"The time comes for prophecies to unfold and heroes to rise."
This article contains major spoilers for the recently released book, The Prophecies Begin, volume 3. Please proceed at your own discretion.
"Of course. I have made good friends in all the Clans. I've seen kits born and watched elders leave on their final journey to Silverpelt. I've made the long journey to the Clans' new home. Believe me, I wouldn't change a single day. I know it is not in your power to give me longer with my Clan, but I can't help wanting more."
— Cinderpelt to the StarClan cats in Twilight, page 3

Cinderpelt is a small[16] and sleek-furred,[17] dark[18] smoky[19] gray she-cat[18] with pale blue eyes,[20] and a twisted hind leg.[21]

Cinderpelt was a ThunderClan medicine cat who served under Bluestar's, Firestar's, and briefly Graystripe's leaderships in the forest and lake territories. She was born as Cinderkit to Lionheart and Frostfur alongside her siblings: Brackenkit, Thornkit, and Brightkit. She and her siblings were captured by ShadowClan, but they were later rescued by a ThunderClan patrol and ShadowClan's elders. She was apprenticed early as Cinderpaw with Fireheart as her mentor. However, she was caught in a trap set by Tigerclaw that was originally meant for Bluestar, causing her to be struck by a monster on the Thunderpath and to sustain a permanent leg injury that prevented her from becoming a warrior. Despite this, Cinderpaw found her place in the Clan by becoming Yellowfang's apprentice as a medicine cat. Though she blamed herself for Silverstream's death while kitting, she grew into a skilled medicine cat and earned her full name, Cinderpelt.

Cinderpelt nursed two ShadowClan warriors, Littlecloud and Whitethroat, back to health despite Fireheart's warnings and devised a cure for their sickness. She was later devastated over Yellowfang's death, but she continued to serve ThunderClan. After Firestar went on a quest, she briefly led ThunderClan alongside Graystripe. Eventually, she became a mentor to Leafpool and participated in the Great Journey to the lake where StarClan foretold her of her death, but omitted when this would happen. Cinderpelt was at odds when Leafpool left the Clan to be with Crowfeather, but she protected Sorreltail during her kitting from badgers when they attacked ThunderClan's camp, dying in the process and rendering Leafpool devastated. She was given a second chance at life and was reborn as Cinderkit, her brother Brackenfur's kit. After Cinderpelt's spirit separated from Cinderheart's, she ascended to StarClan and gave Brambleclaw one of his nine lives.

The Prophecies Begin[]

"It's just sometimes I dream about being in the forest, hunting with Brackenpaw, and then I wake up and the pain in my leg reminds me that I'll never hunt again. It feels too much to bear. I have to pretend that maybe, one day, I'll be able to hunt."
―Cinderpaw to Fireheart Fire and Ice, page 234
Cinderkit is born to Frostfur with her three siblings. Her littermates are kidnapped by Clawface, a ShadowClan warrior, but are rescued by a ThunderClan patrol. She is apprenticed to Fireheart at three moons old, being very energetic and eager to learn. Tigerclaw asks for Bluestar to meet him on the Thunderpath to give her a message, but the leader is unable to because she is ill. Despite Fireheart forbidding her, Cinderpaw goes to the Thunderpath and is struck by a monster, injuring her leg. Cinderpaw's leg never properly heals, thus preventing her from becoming a warrior. Cinderpaw is initially upset and feels useless, but finds her place, following the path of a medicine cat, with Yellowfang's guidance.
Cinderpaw and her mentor, Yellowfang

Cinderpaw and her mentor, Yellowfang

Graystripe's mate, Silverstream, begins kitting at Sunningrocks, but complications arise, and Fireheart finds Cinderpaw to help. Despite Cinderpaw's best efforts to save her, Silverstream loses too much blood and dies, and the medicine cat apprentice blames herself for the queen's death. After Tigerclaw betrays ThunderClan and is exiled, Cinderpaw finds a rotting magpie on the fresh-kill pile and believes it to be a sign from StarClan that Bluestar's leadership is deteriorating. She is later given her full medicine cat name, Cinderpelt. When two sick ShadowClan warriors, Littlecloud and Whitethroat, come to ThunderClan for help due to their Clan dying from Carrionplace disease, they are rejected by Bluestar, Fireheart, and Yellowfang. However, Cinderpelt goes behind her leader's back by healing the two in secret. Fireheart finds out, but does not reveal it to anyone, not even Yellowfang. When a fire breaks out on ThunderClan territory, Yellowfang dies trying to aid their trapped Clanmates. Cinderpelt grieves for her lost mentor and is nervous about being the Clan's only medicine cat, but grows more confident in her role as time passes.
She has a dream of ferocious dogs panting "Pack pack, kill kill" and is worried it is a sign from StarClan of danger to come. Her sister, Brightpaw, is brought back to camp after being mauled by a pack of dogs, and Cinderpelt saves her. She tags along with Fireheart as he goes to receive his nine lives from StarClan after Bluestar loses her last life. She later goes on to save Sorrelkit after Darkstripe feeds her deathberries. Cinderpelt prepares to heal the wounded, with the help of Fernpaw, as the battle with BloodClan draws near.

The New Prophecy[]

"We cannot change our destiny. We just have to have the courage to know what it is, and accept it."
―Cinderpelt to Leafpool Twilight, page 309
Cinderpelt is now mentoring Firestar and Sandstorm's daughter, Leafpaw. While they are out collecting herbs, Cinderpelt sees an omen of a tiger leaping into flames and believes it might mean Brambleclaw and Squirrelpaw may be a danger to the Clan; however, this was later proven to be false, as Squirrelpaw and Brambleclaw came together to help save the Clan. ThunderClan abandons their camp as Twolegs draw too close, and she travels with the Clans on the Great Journey. Once they reach the lake territories, Cinderpelt and the other medicine cats discuss how they will communicate with StarClan, since the Moonstone is far behind them. Leafpaw discovers the Moonpool, and Cinderpelt gives her apprentice her full name, Leafpool, in honor of discovering the Moonpool.
StarClan gives Cinderpelt the troubling news that she will die sometime soon, and she accepts this. She confronts Leafpool about her relationship with Crowfeather, a WindClan warrior, which escalates into an argument. Leafpool leaves Cinderpelt and ThunderClan behind and runs off with Crowfeather. During Sorreltail's kitting, badgers attack ThunderClan's camp, and Cinderpelt defends her Clanmates to the best of her abilities, but is fatally wounded. Leafpool returns just before she dies, and Cinderpelt tells that her she knows the Clan will be well cared for. Shortly after, Leafpool learns that Cinderpelt has been reborn as one of Sorreltail's kits, Cinderkit, to have a second chance to live the life of a warrior.

Omen of the Stars[]

"I will never forget who I was before. Thank you for being my first life."
―Cinderheart to Cinderpelt The Forgotten Warrior, chapter 17
After seeing Cinderpelt's memories in a dream, Cinderheart realizes the medicine cat was reborn as her. She regains all of Cinderpelt's knowledge of healing and memories, suffering from an identity crisis, and no longer knows who she is supposed to be. Cinderheart ultimately decides to be a warrior and becomes mates with Lionblaze, allowing Cinderpelt's spirit to separate from her. Cinderpelt thanks her before joining StarClan.

"But you didn't kill [Snake]. You chose mercy, for Snake and for Gremlin. And, in the end, for Fury. It was the right choice. BloodClan is gone, and the forest is peaceful again. Graystripe, you're becoming wise enough to be a Clan leader."
―Cinderpelt reassuring Graystripe over his worries Graystripe's Vow, page 362
In Graystripe's Vow, Cinderpelt helps lead ThunderClan with Graystripe while Firestar and Sandstorm embark on a journey to rebuild SkyClan, with only her and Graystripe knowing of their departure. While Graystripe struggles leading the Clan, Cinderpelt supports him through all of his decisions, and she defends him whilst their Clanmates doubt his leadership and Firestar's short-noticed departure. Cinderpelt assists ThunderClan and Graystripe preparing for their next battle against BloodClan. She goes to the Moonstone when Graystripe is doubting himself on what to do with Gremlin, a BloodClan queen, and she tells Graystripe to follow his instincts after StarClan gives her a message for Graystripe regarding the future battle. After the battle, Cinderpelt helps heal Fury's wound and worries over the heavily pregnant Gremlin, but wants to make sure her unborn kits are safe. When Graystripe is worrying that he almost killed Snake, Cinderpelt reassures him that he showed mercy towards Snake, Fury, and Gremlin, and tells him he made the right choice, adding that Graystripe is becoming wise enough to be a Clan leader.

Lives granted[]

Family[]

Cinderpelt's parents are Lionheart and Frostfur. Her siblings are Brackenfur, Brightheart, and Thornclaw. For more of Cinderpelt's family, click here!

Personality and traits[]

As a young apprentice, Cinderpaw is enthusiastic, energetic, headstrong, and sometimes distracted, though she is not lacking in good will.[23][24][25] She is mischievous, quick-witted, curious, cheeky, and perceptive.[26][27] Despite her accident, she remains full of vitality, warm, and true to herself.[28] Although she is full of regret at the thought of never being able to become a warrior, she does not let it get her down and assists Yellowfang in helping her Clan,[29][30][31][32][33] even becoming her apprentice officially.[34][35] Determined to become the best cat medicine possible for the benefit of her Clanmates,[36] she will doubt her abilities and her new vocation when she fails to save Silverstream.[37][38] Her compassion extends beyond her territory, as she does not hesitate to help any cat in need.[39][40] Cinderpelt becomes more assertive, not hesitating to speak her mind frankly and directly; she is a good listener when people confide in her.[41][42][43][44][45][46] As she grows older, she becomes wiser, more measured, and sometimes assertive like her former mentor Yellowfang.[47][48][49][50]

Relationships[]

Firestar[]

«Mouse-brain. When you make mistakes—not if, Fireheart, when—I'll tell you about them, believe me. And I'll still be your friend, no matter what. No cat that ever lived was perfect all the time. Bluestar wasn't! The trick is to learn from your mistakes, and have the courage to be true to your heart. You'll be fine, Fireheart.»
—Cinderpelt reassuring Fireheart before he receives his nine lives The Darkest Hour, chapter 3
As a young warrior, Fireheart takes in Cinderkit and the rest of her litter when they are kidnapped by Clawface.[51] He later becomes her mentor; sometimes overwhelmed, sometimes excited by Cinderpaw's boundless energy,[23][24][25] Fireheart is devastated by the young apprentice's accident.[52][53] He feels guilty for a long time for not having taken better care of her.[54] Although Cinderpaw can no longer become a warrior, she and Fireheart remain close.[32] They support and comfort each other during their respective sorrows and difficulties,[37] confide in each other on all subjects, to the point that they consider themselves best friends.[35][38][45][55] Although their relationship becomes more formal with age, time, and their respective responsibilities, Firestar always feels a special fondness and respect for Cinderpelt.[49][50]
Despite the romantic feelings Cinderpelt eventually developed towards Firestar,[56] she never got in the way of his love life, even prompting him to notice Sandstorm,[41] although tensions have arisen between the two she-cats.[57]

Yellowfang[]

Cinderpaw: "I am just a burden, aren't I?"
Yellowfang: "Who's a burden? Are you upsetting my helper? I don't know how I would have coped today if it hadn't been for this one. I even had her mixing herbs this evening! I think I might keep her with me awhile longer. She's becoming more useful every day. Besides, I'm getting used to her company."
Cinderpaw: "Only because you're deaf enough to put up with my chattering! Well, that's what she keeps telling me, anyway."
—Cinderpaw and Yellowfang bicker in front of Fireheart Fire and Ice, chapter 27
Following Cinderpaw's accident, she spends a lot of time with Yellowfang, who is trying to heal her paw.[16][28] The medicine cat takes a liking to her patient and teaches her what certain plants are used for,[30] until she offers to take her as her apprentice.[34] The two she-cats are very close: Cinderpelt is quick to respond to Yellowfang's sometimes gruff temperament, and the old cat always finds the right words to comfort her student.[58][59] Cinderpelt is devastated by the death of her former mentor,[60] missing her as much teaching and wisdom than her mere presence.[61] She mentions Yellowfang to her own apprentice Leafpaw,[62] and Firestar notices that Cinderpelt is becoming more and more like Yellowfang as she ages.[50]

Leafpool[]

Feathertail: "You must be proud to be her apprentice."
Leafpaw: "Very proud. But she knows so much, sometimes I wonder if I'll ever learn it all!"
—Feathertail and Leafpaw talk about Cinderpelt during a Gathering Midnight, chapter 3
Leafpaw is proud to be Cinderpelt's apprentice.[48] The two she-cats are close: Leafpaw is a diligent and willing student, while Cinderpelt is protective and warm toward her.[49][62] Leafpaw is caring toward her mentor, taking into consideration her injured paw and limp;[63][64][65] while Cinderpelt encourages her to have confidence in herself and her abilities.[66]
Once the Clans have settled around the lake, Cinderpelt warns Leafpaw against developing romantic feelings for Crowfeather, which outrages the apprentice, who is still in denial.[67] When Cinderpelt catches Leafpool with the WindClan warrior, she is initially worried and wants to bring her back to her senses; but her former apprentice rebels and becomes angry, to the point of claiming that she cannot understand her since she has never been in love and has never wanted anything else in her life. Cinderpelt then gets very angry and leaps at Leafpool, who runs away.[68] Cinderpelt feels terribly guilty about it.[69][70] Leafpool eventually returns to ThunderClan, just in time to say goodbye to Cinderpelt, who has been mortally wounded by a badger. Leafpool laments at her bedside, bitterly regretting abandoning her, but Cinderpelt tells her there is nothing to forgive and that she is a wonderful medicine cat.[71] Leafpool will then mourn her mentor, promising never to leave their Clan again.[72]

Quotes[]

Cinderpaw: "Congratulations, Brackenfur!"
Brackenfur: "You should have been with me."
Cinderpaw: "No, I’m fine as I am. You’ll have to be a warrior for both of us. And I’ll have to settle for being the greatest medicine cat this forest has ever seen!"
—Cinderpaw congratulates her brother Brackenfur after he becomes a warrior Forest of Secrets, chapter 21

"You’ve got a tongue, haven’t you? Lick, you useless lump of fur. Do you want the kit to die?"
―Cinderpaw scolds Tigerclaw during Silverstream's birth Forest of Secrets, chapter 21

"The whole Clan will be my kits. Even the warriors. Yellowfang says they have about as much sense as newborns sometimes! But you’ll always be my best friend, Fireheart. I’ll never forget you were my first mentor."
―Cinderpaw reassures Fireheart before leaving for the Moonstone Forest of Secrets, chapter 26

"She was growing up, Fireheart thought, with an odd feeling of regret. His enthusiastic, sometimes scatterbrained apprentice was maturing into a cat of great inner strength and power. He knew he should rejoice in the path StarClan had chosen for her, but part of him wished that they could still go out together on the hunting trail. (...) Fireheart knew that in some ways, Cinderpaw was going away forever. When she returned, she would have new powers and responsibilities, given to her not by a Clan leader, but by StarClan. (...) Fireheart watched her go, his heart heavy. He knew his friend was at the beginning of a new and happier life, but all the same he could not stifle a pang of bittersweet regret for the life that could have been hers."
―Fireheart about Cinderpaw Forest of Secrets, chapter 26

Cinderpelt: "Because while you're dreaming about [Spottedleaf], there's another cat—a living one—right under your nose whom you should be thinking about instead."
Fireheart: "What are you talking about?"
Cinderpelt: "Haven't you noticed?"
Fireheart: "Noticed what?"
Cinderpelt: "Fireheart, every cat in the Clan can see that Sandstorm is very, very fond of you!"
—Cinderpelt telling Fireheart about Sandstorm's fondness towards him Rising Storm, page 155

"Why can't you let her rest in StarClan? I know she was special to you, but remember what Yellowfang said to me when I couldn't stop thinking about Silverstream: Put your energy into today. Stop worrying about the past."
―Cinderpelt to Fireheart about Spottedleaf Rising Storm, page 154

"I can tell how much this means to you. And if it is really your destiny, then you must go wherever your paws lead you. But be careful- StarClan may not be able to watch over you. Our warrior ancestors do not walk in all skies."
―Cinderpelt to Firestar Firestar's Quest, page 110

Cinderpelt: "It's not just about rules. Your sympathy for other Clans and your willingness to see that sometimes rules have to be ignored will make you a great medicine cat in the end."
Leafpaw: "Really?"
Cinderpelt: "Really. 'Medicine cat' means nothing on it's own, without an understanding of what should be done - which isn't always what you first think. Remember what I've always told you about Yellowfang? She never followed the rules, but she was one of the best medicine cats the forest has ever seen."
—Cinderpelt to Leafpaw about being a medicine cat Moonrise, page 107

Cinderpelt: "So do I. But I can pass on to you what she taught me. To truly be a medicine cat lies in a cat's heart, and all its five senses. You must be braver than warriors, wiser than a Clan leader, humbler than the tiniest kit, more willing to learn than any apprentice..."
Leafpaw: "I'm not sure I can be all of that..."
Cinderpelt: "Well, I am sure. For we do not achieve this by ourselves, but by the strength of StarClan within us."
—Cinderpelt to Leafpaw Moonrise, page 108

Cinderpelt: "I know they spoke to me, but I couldn't tell what they were saying. It was as if their voices were drowned by the roaring wind."
Leafpaw: "You couldn't make out anything?"
Cinderpelt: "Nothing. But they were there."
—Cinderpelt to Leafpaw about StarClan when she was at the Moonstone, before The Great Journey Dawn, pages 259-260

"Don't grieve, Bluestar. I know my Clan will be well cared for after I am gone."
―Cinderpelt to Bluestar in StarClan Twilight, page 3

Cinderpelt: "Of course you have. But a medicine cat has to control those feelings for the good of the Clan. The path we follow has its own rewards. I've never felt cheated by the destiny StarClan sent me."
Leafpool: "You can't possibly understand! You've never been in love! It's easy for you. You never wanted anything else."
Cinderpelt: "How do you know what I want? How do you know what hopes I gave up to follow the path StarClan laid out for me?"
—Cinderpelt's fury towards Leafpool Twilight, pages 246-247

"We cannot change our destiny. We just have to have the courage to know what it is, and accept it. StarClan is waiting for me. Good-bye, Leafpool."
―Cinderpelt to Leafpool as she dies Twilight, page 309

"My head is so full of memories! I feel as though there are two lives inside of me, not one. How can it be my choice to make? Doesn't Cinderpelt have a choice? I can't make her be a warrior! She was a medicine cat!"
―Cinderheart to Lionblaze The Last Hope, page 234

Cinderpelt: "I loved Firestar, but I chose my duty over the hope that he would love me, and it was the right choice. ThunderClan needs you, Alderheart, just as it needed me. For the future to remain unclouded, medicine cats must choose their duty to their Clan over anything else."
Alderheart: "I understand, but it's hard."
Cinderpelt: "True, but the rewards are great. And now... now that the five Clans are finally united once more, there will be new challenges. The sky has cleared at last, but the Clans must come together to make the forest grow."
—Cinderpelt and Alderheart River of Fire, page 281
