Chapter description[]

At the Gathering, Adderfang goads Crookedjaw why he was named deputy, but the RiverClan's tom is too busy searching for his brother Oakheart in the crowd from his position underneath the Great Rock. With Shellheart confined to the elders' den with swelling in his belly and Willowbreeze injured her paw while fishing earlier, only Oakheart is able to witness Crookedjaw's special moment. Hailstar announces to the Clans that Crookedjaw is his newest deputy, and Crookedjaw is relieved when the other Clans cheer his name. However, he spots Thistleclaw eyeing him in the crowd, and the tabby deputy wonders if ThunderClan tom assumes they are now allies.
After the Gathering ends, Crookedjaw searches the crowd for his brother and passes by several warriors congratulating him. He finally finds his brother near the edge of the clearing looking distracted. Crookedjaw asks if he's jealous that he's deputy, but Oakheart sharply insists that he's proud of his littermate. While Crookedjaw feels relieved, Oakheart notices their Clanmates are leaving, and he promises to catch up later. On their way back to camp, Crookedjaw asks Mudfur what he thought about the other medicine cats, though Mudfur is called away to help Beetlenose with his hiccups. Crookedjaw is left walking alongside Brambleberry and the silence is tense between them. Now that he knows Mapleshade is from the Dark Forest, Crookedjaw longs to speak to her about her warning from StarClan, but he instead asks her about Shellheart's condition. Brambleberry soberly reveals that his condition is fatal.
When they arrive back at camp, Crookedjaw immediately visits Shellheart in the elders' den. He tells his father about the Gathering, but notices his pelt is frail and cold. Shellheart beams with pride and insists Rainflower would've been proud too, but Crookedjaw doesn't believe that for a heartbeat. His father apologizes for Rainflower's behavior when she was still alive, but he knows she will recognize her faults now that she's in StarClan.
