Chapter description[]
- The chapter begins with Rock telling Mosskit, Adderkit, and Blossomkit about ShadowClan.
- Rock then goes on to telling the three kits about a few ShadowClan cats.
Tigerstar[]
- Rock says it would be interesting to see if Tigerstar counts himself as a ThunderClan cat or a ShadowClan cat. He says he lives in a shadowy forest and mentions his daughter, Tawnypelt, and how she had refused Tigerstar's help. Rock hears the kits scratching their claws against the stone floor. Rock lists the fallen cats that died because of Tigerstar: Redtail, Runningwind, Brindleface, Swiftpaw, Bluestar, and Stonefur. He mentions that he is at fault for his death, as he brought Scourge to the forest. Rock mentions he now walks a Dark Forest with Hawkfrost for little company. Rock wonders if he remembers the massacre of half-Clan blood. They still whisper in the ears of kits that show the same promise he did, and mentions Lionpaw to be careful.
Brokenstar[]
- Rock starts by saying his birth was forbidden, a disgrace between Yellowfang and Raggedstar. He was taken care of by Lizardstripe, but, desperate to prove himself, killed his father. StarClan could only watch WindClan and ThunderClan get massacred. Even when ThunderClan took him in, he plotted with Darkstripe and Tigerstar against them. Rock ends by saying he is shocked that Brokenstar did not die violently, instead by Yellowfang avenging every kit he killed.
Blackstar[]
- Rock starts by saying it will be many lifetimes before the clans forget the evils ShadowClan's leaders before him caused. He thought of Tigerstar as a cat who would fix his clan. He doesn't boast about the old times, and is respectful of other clans at Gatherings, despite the lack of food. Mosskit bristles her fur, and Rock finishes by saying he should not be punished for having pride in his clan.
Tawnypelt[]
- Rock starts by saying she finds it hard to fear ShadowClan. While she never followed Tigerstar, she wanted to be judged by the actions of her own. He points out that when she was chosen on the journey to find Midnight, she recognized her peers' advantages. Rock states she knows true loyalty, refusing to join Tigerstar, and thinks it does not need to be solved with claws.
Boulder[]
- Rock starts by saying that Boulder was born as a BloodClan cat. He states he put the pact of blood between Tigerstar and Scourge into play. He says that he is not an evil cat, but was blinded by his ambition of being a clan warrior. The only thing he remembered about BloodClan is how much they could make his clan powerful, willing to kill a cat for no remorse, a price he would have to pay in the end.
Littlecloud and Runningnose[]
- Runningnose tried saving ShadowClan from Brokenstar's tryanny, trying to save kits while also trying to avoid his mentors' fate. He regrets when he asked Yellowfang to become an apprentice. The biggest secret he knew, however, was Nightstar's lack of 9 lives. Rock then moves on to Littlecloud, who became a medicine cat because of Cinderpelt saving his life from ShadowClan's great sickness, and will never forget the debt he owes to her.
