Chapter description[]

Crowfeather and Kestrelflight arrive back at camp around dawn and notice a crowd of cats gathering outside Kestrelflight's den. Whitetail exclaims that Featherpaw is finally awake, much to Crowfeather's relief. Featherpaw asks to see her mentor, and Crowfeather apologizes for putting her in danger. The gray tabby apprentice insists it was her own foolishness that got her injured. As Crowfeather leaves, Emberfoot and Sedgewhisker also apologize for blaming Crowfeather for their daughter's wounds. After leaving the den, Crowfeather pulls Breezepelt aside to reveal that Nightcloud might still be alive. They agree to search again where they found her blood on ThunderClan's territory and ask Onestar for permission first.
While Onestar agrees, the WindClan leader has other priorities. He explains his plan to barricade the tunnel entrances to stop the stoats from escaping, but Crowfeather declares that his idea is mouse-brained. Crowfeather's outburst even surprises himself, but the dark-gray tom elaborates how blocking the tunnel entrances will only cause the stoats to attack ThunderClan. Onestar reasons that is why his plan is perfect. Crowfeather criticizes his leader's integrity for wanting to cause trouble with ThunderClan instead of working together to defeat the stoats. Finally having enough, Onestar temporarily banishes Crowfeather for a quarter-moon for his repeated insubordinate behavior and he may only return if he grovels for Onestar's permission. At first, Crowfeather is bewildered that no cat is willing to speak up for him, but his shock soon turns to anger. As he stalks out of camp, Crowfeather heatedly declares that he doesn't need WindClan.
