Chapter description[]

At the top of a slope, Bluestar watches as the ThunderClan deputy, Fireheart, leads the dog pack away to the gorge in order to stop them from slaughtering the Clan. As she runs down the slope and through the trees, the pack leader takes Fireheart into its jaws and begins to skid towards the water. Bluestar flings herself at the leader, slamming into its flank and forcing it to drop Fireheart. She attacks the dog, but it slides away from her as the edge of the gorge crumbles. The dog reaches forward and grasps Bluestar's foreleg in its jaws, dragging her over the edge. They both fall into the river, and the water drags her down. Bluestar has a vision of Oakheart, where he guides her through swimming, before Fireheart and her children, Mistyfoot and Stonefur, come to her rescue.
Bluestar opens her eyes and finds all the three warriors standing over her. Bluestar wants to thank them as she realizes she is dying. She asks Mistyfoot and Stonefur to forgive her for sending them away, explaining that she had to in order to stop Thistleclaw from becoming deputy and potentially leading many cats to their deaths. She mentions that Oakheart promised Graypool would be a good mother to them. Stonefur flatly says she was, and Bluestar states that she owes Graypool and Oakheart so much.
Bluestar tells her kits that if she made a different choice, they would have given all their strength to ThunderClan and asks them to forgive her. As Mistyfoot and Stonefur exchange uncertain glances, Fireheart puts in that she suffered a lot of pain for her choice. Bluestar silently tells him to stop it, wanting them to forgive her of their own accord. Mistyfoot bends her head and licks Bluestar's cheek, saying they forgive her. Stonefur echoes Mistyfoot and the two groom her for the final time. Bluestar releases her hold on her last life, trusting Fireheart to keep her Clan safe.
