Buttercup is one of many kittypets trapped in a Twoleg nest with a neglectful Twoleg. When Graystripe arrives and encourages the cats to brainstorm a way out, Buttercup suggests attacking the Twoleg when she opens the door. Many of the cats agree to his plan, but Petunia shoots it down, saying that the Twoleg saved her and she loves her. Buttercup snorts in contempt, and Petunia scornfully explains that it is not the Twoleg's fault that she is old and sick, and that she does not mean to hurt the cats.

The cats later manage to escape the den, and Graystripe leads them to WarriorClan territory. He tells them to decide what life they want to lead, and Buttercup says that he wants to live in the wild. A black-and-white she-cat says that she wants to find nicer Twolegs to live with, and Buttercup scoffs. Petunia bats him over the ears with her tail and tells him to keep his jaws shut and that there are good Twolegs out there if you look for them. Buttercup joins in enthusiastically as the cats discuss their possible future adventures.

As Graystripe leaves WarriorClan territory, he sees Monkeystar leading Buttercup and two of the other escaped cats along the border. She asks them what they would do if they met any other cats, and Buttercup asks if they would rip their throats out. Monkeystar rolls her eyes and says that there will be no throat-ripping while she is leader, and that they will just ask them to leave. A tabby-and-white she-cat asks what they will do if the intruders refuse to leave, and Buttercup insists that they rip their throats out. Monkeystar asks him if he learned anything from Graystripe, who did not attack the Twolegs who came looking for them. The two other cats praise Graystripe for what he did for them, and Buttercup reluctantly agrees that Graystripe is pretty special. They talk a bit more about Graystripe before Monkeystar orders them to finish the border patrol and leads them out of Graystripe's sight.
