kits didn't become a adult in on afternoon. Thistleclaw asks if she wanted to share prey with them, and climbs up onto a Twoleg fence. Bluefur hisses at him to come back, but the arrogant tom calls back that there were no scent markers. Telling him to lower his voice, she tells him that she saw no need to start a fight. Thistleclaw faces her, and meows that she was too soft on warriors and other Clans, pointing out that she'd talked to Oakheart before. He asks if she cared about her Clan, and she hisses that she was loyal and wasn't having a friendly talk with the RiverClan tom. Thistleclaw snarls that he needed more proof before letting her near Whitekit, and that she wasn't there when he needed her, and tells Bluefur to back off and keep away or he'd make her.
