"Mistystar, tell us how you really feel about changes to the code. If StarClan made you leader, how can any cat take that away? After all that you've led the Clan through, how does it feel to know that we could start conspiring to get rid of you?"
— Brackenpelt to Mistystar about changes being made to the warrior code in River, page 57

Brackenpelt is a tortoiseshell she-cat[1] with a shredded ear.[7]

Brackenpelt is a RiverClan warrior who has served under Mistystar's, Owlnose's, Tigerstar's, Duskfur's, and Splashtail's leaderships in the lake territories. She was born to Mallownose and Petalfur alongside her brothers, Jayclaw and Owlnose. As a warrior, Brackenpelt was taken prisoner and tortured by Darktail and his Kin, but recovered in ThunderClan. She later mentored Gorseclaw, and disagreed with changes being made to the warrior code. During Tigerstar and ShadowClan's takeover of RiverClan, Brackenpelt spoke out against the occupation.

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

Shattered Sky[]

"Hush! Violetpaw is one of Darktail's cats."
―Brackenpelt to Mintfur about insulting Darktail in front of Violetpaw Shattered Sky, page 158
When the Kin has just taken over RiverClan, Brackenpelt holds up a front paw as she totters upright. Despite Mistystar's clear reluctance, Darktail keeps the injured as the Kin's prisoners. Brackenpelt, Mintfur, Icewing, and Reedwhisker are all kept under guard in a bramble thicket and demanded to swear an oath of loyalty to the Kin. They initially refuse, but after days of being tortured with starvation, they eventually give in. Darktail, however, continues to starve them for his own amusement, only feeding them a couple of scrawny mice, which is barely enough for even just one hungry cat.
Brackenpelt tries to groom herself, but the act of turning her head seems to exhaust her. She gives some feeble licks before flopping down, panting. Brackenpelt thanks StarClan when she sees that Violetpaw has brought a vole, her mouth starting to water. Mintfur declares Darktail is the cruelest cat he has ever met, but Brackenpelt tells him to be quiet. Giving a warning prod, she reminds him that Violetpaw is one of Darktail's cats, but Mintfur insists he still does not care. A fight in the RiverClan camp breaks out, involving the prisoners and some rogues. Despite their bad health and shape, the captured warriors fight bravely, and manage to break free. Alderheart notices some fur missing off Brackenpelt when he checks out their wounds.

Darkest Night[]

After escaping from Darktail's rogues, Brackenpelt is recovering, alongside the rest of her Clanmates. Flanked by Lakeheart and Mallownose, the weakened and thin RiverClan cats are watched carefully by those around them. She joins Lakeheart and Owlnose in a debate over prey, and the RiverClan cat glares at Molewhisker, who, despite claims from RiverClan, states that there is more than enough food to go around. Brackenpelt's leader, Mistystar, soon returns, and tells her RiverClan warriors that she hopes they are getting along well, as ThunderClan has shown them a great deal of kindness. In response to this, Brackenpelt and the others do not make eye contact with Mistystar and do not reply.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

In RiverClan's camp, Brackenpelt challenges Mistystar about the changes being made to the warrior code, including how the Clan can overthrow their leader. Other cats agree with Brackenpelt's words. After Mistystar dies, Brackenpelt questions Frostpaw's certainty that Mistystar is safe in StarClan. After Reedwhisker's disappearance, Brackenpelt and Sneezecloud journey to ShadowClan's camp and ask if they have seen him, though they do not answer when Cloverfoot presses for clarification.

Sky[]

"[Darktail] took over ShadowClan. And then RiverClan. He nearly destroyed them both. Do you want to be remembered like him?"
―Brackenpelt to Tigerstar Sky, page 220
When Owlnose is chosen to be leader, Brackenpelt nudges her brother forward. Owlnose hunts with Brackenpelt, Podlight, Sneezecloud, Splashtail, and Mallownose, though Brackenpelt, Podlight, and Splashtail fall into the river when the riverbank collapses. Brackenpelt hits her head when she falls, and Splashtail helps her to Mothwing's den. Brackenpelt is dazed when Frostpaw treats her. When Owlnose does not receive his nine lives, Brackenpelt wonders if StarClan is just testing them. When Tigerstar offers to lead RiverClan temporarily, Brackenpelt brings up Darktail's reign as a counter argument.

Shadow[]

Brackenpelt speaks out against Tigerstar, their new temporary leader, and the ShadowClan warriors' presence in their camp.

Wind[]

Brackenpelt participates in a fierce battle training session against Duskfur.

In the Super Editions[]

Bramblestar's Storm[]

Unnamed, Brackenpelt is mentioned at a Gathering by Mistystar as one of Petalfur and Mallownose's new kits.
