Chester is a warrior of WarriorClan under Monkeystar's leadership. When Graystripe passes through RiverClan's old territory, he is jumped by Monkeystar, who tells him that he is in WarriorClan territory. The rest of WarriorClan introduces themselves, with Chester being the last to do so. When Graystripe appears puzzled, Chester tells him that it seemed like too much to keep track of to have one name at home and a different one in WarriorClan. Although Chester decides to stick with the name his housefolk gave him, he says that he is a loyal WarriorClan cat through and through. When the Chester and the other kittypets ask about Firestar, the cat Smudge told them about, Graystripe tells them that Firestar had died many moons ago. Chester mews sympathetically, saying that Graystripe must miss him.

Monkeystar challenges Graystripe to a fight, and when he wins, the WarriorClan cats are amazed and ask him to teach them how to do that. Graystripe concedes, and stays with WarriorClan until nightfall, teaching them how to hunt and fight. When he tells them that he needs to go, Chester protests, saying that they still have a lot more to learn. But Graystripe tells them that he has to go to the Moonstone for an important mission, so the kittypets wish him farewell. However, the kittypets decide to instead follow Graystripe all the way to the Twolegplace before he notices. He asks who is there, and Monkeystar, Clawwhistle, Bigteeth, Bugeater, Fireface, and Chester all slide out into the open, shuffling their paws in embarrassment. Graystripe is annoyed at first, but lets them come with him as long as they do exactly as he tells them. Graystripe shows the kittypets how to cross the Thunderpath to Highstones, and they all roll around in the grass with laughter on the other side after dashing across. Chester excitedly asks if they can do it again, to which Graystripe replies that they will be able to do it on the way back.

After meeting Fang, the cats continue to Highstones, where Graystripe catches them a rabbit. When the group has finished eating, Bigteeth and Bugeater say that they want to go back to their housefolk. Fireface and Chester decide to go as well, leaving only Monkeystar and Clawwhistle with Fang and Graystripe. Graystripe calls after them to remember to be safe crossing the Thunderpath, and Chester acknowledges his warning with a wave of his tail. Later, Chester, along with the rest of WarriorClan, helps free a large group of kittypets trapped in a Twoleg nest with a neglectful and elderly Twoleg. Many of the escaped cats decide to join WarriorClan.
