Yew tells Crowfeather he can show him, and asks if he can climb the rock. Crowfeather wasn't show, his head spinning, but Yew was already ahead of him. He gritted his teeth and followed. There were lots of rock crevices, so Crowfeather could wedge his claws in, which helped him haul himself to the top. Yew helped him, grabbing his scruff, pulling him up onto the rock. He points with his tail towards to Twoleg place, and Crowfeather looks. Yew said that he had being visiting his housefolk, making Crowfeather thinking he's a kittypet. He doesn't think it's true, as Yew is very tough. Yew replies that he sees his housefold every now and then, when he wants to and feels like it. He says it's warm and comfortable, but the food is disgusting and it's rather boring. When he is sick of it, he leaves and explores the forest. Yew said he met Nightcloud there, outside of the Twoleg place. Crowfeather begs to know what happened to Nightcloud, and Yew crouches down, saying she was near the Thunderpath, badly wounded. Nightcloud was ready to attack Yew, but he convinced her not to.

Chapter description

Ashfoot walks next to Crowfeather, then sits down beside him. He slumps beside her, and she demands what is he doing, as he should be helping WindClan, not roaming the snowy moor. Crowfeather says that he is in exile, as he followed her's and Feathertail’s advice to do what seems right to him, which is going against Onestar's wishes and asking Bramblestar for help with the stoats problem WindClan is suffering from. Ashfoot's whiskers twitched, and seemed embarrassed, saying that she hoped Onestar would allow ThunderClan to help them. However, she says that Crowfeather needs to be more tactful when speaking with the leader, as a good deputy will need to judge their leader's mood. Crowfeather reminds Ashfoot that he isn't Onestar's deputy, he's not even a WindClan cat anymore. His mother says that it can be put right when Crowfeather convinces Onestar to take Kestrelflight's vision seriously. Ashfoot asks her son if he remembers the second wave of water that engulfed the Clans. She says that the stoats are a trouble to WindClan, but they are only the start of a much larger and serious threat.

Crowfeather meows that yes, that is what he thought, but asks what threat could it be. Ashfoot admits that she doesn't know herself, and she's not sure if even StarClan knows the future threat, but she says that when it strikes, WindClan will need him. Crowfeather snorts that she will need to tell this to Onestar, as he seems he doesn't need him at all. But Ashfoot says Crowfeather needs to make Onestar see sense, and to stop worrying about himself, but to worry about his Clan and his loved ones. Crowfeather says that if any cat had loved him, why did they not defend him. His mother scolds him that Breezepelt does love him, and cats respect him, like Heathertail. She said that they had came after him and tried to persuade him to come back.

He doubts his mother, but didn't want to argue with her about this. Crowfeather asks how can he sort things out, as the cats told him that he was dying. He shudders at the thought of this, remembering the soft voices. Ashfoot said that he won't die, as it is not time for him to go to StarClan yet, and Crowfeather asks if he will go to Dark Forest then. The gray she cat's tail curls up, saying that he was very annoying, but no one can call him evil. Ashfoot said that the cats were trying to trick Crowfeather. The light around her started fading, and Crowfeather begs his mother not to leave. Ashfooot meows that he will see her again, and tells him to wake up.

Crowfeather wakes up but struggles with opening his eyes as snow was on his eyelids. A sharp pain pierces through him, like a rock was jabbing him. Crowfeather lay on his side and he hissed, trying to spring up onto his paws. However, the pain stops him, making his head hurt and he sank to the ground. He feels a smooth wall of rock behind him, and a cat tells him to stay still. The cat tells him that he is fixing his head, and Crowfeather senses herbs. He asks if the cat helping him is a medicine cat, and he says no, he is just someone that helps others. Crowfeather is even more confused by that as his headache subsided, his vision cleared. The cat helping him has a large tabby tom with a white chest and paws and amber eyes. He looked focused on squeezing the juice from the herbs. Crowfeather asks who he is, as he is not a Clan cat, and he says that he is one of the lunatics living in the forest, and that he is not on of them. He says he prefers to be on his own, and that his name is Yew.

Crowfeather asks if it was 'you', like 'hey you'. Yew replies that of course not, but Yew, like the tree. He apologises for being rude, and introduces himself as Crowfeather. Yew tells him he has being learning about curing injured cats, and he helps out when he can. He finishes his massage on Crowfeather, and tells him to try sit up. However, his head still ached, and his muscles hurt, though he managed to get up anyways. Crowfeather asks Yew how did he find him, and he replies that it is a weird story. Yew explained that he was hunting near the edge of the forest, and saw a gray she cat. He said that she was the prettiest cat he has ever seen, and the she cat told him to follow her up. Yew says that her pelt glittered with stars, and Crowfeather realised Feathertail had saved him, feeling grateful towards her, thinking he would of died.

He thanks Yew for saving him, and he is embarrassed. Yew tells him to rest, and he will need to eat later. He goes to hunt Crowfeather some prey, then leapt off the rock. Crowfeather feels sleepy, but is afraid to fall asleep, thinking about his vision about the Dark Forest cats. He dozes off, but smells rabbbit, and sees Yew dropping prey if front of him to eat. Crowfeather tore at the fresh kill, than thanks StarClan. He also thanks Yew, and he replies it was his pleasure to help.

Yew then tells Crowfeather that he was seen another cat before, with a similar scent. Crowfeather asks what she looked like and where, starting to get excited. Yew thinks Crowfeather might know this cat, saying she was black and pretty tough. He starts to think this cat Yew has seen might be Nightcloud. Crowfeather asks Yew if she was ok, and he replies Nightcloud had a bad sound down her side. She almost attacked Yew and clawed him, before he convinced the black she cat that he had meant no harm. Yew asks if they had been friends, and Crowfeather says Nightcloud was one of his Clan members, not wanting to go on about their complex relationship, and they were worried she was dead. Yew replies she was near the Twoleg place, which confused Crowfeather, as the Twoleg place he knew of was between ShadowClan and RiverClan. He cannot think why Nightcloud would have gone there, and asks if it is across the lake. Yew says the one of the other side of the forest, which baffles Crowfeather, not knowing the other Twoleg place.

Crowfeather than asks what happened later, and Yew said he found some marigold for her wound. But Yew realised that the wound was too severe for marigold, so he told her to go inside the Twoleg place, making Crowfeather shocked, looking at him in horror. Yew's eyes sparkle, and is not worried about this, however, as he said the Twolegs will be kind to Nightcloud and take care of her, maybe even take her to the vet.
