"You can be sure that all the Clans will remember their dead for as long as the forest lasts. Ancestors of all the Clans, look down on us here and guide us through the hard days to come. Welcome the new starry warriors among you, and keep the memory of them fresh in our minds. We honor them, and all of you, now and always."

Chapter description[]

Blackstar insists on commemorating the fallen, but many cats are dissatisfied with Blackstar trying to speak for all the Clans. Bramblestar agrees, but Blackstar hisses that the Clans fought as one during the Great Battle, and he prepares to leave. However, Rowanclaw says that times are simply changing and persuades his leader to stay. Mistystar nods, and gazing at the sky, she says that the Clans will forever honor the fallen. She then begins the Gathering, and both she and Blackstar report new kits. Onestar reports good hunting, and Bramblestar introduces ThunderClan's five new apprentices. Clouds soon drift over the moon.
When Bramblestar leaps off the Great Oak, he notices Squirrelflight staring pointedly at Tigerheart and Ratscar. She expresses her distrust toward them, as they trained in the Dark Forest; Bramblestar does not argue, knowing that reconciliation with those cats will take time. He then chats with Tawnypelt and praises Rowanclaw's earlier words. Tigerheart asks after Dovewing, and Ivypool states that she stayed in the camp. Bramblestar wonders why the tom wants to see Dovewing, and he then reflects on how the Clans need to be independent again. Squirrelflight reminds him that they need to leave, and Pouncetail lightly comments that he is lucky to have Squirrelflight keeping him in line.
As Bramblestar nears the camp, Daisy frantically tells him that Smoky was watching the Clan attend the Gathering but was too afraid to approach, which is abnormal for him. The leader states that they can go to the horseplace together later. When Daisy leaves, Graystripe wonders if she wants to return to her old life due to not having kits to care for. After sunhigh, Bramblestar and Daisy depart for the horseplace. Near the lakeshore, Amberpaw and Dewpaw ambush Daisy; when their mentors come, they explain that they were practicing stalking. Whitewing and Spiderleg scold Amberpaw and Dewpaw, and the two young cats apologize to Daisy. The cream she-cat assures them that she knows they were just practicing. As she and Bramblestar continue walking, the leader reflects on how much she does for the Clan and the respect she deserves. As they approach the horseplace, massive horses appear. Bramblestar and Daisy enter a gap in the bushes.
Smoky notices the two cats and warmly greets Daisy. She asks where Floss is, and Smoky gravely replies that she died from greencough. The tom leads her to the burial spot of Floss and Pip, a dog; Daisy is shocked at the loss. A young tortoiseshell she-cat arrives, who Smoky introduces as Coriander, Floss' replacement. Daisy is affronted that anyone can replace Floss, but Bramblestar silently warns her not to get too upset. Coriander asks why strange forest cats are at the horseplace. Smoky explains that he was spectating the Clan cats the previous night because Coriander wanted to see them. Daisy is disappointed that he did not come to talk, and she then states that she and Bramblestar must leave. Smoky offers to show her the barn, and the cream she-cat halfheartedly follows. Upon seeing the inside, she comments that everything has changed. Bramblestar and Daisy take their leave; Coriander flippantly comments to watch out for the horses. As they return to ThunderClan territory, Daisy remarks how she never expected so much to change without her knowing. Briefly, Bramblestar recalls Squirrelflight trying to feed vole to their three young kits. He tells Daisy that nothing ever stays the same.
