"Are you stupid or blind or both? Why do you think your brother spends all day hunting for them? Watching them as if they're his next meal? He's more attentive than most fathers—but then he is raising them without their true mother. [...] Not in RiverClan. Look across the river, you fool!" |

Chapter description[]
- Leaf-bare has arrived, and RiverClan is struggling with scarce prey. While hunting with Loudbelly and Piketooth, Crookedstar recalls how Graypool's two kits, Splashkit and Morningkit, had recently died. Graypool still heavily grieves the loss of her kits, and she frequently yowls her grief by the river. When Loudbelly misses a squirrel, Crookedstar wishes Oakheart was with them, but his brother was still recovering after a battle with Thistleclaw three moons ago. The RiverClan leader dreads the idea of the ThunderClan warrior becoming deputy with rumors of Tawnyspots' illness. After Piketooth successfully catches a mouse, the hunting patrol returns to camp with their slim catch.
- Crookedstar spots Willowbreeze carrying feathers to the nursery and stumbles upon a miraculous sight: Graypool with two strange kits. The gray queen explains how she found them alone by the border and plans to raise them as her own. Willowbreeze insists it's a blessing from StarClan, but Crookedstar worries their mother might come looking for them. Oakheart is excited about the arrival of the new kits and presses Crookedstar for his opinion. When Crookedstar brings up that they don't necessarily belong to RiverClan, Oakheart strongly insists that the kits will die back in the cold. He also advocates to keep watch where Graypool had found them incase their mother returns. Crookedstar relents since the Clan needs new kits after the deaths of Brightsky's and Graypool's litters, much to Oakheart's visible relief.
- A moon later, Stonekit and Mistykit play with Willowbreeze, and the gray tabby she-cat comments to her mate that the two kits are lucky to have Clanborn hunting skills. Oakheart arrives with a fresh carp for the kits to try, but Stonekit and Mistykit complain about the fishy taste. Sedgecreek bursts into camp about a nearby fox scent, and Crookedstar volunteers to check on it. Instead of a fox, Crookedstar encounters Mapleshade, and the Dark Forest she-cat taunts Crookedstar for failing to realize Mistykit and Stonekit's true heritage. The RiverClan leader is shocked by this revelation, and he questions Oakheart alone about it, asking his brother if Stonekit and Mistykit are his kits with Bluefur, a ThunderClan warrior. Oakheart admits that it is true and that Bluefur gave her kits up so Thistleclaw wouldn't be deputy. Crookedstar agrees to let the kits stay since they are kin and briefly reflects about the weight of his own burdens and secrets.

- Crookedstar mentions that Softwing's kits have died,[9] but they appear alive in the next chapter.[12]
- Mapleshade is mistakenly described as orange-and-white.[6]
