"Was he worrying for no reason? Perhaps Oakheart didn't think talking to Bluefur was important enough to mention. Any loyal warrior would have stopped to question the intruder. Besides, he wouldn't keep secrets from me, would he? Crookedjaw padded to a flat gray rock and lay down to wait for Oakheart's return. He wasn't the only cat who was loyal to his Clanmates. There was no way his brother would betray RiverClan."

Chapter description[]

A moon later, Shellheart dies from his illness, and Crookedjaw still grieves his father's death even two moons later. Willowbreeze finds him sulking by Sunningrocks during a light drizzle and she comforts him. Ottersplash urgently swims across the river with news of ThunderClan swiftly approaching the camp. The three cats swiftly return to camp, where RiverClan is anxiously anticipating the enemy Clan's unexpected arrival. Crookedjaw leads a patrol to confront them before they arrive in camp. Before he leaves, Hailstar orders guards for the nursery in case ThunderClan attacks, and Crookedjaw asks Echomist to inform Oakheart, who is fishing, what's going on.
The RiverClan deputy leads Ottersplash and Rippleclaw to meet the ThunderClan patrol, and they quickly encounter Sunstar with Bluefur, Whitestorm, Thrushpelt, and Lionheart. ThunderClan's leader asks to speak with Hailstar, and while Crookedjaw is initially suspicious, he leads them to RiverClan's camp once he doesn't detect a second patrol nearby. RiverClan's camp is well guarded, and Crookedjaw fetches Hailstar from his den. He informs his leader about the small patrol before they confront Sunstar. Sunstar comes with news for RiverClan: Sunningrocks is theirs now, and any RiverClan cats who trespass there tomorrow will be challenged. Sunstar's claim is instantly disputed by Hailstar who insists RiverClan will fight to keep the rocks. The ginger tabby tom warns that RiverClan has no hunting use for Sunningrocks so it seems counterintuitive to fight for them. The ThunderClan patrol leaves right after, and Hailstar orders Ottersplash and Timberfur to escort them.
RiverClan's youngest warriorsSedgecreek, Loudbelly, Reedtail, Frogleap, Sunfish, Skyheart, and Leopardfur—are eager to participate in their first battle, but Hailstar decides to discuss it with Crookedjaw first in his den. While his deputy insists on fighting to keep Sunningrocks, Hailstar believes that RiverClan has no use for the prey there during leaf-bare, as Sunstar had correctly assumed. Crookedjaw relents, though he feels guilty when Hailstar praises StarClan for choosing him to be deputy. The RiverClan leader requests for Crookedjaw to make the announcement to the Clan that they will let ThunderClan keep Sunningrocks until newleaf, though his decision is unpopular. When the younger warriors propose fighting regardless, Crookedjaw threatens to shred them, though he later admits that the river will provide enough prey for them in the meanwhile.
As the Clan meeting ends, Ottersplash confides with Crookedjaw that she had seen Oakheart speaking with Bluefur alone after ThunderClan left. Crookedjaw postulates that maybe Oakheart was asking what she was doing in their territory, though he doesn't fully believe that himself. The next day, Crookedjaw fishes with Oakheart. He asks if he saw the ThunderClan patrol the other day, and Oakheart admits he saw Timberfur and Ottersplash escorting them away, though he doesn't mention speaking with Bluefur when Crookedjaw presses. Oakheart pushes aside his brother's queries and returns to fishing. Crookedjaw wonders if he's worrying too much as he knows his brother would never betray RiverClan.
