Chapter description[]

After the visit to the horseplace, the weather worsens. There is a strong wind, sending branches falling, so Bramblestar warns his Clan to look out for falling trees. He continues to watch the ShadowClan border, but there are no more signs of trespassing. He mentions this to his patrol; Sandstorm says to enjoy the peace and Bramblestar agrees. The patrol continues along a stream, and emerge on the lakeshore. Blossomfall quickly runs off and announces the lake is rising and that she had marked some stones, but a wave suddenly carries her into the lake. She struggles, and Molewhisker is about to help her, but is stopped by Bramblestar. Sandstorm calls out to him, and she is trying to tug a tree branch free. Bramblestar helps her dislodge it. They drag it into the water, and the branch bobs in the strong waves. Blossomfall's head is still above the water, but is out of reach from the branch. He tells the warriors to put their weight on the branch and not let it move.
He carefully walks across the branch until it is too narrow, and Bramblestar expects to be washed away at any moment. He yowls to Blossomfall, who makes a dive toward him. The she-cat bites his tail, and he pulls her toward the branch, sending drops of blood scattering. The two other warriors drag the branch onshore, and Bramblestar and Blossomfall wade out of the lake. Blossomfall thanks Bramblestar for saving her, and Bramblestar says that he will order cats to stay away from the lake. He asks Sandstorm to take Blossomfall to Jayfeather. Blossomfall objects, saying she can keep going, and struggles to her paws. Bramblestar hesitates, wondering if Blossomfall was trying to prove her loyalty, but then tells himself to not question the Dark Forest trainees. He warns her to tell him if she wanted to stop, and Blossomfall insists she is fine.
He leads his patrol along the stream at the WindClan border, and sees WindClan cats going after a few white birds. The bird flies away, and Sandstorm exclaims that she's never seen WindClan hunt like that. Molewhisker is impressed and says that the birds were big, and Bramblestar wonders how hungry the WindClan cats were to hunt like that. The wind blew WindClan's scent everywhere, and scent markers were no use. Bramblestar looks at the lake and thinks that it was larger than usual, and Sandstorm remarks that it was once empty. Blossomfall begins to explain how the water came back, but is cut off when a white bird over her head and lands in a bush. Molewhisker makes the catch, and Bramblestar sees that WindClan had already wounded it. Across the stream, Nightcloud, Hootpaw, and Gorsetail stop them, and Nightcloud proclaims it is WindClan's prey. Bramblestar answers that it was in ThunderClan territory, much to the fury of the WindClan cats. Nightcloud shows white feathers stuck in her claws, and says that if it weren't for them, ThunderClan wouldn't have caught it. Hootpaw adds that rabbits ware scarcer in WindClan, but is silenced by Nightcloud. Sandstorm whispers that Firestar would have let them have it, and Bramblestar answeres he isn't Firestar, and Gorsetail overhears. He furiously stalks away with the bird, thinking that what Onestar said about the sun-drown-place birds was true.
When they return to the camp, Berrynose, Ivypool, and Cherryfall all praise Molewhisker on his catch, much to Bramblestar's amusement. He calls to Squirrelflight, and asks her what the bird's scent reminds her of. They agree that it was from the[sun-drown-place, and that the wind must've been very strong to blow it all the way over. Squirrelflight then yowls that there was prey for everyone. That night, Bramblestar is disturbed by the wind and is troubled by nightmares and barely sleeps. He is woken by Jayfeather, who tells him that he saw something terrible when he went out before dawn. Jayfeather leads him along the disused Thunderpath until they arrive at the abandoned Twoleg nest where him and Leafpool had planted the herbs. He sees in dismay that the plants had been destroyed by a fallen branch, and Bramblestar says that he can send a patrol to fix it. However, this is not what Jayfeather is the most concerned about, and he says that it is an omenthat something terrible will happen. Bramblestar fearfully asks if it is the Dark Forest again, but Jayfeather says that it is something different that he does not know yet.
