"He's super old. That's why we come around to check on him. He tells us stories, and we keep him entertained by telling him all about our fierce warrior adventures, and make sure he's safe. Isn't that right, Barley?" |

Graystripe's Vow[]
- Clawwhistle: "Yeah, it was great! I never thought we'd ever meet a real warrior cat."
- Bugeater: "It's been so exciting!"
- Graystripe's Vow, page 214
- Clawwhistle is a member of WarriorClan, a group of kittypets that pretend to be warriors. During his travels to the Moonstone, WarriorClan ambushes Graystripe and Monkeystar introduces the group. Clawwhistle introduces himself to Graystripe, but Graystripe gives him a puzzled look, so Clawwhistle explains that he is named after the sound a claw makes when it flies through the air. Graystripe awkwardly tells him that it is a good name.
- After Graystripe tells the WarriorClan cats that he used to be friends with Firestar, Clawwhistle asks him if the flame-colored leader is with him, but Graystripe sadly replies that he died saving his Clan. After Monkeystar takes on Graystripe and Graystripe wins, Clawwhistle is one of the cats who wants to help him reach Highstones. But he declines, saying he has to do it alone. But despite his reluctance to bring them along, Clawwhistle and the other WarriorClan cats follow Graystripe to the Moonstone, only to find it shattered. Monkeystar tells Graystripe that she knows an old cat not far from there who loves to tell stories and Clawwhistle agrees, adding that the old cat knows about the Clan cats as well. Graystripe asks if they are talking about Barley, Monkeystar and Clawwhistle exchange a glance, replying yes and asking how he knew. Graystripe says that they used to be friends, and asks the WarriorClan cats to take him to Barley. They set off, Clawwhistle following Monkeystar, away from Mothermouth.
- When the cats find Barley sleeping in the barn, he and Monkeystar excitedly crouch behind Graystripe. Graystripe greets Barley as Clawwhistle announces that he is super old, and that the kittypets have to come check on him, and make sure he is safe. He starts bouncing around in excitement, and gives a massive leap up to one of the bales in the barn, and Barley is amused. When the old cat asks what he would do without WarriorClan watching over him, Monkeystar orders Clawwhistle to get out from inside the bale of dried grass, and helps extract the orange tom from it. Graystripe then realizes Clawwhistle was right about Barley's age, and that the latter's black-and-white pelt was run through with gray and his blue eyes were clouded. When a female Twoleg enters the barn, Monkeystar and Clawwhistle, who were chasing each other around the barn, flatten themselves to the ground.
- Later, when Graystripe suggests that the kittypets practice hunting moves, the orange tom notes that hunting in the barn is easy, and that one would just have to listen. When Monkeystar spots a mouse, she tries to catch it, but it dashes right under Clawwhistle's nose and he slaps a paw down on it, declaring that he caught the mouse. But Monkeystar protests that it was hers, so Graystripe ends the argument before the two kittypets started clawing each other, and suggests that they both bring it to Barley. Monkeystar and Clawwhistle then exchange glances and proceed to do so. Afterward the two settle down with the other WarriorClan cats and feast on the prey. Clawwhistle exclaims that the others are missing out as the five cats eat. Later, Monkeystar and Clawwhistle become exhausted from the long trek to Highstones, and fall asleep with their tails curled over their noses.
- The next day Monkeystar and Clawwhistle chase each other in grass heaps when they pause to listen to Graystripe talk with Fang about Gremlin. After their long discussion, Graystripe notices the two WarriorClan kittypets who were chasing each around were now asleep, their tails twined together. Later on when Barley offers for the group to try his kittypet food, Clawwhistle mutters enviously that the food is better then what their housefolk give them, and Graystripe is amused by this. When Graystripe and Barley bid each other good-bye, Monkeystar and Clawwhistle come bounding up asking if they could come with him. Graystripe says yes, but only as far as their home, adding it was too dangerous for them to handle. The two cats protest, and Clawwhistle insists they are brave enough, but Graystripe replies that they have got a lot more to learn. Monkeystar and Clawwhistle exchange another glance as Monkeystar tells Graystripe that he is not being fair to them. The orange tom begs to come along, so he finally gives in. All three cats are very excited by this.
- When Graystripe is trapped in the Twoleg den, Clawwhistle is part of the rescue patrol, trying to find a way into the den, when a cat exclaims for Clawwhistle to get his tail out of the cat's ear. After the cats are rescued, him and Monkeystar offer to guard the camp where all the kittypets were hiding, and the two settle down side by side, and later fall asleep with the other cats. As Graystripe bids the WarriorClan cats good-bye before returning home, Monkeystar tells the cats that she and Clawwhistle went with Graystripe to visit Barley.
- Clawwhistle and Lily watch Bugeater attempt to pounce on Fang. He is part of a patrol led by Monkeystar to find Petunia, saying that he is reminded of the adventure with Graystripe. When hostile kittypets accuse them of trespassing, Clawwhistle grapples with a gray kittypet with darker patches. After the skirmish, Monkeystar spots a scratch on Clawwhistle's nose, but he replies that he is okay. Clawwhistle, Monkeystar, Lily, and Bugeater find Petunia near her former elderly Twoleg's den, waiting for her Twoleg to return. After Lily convinces Petunia they have to move on, Monkeystar leads them to the Moonstone and Clawwhistle, Lily and Bugeater doze outside the entrance. When Petunia returns after speaking with Gremlin's spirit, the group returns to camp.
