| "But I wouldn't give up being a warrior—not for anything." |
| — Brushpaw to Tansypaw in Onestar's Confession, page 38 |
Brushpaw is a sturdy ginger tom.[6]
Brushpaw was a WindClan apprentice who served under Tallstar's leadership in the forest territories. He was born as a kittypet named Leo, but he later joined WindClan with his mother, Bailey, and sister, Melody. He was granted a place in WindClan temporarily, to give him a chance to prove his worth, and was renamed to Brushpaw. Tallstar assigned Mudclaw as his mentor, and he tried his best to listen to his mentor. However, he struggled as his training progressed, though he was granted another chance after failing his warrior assessment. During a battle against ShadowClan, Brushpaw was gravely wounded, and he later died from infection. Brushpaw joined StarClan, and he later gave his dear friend Onewhisker a life for friendship in his leadership ceremony.

- Bailey takes her two kits, Leo and Melody, into WindClan's territory to practice hunting where they encounter Mudclaw, Wrenflight, Deadfoot, and Onepaw. As they are escorted out of WindClan's territory, Onepaw strikes up a conversation with Leo and Melody. However, they are attacked by a badger. Leo praises his mother after seeing her effort in taking down the badger. When Bailey brings up the idea of her kits becoming Clan warriors, Leo is excited about the idea, while Melody rolls her eyes. Mudclaw calls the kits soft and useless, provoking Leo to fluff his fur out. In the end, Deadfoot decides to take them to Tallstar. Bailey pleads her case, and Tallstar concedes in having Leo and Melody join their Clan after getting an enthusiastic response from the former. The WindClan leader names them Brushpaw and Tansypaw, with Mudclaw and Wrenflight as their mentors respectively.
- Onepaw participates in Brushpaw's first training session, and Mudclaw demonstrates a dart and slash technique against badgers. After some fumbling, Brushpaw quickly improves, and Onepaw thinks that he is going to become a great fighter. Brushpaw eagerly explains to his sister what he learned during training, though he reminds Tansypaw that they would not be going back to the Twolegplace. A moon later, Tansypaw laments about missing the Twolegplace, and Brushpaw shares her sorrow to a degree. When Onepaw expresses his curiosity about the Twolegplace, Brushpaw and Tansypaw eagerly invite to show him and Morningpaw to explore.
- While crossing a Thunderpath, the former kittypets concede that they are a bit lost, not knowing where their Twoleg nest was. Morningpaw brings up the idea of going home, but Brushpaw is against it, saying that their home is really nice. The young cats encounter a dog, and after raindrops start heavily pouring down, the cats hide in a garage to wait. They accidentally fall asleep through the night and hurry back to camp at dawn, where they are caught by Deadfoot's search party. Tallstar is inclined to send Brushpaw and Tansypaw away for their foolish idea, but Onepaw and Morningpaw stand up for their denmates. Tallstar allows the former kittypets to stay, but he puts all four of them on the lower-tier apprentice tasks. While cleaning the nursery, Tansypaw and Brushpaw are tempted to return to their housefolk, but Onepaw and Morningpaw convince them to stay.
- Two moons later, Brushpaw continues to sneak the other apprentices to the Twolegplace. He and Onepaw boast about their adventures to a curious group of kittypets. The pair return back to camp in time to join the evening hunting patrol, though both Brushpaw and Onepaw hunt poorly due to their exhaustion. Deadfoot announces that the five apprentices will have their warrior assessments the following day, though Brushpaw worries that he and his sister are not ready. In the morning, both apprentices fail to catch anything, much to Onepaw's horror. Tallstar expresses his disappointment and concludes this test trial has failed. While Tansypaw is eager to return to the Twolegplace, Brushpaw asks for a second chance, which Tallstar accepts.
- Days later, Mudclaw berates Brushpaw for performing poorly during his training session before ordering him to bring prey to the elders. Onewhisker attempts to reassure his friend, but Brushpaw is worried that kittypets are not meant to be warriors. While patrolling near the ShadowClan border, Brushpaw, Onewhisker, Mudclaw, and Ashfoot catch Amberleaf, Scorchwind, and Finchflight stealing prey. They attack, and Finchflight pins Brushpaw down and slashes his flanks. Mudclaw batters Finchflight away, and the ShadowClan patrol leaves. Brushpaw's wounds are extensive, and Mudclaw reassures his apprentice that he fought like a warrior. Barkface treats Brushpaw's wounds, but the medicine cat worries about infection. However, Brushpaw succumbs to his wounds half a moon later. During his vigil, Onewhisker privately blames himself for convincing Brushpaw to stay in WindClan. After the vigil for Brushpaw, Onewhisker escorts Bailey back to the Twolegplace.
- Seasons later, Onewhisker confides with Ashfoot that kittypets can become warriors after Fireheart helped to bring WindClan home. When Onewhisker receives his nine lives, he is surprised to see Brushpaw in StarClan. Brushpaw excitedly greets his friend, and he grants him a life for friendship. Later, Onestar tells Melody that he saw Brushpaw in StarClan, and Melody hopes that their mother, who had died a few moons ago, knows that Brushpaw is okay.

- ―Brushpaw during training Onestar's Confession, page 29
- "Of course, it takes a lot of courage to live in the wild like we do. We have to fight dogs and foxes and other Clans of ferocious warriors every day. But we're tough enough to handle it. After all, we've been through so much training—which only the best warriors survive."
- ―Brushpaw to a group of kittypets Onestar's Confession, page 57
- "I want to stay. I'm sorry I failed my assessment today, but I won't fail again. In my heart I know that I'm a WindClan cat."
- ―Brushpaw to Tallstar Onestar's Confession, page 65
- Brushpaw: "I'm having a tough time. You must have heard Mudclaw just now. I'm not getting any better at battle moves or hunting. I can't blame him for running out of patience. It's awful, being the only apprentice. There's no other cat to work with, and I'm so lonely and bored."
- Onewhisker: "It'll get better. I'll practice with you if you like."
- Onestar's Confession, pages 70-71
- "Brushpaw was a cheerful presence around the camp, and I think I can say that we all liked him. It was brave for a kittypet to try to become a warrior."
- ―Tallstar during Brushpaw's vigil Onestar's Confession, page 79
- "It was hard, and I miss Bailey and Melody. But it's great here in StarClan. I've met so many brilliant cats! There was— Oh... yeah. Sorry, Onewhisker. I give you a life for friendship. Use it well to strengthen the bonds between cat and cat."
