Chapter description[]

The ThunderClan cats tense upon hearing a she-cat crying out, and Graystripe proclaims that they must go help. Bramblestar is anxious about potential danger, and Thornclaw is disgruntled that they are putting themselves at risk for a stranger, but Graystripe tells his Clanmate to show some compassion. The cats scale ivy vines beside a Twoleg den, and the she-cat's cries intensify. Bramblestar sees her floating in a wooden object below, and she bursts out that her housefolk took Brandy and Polly when the lake flooded but could not find her fast enough. Bramblestar wonders how they can reach her, and Thornclaw suggests walking across the wooden ledges on the wall, which Graystripe calls windowsills. Bramblestar considers this and decides that only he and Thornclaw should try it, but the rest of his Clanmates insist on following. Bramblestar leads the way across the narrow ledges; however Graystripe notices that the wood is rotten and unstable on one of them and states that they must go into the Twoleg den. Below, the she-cat is anxious, and when she sees them trying to get into the windows, she suggests pressing them at the top. The bottom pops open, and Graystripe leads the way into the den.
Inside, the unfamiliar sights are disconcerting to Bramblestar and the other cats, and Graystripe leads the way. Bramblestar notices how the soft pelts underfoot might be good for cats to sleep on. They descend a slope that Graystripe calls stairs, and Bramblestar steps into the water through a gap in the walls. He finds a chair to stand on, and at Graystripe's suggestion, he jumps onto a nearby table. The other cats do the same, and the kittypet she-cat wails that the tub is sinking. The Clan cats leap onto the fence around the den, but Bramblestar loses his footing and falls into the water. The kittypet cries out to him, and he swims to her tub. The leader pushes the tub to a nearby monster, and the two cats climb onto the monster's back. The she-cat thanks Bramblestar and introduces herself as Minty, and the leader introduces himself and his companions.
The four Clan cats debate on what to do with Minty, and she pleads to let her join them and inquires where their housefolk live. When Bramblestar explains that they are Clan cats, Minty exclaims wide-eyed that they are dangerous and ferocious. He assures her that they only eat mice, birds, and squirrels; not cats, but this also scares Minty. After some hesitation, she decides to go with the Clan cats. They help Minty jump up a fence, and gazing at the flood below, she exclaims that she is the only one left from the Twoleg dens around her. Graystripe comforts the kittypet. When they reach the end of the fence, Minty is alarmed that she must swim. Dovewing pushes her into the water, and she thrashes furiously; Bramblestar helps her to the other side. As they walk through ShadowClan territory, Minty is very talkative and asks a multitude of questions. Bramblestar thinks to himself that ThunderClan does not need more cats to take care of, but he could not let Minty starve. They cross the border to ThunderClan territory, and as the hollow comes into view, Bramblestar wonders if everything is simply underwater or if their home has been completely washed away.
