Chapter description[]
- A warm greenleaf has gifted RiverClan with ample prey. RiverClan's youngest warriors—Stonefur, Mistyfoot, and Mallowtail—reflect how Stonefur chased off a Twoleg, though his mother Graypool wishes he were more careful. Other warriors chime in on their boasting when Willowbreeze asks to speak with Crookedstar. When they are out of camp, Willowbreeze reveals she's expecting his kits in three moons. Crookedstar is ecstatic and quickly fusses over her well-being. Though the good news quickly urges him to tell his brother and Clanmates, but he asks for permission first. When Willowbreeze nods in agreement, Crookedstar rushes into camp proclaiming that Willowbreeze is expecting. The Clan quickly congratulates Crookedstar and Willowbreeze. The RiverClan leader asks Timberfur to take Willowbreeze off all patrols, but Willowbreeze quickly protests. Brambleberry insists she can still participate in patrols for a little while longer and that their Clan leader is merely fussing. After he escorts Willowbreeze to their den in the roots of a willow tree, Crookedstar reflects about Hailstar's and Rainflower's deaths. He yowls into the night for Mapleshade to stay away from his mate and their kits.
- Moons later, Crookedstar returns from a border patrol to find Willowbreeze dragging reeds slow close to kitting. The two bicker when Brambleberry insists it is natural Willowbreeze wishes to fix her next so close to kitting. However, Willowbreeze suddenly coughs, prompting Brambleberry to give her herbs out of an overabundance of caution. The gray tabby queen's kitting then starts, and Brambleberry urges Crookedstar to fetch Mudfur and Fallowtail. While Willowbreeze kits, Crookedstar paces anxiously in the camp clearing, reflecting on how Brightsky got sick and then died after her own kitting. Oakheart attempts to soothe his brother's worries by reminding him how brave and tough Willowbreeze is. By sunhigh, Willowbreeze has given birth to three she-kits. Brambleberry cautions that Willowbreeze is exhausted but allows Crookedstar to briefly visit. He gazes warmly at his three daughters and comforts Willowbreeze before being ushered out the nursery. Crookedstar thanks StarClan for forgiving him and blessing him with his daughters.
- The next morning, Crookedstar catches a carp for Willowbreeze, but Mudfur prevents him from entering the nursery. As fear begins to set in, Crookedstar's prepared to shove Mudfur away when Brambleberry emerges from the nursery. The medicine cat explains how Willowbreeze has developed a cough and she's being kept in the nursery to prevent it from spreading, explaining how Sunfish has already moved to the elders' den. Distraught, Crookedstar yowls to Willowbreeze that he loves her and their daughters.
