"I can never thank you enough for what you did tonight. This was more than ThunderClan protecting its own hunting grounds, wasn't it? You came because you are my brother, and I needed you."

Chapter description[]

Bramblestar sees Squirrelflight, who leaps at the badger and springs up again just as she touches the ground. The badger's blow falls, but it barely touches Tawnypelt. The massive animal then throws Squirrelflight to the ground. She gets back up, and Bramblestar races over to them. He and Tawnypelt force the badger back, and the tortoiseshell snarls at it. The badger lumbers away, and Bramblestar flings himself at the badger that Crowfrost is fighting. The badger pins him down, but the weight is taken off him when Bumblestripe begins to fight the creature. Spiderleg comes over to take Crowfrost away, who is wounded and lying on the ground. Bramblestar thanks Bumblestripe, and asks where Dovewing is. The gray she-cat is fighting with Tigerheart with an unspoken closeness, and Bramblestar wonders where they learned to fight together. The badgers begin to flee, and Bramblestar is relieved.
However, a large, ferocious badger is going for two ShadowClan apprentices, and Bramblestar goes forward. Jessy then goes in front of the badger, and lures it to the edge of the trees. She says that she knows what she is doing, and Bramblestar is terrified for the she-cat and runs with her. He knows he is too slow and the badger will outrun him, and the two cats stop at the edge of a stream. He gasps that they are trapped, but Jessy begins running downstream, and meows for him to follow her. The she-cat leaps into the water, and Bramblestar realizes that she is still standing. He goes in beside her, and Jessy pants that there is a tree trunk underwater. The badger also dives in, but it does not know where the trunk is and begins to be washed away. He remarks that she isn't bad for a kittypet, and she answers that he isn't bad for a wild cat. The two cats race back to the clearing, and Bramblestar asks how Crowfrost is. Pouncetail answers that ShadowClan tom will be fine. Bramblestar sees that all of the wounds will heal in time, and triumphantly thinks that they won.
Brightheart than walks up to Bramblestar, and whispers for him to see Dustpelt. Dustpelt is lying in the debris, and is severely wounded. Bramblestar begs for him to hold on, but the tabby rasps that it is his time. The leader cries that Dustpelt has served his Clan so well, and it is now their turn to serve him. Dustpelt murmurs that he does not want to be an elder, and thanks Bramblestar for everything. A pale, starry she-cat gazes at the fallen warrior, and other cats also appear. Bramblestar realizes that it is Ferncloud and all the dead kits of Dustpelt. Dustpelt rises, and pads up to his mate. The starry cats fade, and Bramblestar sighs. Tawnypelt whispers that she is sorry, and the Clans will grieve for Dustpelt. He suddenly feels tired, and his sister meows that she can never thank him enough. The leader remembers his vision of the lake becoming scarlet, and Firestar and Yellowfang's messages. He realizes that Tawnypelt shares his blood, and their kinship gave them strength. Rowanstar then tells Tawnypelt to go back to camp, and the ShadowClan tom meows to Bramblestar that he thanks ThunderClan for their help, but they didn't ask for it. Rowanstar glares at Bramblestar and growls for him to not be like Firestar and stop interfering.
