"It's kind of hard to bond with a cat who only thinks of himself, [...] One who's so quick to think that every cat is against him. One who is so stubborn he can't even pretend he feels bad about the mistakes he's made."

Chapter Description[]

Breezepelt announces his idea to stick together in the Tunnels as the patrol heads down the hill, and that who know knows what might be in those tunnels. Crowfeather thinks his idea is foolish, and his pelt bristles with annoyance. He asks Breezepelt if he has bees in his brain, and that the patrol couldn't possibly search the entire tunnel system. Crowfeather suggest splitting into smaller groups. Breezepelt glares at him, and looks as though about to respond. Instead, the tom turns and stalks down the slope, leaving the patrol on the hill. Crowfeather feels regretful to late, realizing that breezepelt would have most likely suggested they stay together because he was scared, although Crowfeather still thinks the idea is mouse-brained. Nightcloud asks if he had to be so brutal, as though echoing Crowfeather's thoughts. Crowfeather retorts by asking Nightcloud if she is speaking to to him now, and that she barely spoke to him since the Great Battle.
Nightcloud lets out an irritated sigh, and tells Crowfeather she hadn't anything to say before, but she did now. Crowfeather rolls his eyes, and says that this should be good, and that he is listening. Nightcloud to Crowfeather that he must have seen how the other warriors are treating him. Nightcloud points out that Crowfeather needs to set an example for his clanmates, and to be nicer to Breezepelt. She continues by asking him how he thinks their clanmates will treat Breezepelt if his own father treats him like rotten prey. Nightcloud comments that sounds like an awful lot like a tom she knows. Crowfeather's pelt prickles at the comparison, and notes that kin could inherit pelt and eye color, but also personalities and characteristics.
Crowfeather reasons that neither Nightcloud or him were angry, and questions where Breezepelt had gotten his readiness for unneeded battles and anger. Crowfeather shivers, and reluctantly wonders if Breezepelt was simply just an evil cat. Nightcloud growls if Crowfeather has seen how desperately Breezepelt wants approval from his clanmates, and that must be because his father, that cat who was supposed to love him, treated his so poorly. Crowfeather looks away, not wanting Nightcloud to read his thoughts. Crowfeather questions if he can even love Breezepelt as a son, and if he ever did. Nightcloud continues, stating that she knows why Crowfeather never loved her, and why she couldn't bind them together as a family.
Nightcloud's continues by saying that isn't important now, and that Breezepelt only matters. Nightcloud continues, saying that if his father is so dismissive of him, so quick to fight, what will his clanmates think of him. Nightcloud tells Crowfeather that if that happens, and he still hasn't been accepted into the clan, it might push him away. Nightcloud's anger fades, and replaces with anxiety, and if Crowfeather could bear that. Crowfeather doesn't know how to respond, thinking that Nightcloud was right. Crowfeather hated to think that his son might leave the clan, or commit a crime that would get him punished. Crowfeather couldn't find the right words to respond to his former mate. Nightcloud sighs exasperatedly, and quickens her pace to catch up to the patrol. Crowfeather is left to bring up the rear, and he wonders if any cat will give him time to forgive Breezepelt, and if he can even forgive him.
Breezepelt is waiting at the foot of the hill, right by the nearest entrance when the patrol joins him. Harespring announces that they will stick together until the arrive in the cave with many other tunnels, and then they will split up into pairs. Crowfeather asks what will they do after that, and Harespring responds saying that it depends on what the find.
