"I have chosen to help you. No one else. Just you. Never forget that the Clan is greater than its cats. Even if you sacrifice every cat who ever loved you, it will be no more than shedding raindrops from your fur because, even if they go, the Clan will still be there and relying on you."

Chapter description[]

Crookedjaw halts, detecting a hiss from the brush somewhere. He spots Mapleshade hiding in the nearby sedge, and he encourages for Willowbreeze and Graypool to continue to camp without him. Now alone, the twisted-jaw warrior angrily asks Mapleshade what she wants, but she attacks him. Crookedjaw is caught off guard before heaving her away. Mapleshade calls him a mouse-brain, and the RiverClan tom can't believe what he's hearing, before accusing her of betraying him to the Twolegs while he was rescuing Willowbreeze. Mapleshade berates him for his growing affection towards Willowbreeze, accusing him of failing to keep his promise to her.
Mapleshade ridicules that he should be ashamed for deserting the Clan to save her, despite Hailstar's orders, and cats who betray their Clans should be exiled. With that, the spirit claws at Crookedjaw, but he knocks her away. Mapleshade is pinned down, and Crookedjaw digs his claws into her flesh, telling her that no StarClan cat will betray their Clanmates. Mapleshade goes limp, and the tabby recoils, afraid that he hurt her. Groaning with the effort, Mapleshade recalls how he was born in a storm and is destined for greatness, but he must promise to place the Clan above anything else. Crookedjaw promises that he will, but Mapleshade goes on to specify that he'll have to make sacrifices, including losing his loved ones. Crookedjaw is conflicted by her words, but Mapleshade soon disappears. As Crookedjaw returns to camp, he firmly believes he'll be the greatest leader ever since he was chosen by StarClan and had saved Willowbreeze.
