Chapter description[]
- Crookedjaw's patrol is horrified that their Clanmates lost against ThunderClan. The twisted-jaw warrior explains to the Clan how Twolegs captured Willowbreeze, though Hailstar insists they'll rescue her in the morning after they've recovered from their wounds. Fallowtail challenges her leader's decision and accuses him of not caring about Willowbreeze since she's half-Clan, though Timberfur gently nudges the frantic mother away. Crookedjaw promises Fallowtail and Graypool that he'll rescue Willowbreeze later that night, though he wonders why Mapleshade betrayed RiverClan. As the day drags on to nightfall, Crookedjaw's prepared to slip out of camp when Brambleberry stops him while on her way to the Moonstone for the half-moon meeting. She confronts that she knows what he's planning on doing but acknowledges it's a part of his destiny. Crookedjaw questions what she knows about his destiny, but she replies vaguely that she hopes StarClan is right before darting off.
- Crookedjaw briefly wonders if he's doing the right thing before reaffirming that he cannot abandon Willowbreeze. He heads for the meadow and the Twoleg pelt-dens. However, he quickly realizes he's being followed; Graypool appears from the shadows, wanting to help him rescue her sister. Crookedjaw's at first annoyed, but he quickly lets her join him. The two RiverClan warriors stalk between the pelt-dens rattling in the wind, scenting for Willowbreeze. Graypool detects her scent from one of the dens, and the two quietly sneak inside to find her. They hide behind some bright pelts and quickly spot Willowbreeze trapped in a nest while two Twolegs play with her. When Crookedjaw and Graypool are narrowly caught, they hide back outside until the Twolegs fall asleep. Once the pelt-den grows dark and quiet, the two warriors slink back inside and reunite with Willowbreeze. Working together, they manage to free her from the trap just as the Twolegs wake up in a panic. The three warriors then dart out of the den and away from the meadow as the Twolegs turn on their lights and yowl angrily.
