"Nothing's for certain. The power is within you to be a fine warrior. Every cat knows you're going to be great, just from watching you. The stars don't have to decide everything for us." |

Chapter description[]
- While searching for Mapleshade in their mysterious dark forest, Crookedjaw notices another ragged spirit training an apprentice. Crookedjaw recognizes the living tom as Thistleclaw, a warrior from ThunderClan. Thistleclaw goads how Sunstar will soon name him deputy, and his mentor Shredtail prods Thistleclaw about Bluefur's equal chances for deputyship and the death of her sister and Thistleclaw's mate, Snowfur. The spiky-furred warrior snarls that Bluefur should've died on the Thunderpath instead of Snowfur and that their young son, Whitekit, demonstrates little drive for battle. As the pair resume their fighting, Crookedjaw is caught off guard by the ferocity of their training session, noting that even Mapleshade is never that brutal with him.
- Crookedjaw wakes up to Willowbreeze gently prodding him. Disappointed he couldn't find his spirit mentor, Crookedjaw continues on with the day's duties; he leads a hunting patrol with Mudfur, Petaldust, and Oakheart. After a successful fishing session, Oakheart notes that ThunderClan hasn't marked their borders yet this morning, and Crookedjaw idly responds that they must be mourning Snowfur's death. His Clanmates quickly question how he knew about her vigil, and the twisted-jaw warrior lies that heard a border patrol talk about it the other day, not wanting to reveal his secret training sessions with Mapleshade. Oakheart laments for Bluefur's loss, and Crookedjaw also reflects about the heartbreaking pain of losing a littermate.
- At the Gathering, Hailstar asks for Oakheart to inform the other Clans about recent Twoleg developments. The dark brown warrior decides to jump on the Greak Rock to share his news, and Crookedjaw defends his brother from an angry ShadowClan warrior. While he's pleased for his brother's opportunity to address all four Clans, Crookedjaw is slightly jealous, but knows he's the one with the greater destiny. Regardless, Crookedjaw quickly grows irksome of the other warriors clamoring over Oakheart during the walk home. Brambleberry walks with him and comments that he has a great destiny ahead of him. Crookedjaw asks if she's received an omen, but the medicine cat just vaguely remarks that StarClan doesn't dictate everything, leaving the young warrior wondering why he's being trained by a StarClan warrior.
