Chapter description[]
- Bluefur lays in the nursery as her kitting begins. Featherwhisker crouches over her, instructing his new apprentice, Spottedpaw, explaining that queens can be irritable after Bluefur hisses at her. As the first kit is born, he instructs the apprentice on how to care for it, before pushing the tiny tom to his mother's belly. Two more kits are born shortly after, both she-kits. Thrushpelt pushes his way into the den, purring happily. Bluefur thinks about how she had decided to not tell her Clanmates who the father was, grateful to the sandy colored tom for not betraying her secret and allowing the Clan to believe that he was the kits' father. She decides to name the kits Mistykit, Stonekit, and Mosskit, as the names remind her of the river.
- Half a moon later, Bluefur's kits are playing in the snow with their denmates. Bluefur worries about them becoming too cold, and White-eye assures her that they're all fine. As her Clanmates mill about the camp, Sunstar and Stormtail examine the fresh-kill pile, worried about the lack of prey. Goosefeather approaches, reminding her of the prophecy, before telling her that he saw her at Fourtrees with Oakheart. The elder assures her that he won't judge her, before retiring back to his den. A hunting patrol returns, and Sunstar orders them to give the single piece of prey to the queens. Bluefur and White-eye split it, offering the rest to the elders. Featherwhisker explains that Tawnyspots is not getting any better as Bluefur has a vision of Thistleclaw, covered in blood.
- At the next Gathering, Bluefur seeks out Oakheart, telling him about the kits. He mentions wishing he could see them, before Bluefur begs him to take them to RiverClan. He warns her that they'll never know that she was their mother, telling her that he could see how much she loved them. She explains to him that she needs to save her Clan, and that this will be for the best. He promises that they'll know they have been loved, before Bluefur wrenches herself away, disappearing into the crowd of gathered cats.
