Chapter description[]
- Bramblestar gathers the Clan for a meeting. He states that if ShadowClan does not drive out the badgers within a quarter moon, ThunderClan will help. His words are met with anger, and although he knows they must listen to him, he is still worried he is wrong. Once Bramblestar ends the meeting, Daisy growls that she came to keep herself and her kits safe, but he is sending them into danger again. Jessy says that Bramblestar is right, and assures Daisy that she will be fine. Daisy says that she trusts him but still does not like it, and when the cream she-cat leaves, he thanks Jessy. Bramblestar wonders what Firestar would have done, and he joins the others, who are being sorted into groups for training. Before the cats disperse, Squirrelflight reminds them some have fought badgers before and know what strategies work. Bramblestar follows Brackenfur's group, but the apprentices struggle to learn the move. Ivypool hisses that they need to dig in their claws, bite its neck, and attack its eyes if they can. Bramblestar is surprised at her harsh advice but then realizes that she trained in the Dark Forest. The apprentices improve after listening to Ivypool's advice.
- After returning to the camp, Bramblestar notices that the Clan is in better spirits. He asks Squirrelflight how the kittypets did, and she replies that Frankie and Jessy are eager, but Minty is too hesitant. Daisy joins them and says that Minty can stay behind with her, and a few warriors should also defend the camp. Leafpool tells Bramblestar that Cinderheart should also stay behind. He is confused, and Leafpool looks troubled, but she walks away. Bramblestar asks if she had a bad omen, but he then remembers how her mentor, Cinderpelt, was killed by badgers. He assures Leafpool that he will keep the Clan safe. Bramblestar joins Jessy, and he admires her courage at being so willing to fight. He leans into Jessy, but she has a bruise on her side.
- Bramblestar later patrols the ShadowClan border, and there has been no more news about the badgers. He recognizes Tawnypelt's scent and finds her. He tells her that ThunderClan will help, but they need to know what Rowanstar's plans are. Tawnypelt is surprised and meows that they will attack tomorrow night. A cat calls for Tawnypelt, and she thanks Bramblestar and leaves. The tom goes back to the camp and tells Squirrelflight of ShadowClan's plans. Bramblestar then leaves to check the floodwater levels, and Lionblaze joins him. The warrior reveals that Cinderheart is expecting their kits, and Bramblestar congratulates him. Lionblaze asks if he can tell her to not fight, and he replies that he will try. The floodwater has receded in both the lake and the hollow. When they return to the camp, Bramblestar congratulates Cinderheart and suggests not fighting. She is irritated, but Sandstorm tells her that she also has to think of her kits, and there is still work in the camp. Her annoyance fades, and she agrees to stay. Bramblestar walks away and tells Squirrelflight about the kits. She is joyful at the news, but Bramblestar then states that she does not need to organize more battle training, as they will fight soon. The deputy nods and tells him that his warriors are ready.
