  • As Crowfeather heads back to camp, he thinks about how Jayfeather got his grumpiness from his father.
  • He wonders if Jayfeather would have turned out any different if he had been raised by Crowfeather instead of Bramblestar, and if Breezepelt would have turned out any different if he had been raised by someone else.
  • When Crowfeather gets back to camp, Onestar confronts him about where he’s been. Crowfeather tells him he asked ThunderClan for help, and Onestar says he’ll deal with him after talking to Bramblestar.

  • Bramblestar insists that Onestar work with him. Onestar immediately gets defensive and brings up Bramblestar’s heritage. Bramblestar leaves, promising that when WindClan comes crawling back for help, he will remember this moment.
  • Onestar warns Crowfeather that if he puts one more paw out of line, they’ll be trouble.

  • Onestar sends Crowfeather to escort Kestrelflight to the half-moon meeting.
  • On the way to the Moonpool, Crowfeather asks Kestrelflight how to know if dreams mean something.
    • Kestrelflight says it’s a feeling medicine cats have, but sometimes warriors can have it too. This just confuses Crowfeather.
  • Kestrelflight then mentions that some cats in the clan think Breezepelt had something to do with Nightcloud’s death.
    • He remembers how Jayfeather found Flametail in StarClan and had him tell the other medicine cats that Jayfeather hadn’t killed him. Kestrelflight tells Crowfeather that he will find Nightcloud and ask her to do the same.

  • Crowfeather falls asleep and dreams about Ashfoot.
    • Ashfoot takes Crowfeather to the pool where he found Nightlcoud’s blood.
    • Crowfeather sees Nightcloud next to the pool, and she asks if he can see her.

Chapter 18
[]

  • Crowfeather and Kestrelflight arrive back at the WindClan camp.
  • Crowfeather learns that Featherpaw is awake and wants to see him.
  • Crowfeather apologizes for encouraging her to endanger herself, and Featherpaw tells him it wasn’t his fault. Sedgewhisker and Emberfoot apologize for their behavior and forgive Crowfeather.
  • Crowfeather tells Breezepelt about how Kestrelflight didn’t see Nightcloud in StarClan, and how he thinks that means she’s still alive. They decide to try to ask Onestar if they can go back to ThunderClan territory to look for her.
  • Onestar tells them they can’t go yet, because he has a plan to block up the tunnels with twigs and brush, and he needs every warrior.
  • Crowfeather argues with Onestar, and Onestar banishes him from WindClan until he has learned to be a loyal warrior again.

[]

  • Crowfeather heads toward the border stream between WindClan and ThunderClan.
  • He briefly entertains the idea of joining ThunderClan with Leafpool, but realizes how stupid that would be.
  • Heathertail and Breezepelt catch up with Crowfeather. They ask Crowfeather to come back and admit he was wrong, but Crowfeather refuses. Heathertail and Breezepelt go back to WindClan.
  • It starts to snow. Crowfeather chases a hare and falls down a slope. He blacks out.
  • Crowfeather dreams about the Dark Forest.
  • The Dark Forest cats try to persuade him to join them.
  • Ashfoot appears and chases them off.

[]

  • Ashfoot talks to Crowfeather in his dream.
  • Ashfoot tells him that he needs to tactfully convince Onestar to take Kestrelflight’s vision seriously, and that the stoats are only a forerunner to a greater threat.
  • Ashfoot once again tells Crowfeather to love, and Crowfeather says no one loves him. She chastises him, saying Breezepelt loves him and Heathertail respects him.
  • Crowfeather asks if he is dying, and Ashfoot tells him it is not his time to go to StarClan. Crowfeather asks if that means he won’t go to the Dark Forest, and Ashfoot says that no one considers him evil and that those cats were trying to trick him.
  • Crowfeather wakes up.
  • Crowfeather finds he is being treated by a cat named Yew.
  • Crowfeather asks how Yew found him, and Yew says he saw a pretty gray she-cat who led him to Crowfeather. Crowfeather recognizes her as Feathertail.
  • Yew brings Crowfeather a rabbit, and as they eat, Yew mentions he saw a black she-cat who was badly wounded.
  • Crowfeather realizes Yew must be talking about Nightcloud, and asks where she was heading. Yew tells him she was headed toward a Twolegplace on the other side of the forest.
  • Yew leads Crowfeather to the Twolegplace and reveals he is a kittypet. He says that he treated Nightcloud’s wound as best as he could, but told Nightcloud to go to the Twolegplace to let the Twolegs help her.
  • Crowfeather knows he has to go and find her, and decides to take Breezepelt with him.

[]

  • Crowfeather goes back to the WindClan camp to get Breezepelt.
  • Crowfeather meets Heathertail, who is on watch. He tells her about Yew, and how he thinks Nightcloud is in Twolegplace and needs Breezepelt’s help. Heathertail goes to fetch Breezepelt.
  • Crowfeather scents Hootpaw and tells him to come out. Hootpaw admits that he heard Crowfeather’s conversation with Heathertail and asks if he can come with him.
  • Crowfeather says that he can’t take another warriors apprentice on a dangerous mission. He sends Hootpaw back to camp, after making him promise not to tell Onestar anything.
  • Heathertail returns with Breezepelt, both cats exhausted from hauling branches all day to cover the entrances to the tunnels.
  • Hootpaw comes back with Gorsetail, saying that Crowfeather has to let him come if he has his mentor’s permission. Gorsetail says Hootpaw can come, as long as she gets to go with him. Crowfeather agrees to let them come.

Chapter 22
[]

  • Crowfeather, Breezepelt, Heathertail, Gorsetail, and Hootpaw head for Twolegplace to find Nightcloud.
  • Crowfeather leads the patrol, going in a wide half-circle to avoid the tunnels. Crowfeather remembers Kestrelflight’s vision and wonders about what it means.
  • The patrol reaches the border stream with ThunderClan. Crowfeather tells the patrol they’ll have to cross ThunderClan territory in order to make it back to camp before dawn. The patrol crosses the stream and rolls in the ThunderClan scent marks to disguise their scent.
  • As the WindClan patrol is crossing ThunderClan’s territory, they hear a ThunderClan patrol and hide in a bramble thicket. The ThunderClan patrol emerges into the open and is revealed to consist of Ivypool, Poppyfrost, Bumblestripe, Lilypaw, and Seedpaw.
  • Ivypool stalks straight up to the WindClan cats and asks them what they’re doing on ThunderClan territory. Bumblestripe points out that they’re carrying ThunderClan scent and must be up to no good, almost starting a fight with Breezepelt. Ivypool tells him to be quiet. Crowfeather says that they’re on an important mission to find Nightcloud, and explains how he thought she was dead until he met Yew. Ivypool tells them they can pass through. Ivypool sends Poppyfrost back to camp with the apprentices, and she and Bumblestripe escort the WindClan patrol.
  • At the pool where Crowfeather found Nightcloud’s blood, the patrol spreads out to try and find Nightcloud’s scent, with Ivypool and Bumblestripe watching. Breezepelt finds Nightcloud’s scent in a clump of chervil in the opposite direction of WindClan. The patrol deduces that the foxes must have been chasing her, and that she must have shaken them off somehow and ended up in Twolegplace.
  • The WindClan patrol, along with Ivypool and Bumblestripe, follow the foxes’s scent to the border of ThunderClan territory.
  • Ivypool and Bumblestripe leave, and the WindClan cats continue on until they find a Thunderpath. As the patrol gets closer to the Thunderpath, the fox scent gets stronger. Crowfeather realizes that the scent is fresh and there are foxes nearby.

[]

  • The WindClan patrol is attacked by the foxes.
  • Crowfeather finds himself face-to-face with an old dog fox, and two more foxes jump out of the bushes.
  • The patrol flees. Hootpaw falls behind.
  • Crowfeather runs into a tree, then dashes back for Hootpaw and tells the patrol to climb the trees. Crowfeather boosts Hootpaw up the nearest tree.
  • Crowfeather spots Gorsetail in a nearby beech tree and Breezepelt and Heathertail in an oak tree a little further off.
  • The foxes catch up and and prowl around the trees.
  • Crowfeather and Hootpaw cross a branch into Gorsetail’s tree. The three cats then jump across to Breezepelt and Heathertail’s oak.
  • The cats jump from tree to tree, but the foxes follow them. As they get nearer to the Thunderpath, the foxes become wary of the monsters and eventually flee back into the forest.
  • The patrol waits to make sure the foxes are gone, then scramble down from the trees.
  • The patrol walks to the Thunderpath.
  • Hootpaw sees a monster for the first time and is excited instead of scared.
  • The cats split up and search their side of Thunderpath for Nightcloud’s scent.
  • Hootpaw finds Nightcloud’s scent and calls Crowfeather over. Crowfeather detects a trace of Yew’s scent as well. The cats are relieved to discover that Nightcloud escaped from the foxes.
  • The patrol tries to find out where Nightcloud went from the Thunderpath, but can’t find any more traces of her scent. Crowfeather realizes that they need to search on the other side of the Thunderpath, near the Twolegplace.
  • The patrol crosses the Thunderpath, avoiding a monster by barely a tail-length.
  • Heathertail takes the lead, and after a few heartbeats of walking she finds Nightcloud’s scent.
  • The patrol follows Nightcloud’s scent toward Twolegplace.
  • Nightcloud’s scent is hard to detect among the competing scents of Twolegplace, but Crowfeather remarks that Breezepelt seems to have a knack for following his mother’s scent.
  • Moonhigh is past, and the Thunderpath is dark and silent.
  • The patrol follows Nightcloud’s scent trail until is is swamped by the mingled scents of several Twolegs.
  • Breezepelt wonders if they’ve come this far only to lose Nightcloud to a Twoleg.
  • Heathertail points out a jagged hole in a nearby fence and bets that Nightcloud went through it. Crowfeather gives her permission to check it out.
  • Heathertail finds Nightcloud’s scent on the other side of the fence, and the patrol follows her into a Twoleg garden.
  • The patrol follows Nightcloud’s scent trail across multiple Twoleg gardens.
  • Gorsetail warns Hootpaw not to be stupid in Twoleg territory, and Crowfeather notices Hootpaw’s wide eyes and remarks that he’ll be boasting to the other apprentices for moons.
  • Crowfeather hears barking and whips around to see five dogs bounding out of a hole in the side of a Twoleg den.
  • The patrol is surrounded and herded into a corner of the fence before they can react.
  • Crowfeather hisses at them and tells them to back off, but Heathertail notices that they seem to be playing and are only kits. She tells the patrol not to hurt them and to climb the fence while she holds them off.
  • Heathertail plays with the dog kits until she sees that the rest of the patrol is safe, then joins the other cats on the fence. At the same moment, a Twoleg appears at the entrance to the den, yapping furiously.
  • Crowfeather leads the way along the top of the fence, away from the dog kits.
  • Crowfeather jumps down from the top of the fence into a Twoleg garden to search for Nightcloud’s scent. The rest of the patrol follows.
  • The cats search the garden but can’t find her scent. Crowfeather begins to wonder if they have to go back to the dog kits, but Heathertail spots two sleeping kittypets on a nearby ledge. She says they might’ve seen Nightcloud.
  • Crowfeather tries to wake the two kittypets, but they are annoyed and ignore him. Heathertail takes over and asks the kittypets politely for help.
  • Crowfeather asks if they know Yew, and the kittypets say that they don’t. Crowfeather then asks if they’ve seen a black cat who was quite thin and bleeding. The kittypets say that they have. Crowfeather is swamped with relief. The kittypets continue, saying that she turned up at the garden next door and kept meowing about returning to her ‘Clan’ and that her ‘Clanmates’ would be looking for her. They say she wouldn’t play games with them because she was a ‘warrior’.
  • Breezepelt informs the kittypets that they are her Clanmates and have come to take her home. Crowfeather asks the kittypets where the black she-cat is now, and they say that the housefolk next door took her in. Crowfeather thanks the two cats and they wish the WindClan cats luck.
  • The patrol emerges into the next garden and pick up Nightcloud’s scent.
  • Crowfeather scans the Twoleg den and sees a large gap in the wall that starts at the ground and rises far above his head. It is covered by transparent Twoleg stuff.
  • Crowfeather peers through the stuff into the Twoleg den and sees a nest made of interlaced twigs and soft white bedding. Inside the nest is Nightcloud, with a strange white leaf encircling her head.
  • Crowfeather is relieved until Nightcloud turns, revealing a white kittypet tom in the nest with her.

[]

  • Crowfeather stands frozen in front of the transparent Twoleg stuff.
  • The patrol bangs on the barrier to attract Nightcloud’s attention. There is a white strip separating the barrier into two parts. Nightcloud thrusts her head out through a tiny gap between them to talk to the patrol.
  • The white tom wakes up and walks to the barrier with Nightcloud. Every cat ignores him.
  • Crowfeather asks Nightcloud how they can get her out. She tells them the door slides open. The white tom says to be careful and not break their housefolks's things, and asks Nightcloud who the strange cats are. She tells him she’ll explain later.
  • The patrol tries to push open the barrier, but it doesn’t move. Crowfeather says they need to get the Twolegs to open it by yowling really loud to attract their attention.
  • The white kittypet turns to Nightcloud and asks why she can’t just stay with him. She apologizes and says she’s always been a Clan cat and she belongs on the moor. After a moment of thought, Nightcloud asks if Pickle would like to join her on the moor. Pickle declines, and Nightcloud tells him they’ll have to part ways.
  • Crowfeather tells Heathertail and Hootpaw that they’ll have to make the loudest noise they can to get the Twolegs to open the door. He tells Breezepelt that it’s his job to make sure the Twolegs don’t stop Nightcloud from coming out.
  • Heathertail and Hootpaw let out and earsplitting yowl, and after a few moments, a male Twoleg comes into view, followed by a smaller female Twoleg. The male Twoleg opens the door, and looks around the garden for the source of the sound.
  • Nightcloud is about to slip out when Pickle lets out a caterwaul, alerting the Twolegs. The female Twoleg turns toward him and scoops up Nightcloud. Breezepelt realizes Pickle’s plan and tries to attack him, but Crowfeather stops him.
  • Breezepelt runs into the den and jumps at the female Twoleg, who drops Nightcloud.
  • The cats flee from the garden. The male Twoleg tries to grab Nightcloud, but she dodges and the patrol escapes. Nightcloud calls back one last apology to Pickle.
  • The cats don’t stop running until they cross the Thunderpath and reach the forest.
  • Breezepelt asks Nightcloud what happened to her, she’ll tell him after they get the strange leaf off her. Breezepelt and Heathertail help her get it off. Crowfeather asks her what it was for, and Nightcloud says Pickle told her it was to keep her from messing with her wound, as if she would be so stupid.
  • Nightcloud says that when she was hurt fighting the stoats, she was completely lost in the tunnels. She realized she was on ThunderClan territory and wanted to go back to WindClan, but when she stopped by the pool for a drink, the foxes jumped her. She says the foxes chased her, but didn’t catch her and that they seemed to be playing with her. She tells them, embarrassed, that a Twoleg and his dog came by and scared off the foxes, saving her. She then ran from him and met Yew.
  • Crowfeather interrupts to say that he also met Yew, and that’s how he found her.
  • Nightcloud continues with her story, saying she took Yew’s advice to go to the Twolegs and ended up in the garden where the WindClan cats found her. She says the Twolegs took her to a den full of disgusting smells, where a Twoleg gave her a white seed that made her fall asleep. When she woke up, her wound was fixed.
  • Nightcloud shows the patrol her wound, which had been fastened shut by tiny scraps of tendril. Crowfeather wonders if Kestrelflight could patch wounds like that. Nightcloud says that it seemed incredibly complicated, and that the Twoleg had then put the strange leaf around her neck. After that, the Twolegs had taken her back to their den, and she had figured she’d stay there until she felt well enough to escape back to the WindClan camp.
  • Crowfeather asks Nightcloud about the white tom, and Nightcloud responds with a purr that Pickle was her friend. Crowfeather wonders if the Twolegs had done something to her mind.
  • The cats head back to the WindClan camp.
  • After a few moments of silence, Nightcloud says that she’s surprised they came for her. Crowfeather says that of course they did, and Breezepelt says they would never leave her. Nightcloud nuzzles Breezepelt and says that she knows he never would. Crowfeather feels a pang in his heart and thinks that Nightcloud was right and that he doesn’t belong with them.
  • By the time the WindClan cats cross the ThunderClan border, the sun is rising.
  • Crowfeather explains how they had met Ivypool and her patrol, and Nightcloud realizes that’s why they all stink of ThunderClan.
  • The patrol sneaks cautiously across ThunderClan’s territory, and when the border stream comes in sight, Hootpaw dashes forward to leap across it. Gorsetail leaps in front of him to stop him.
  • Crowfeather tastes the air and says the ThunderClan scent is stale, and that they should wait until the dawn patrol passes. The patrol hides our in a bank of ferns to rest.
  • After a while, a ThunderClan patrol lead by Dustpelt passes by. The WindClan cats wait until they are gone, then cross the river back to WindClan territory.
  • The sun has risen, and every cat is exhausted.
  • As the cats near camp, Crowfeather hears voices raised in distress and smells a disgusting odor on a gust of wind, coming from the direction of the WindClan camp.

[]

  • Crowfeather, Nightcloud, Breezepelt, Heathertail, Gorsetail and Hootpaw arrive at the WindClan camp.
  • The camp is completely devastated, with bedding strewn everywhere, dens partially destroyed, and the bodies of injured cats covering the ground. The reek of stoats and blood fills the air. Crowfeather realizes the stoats have attacked.
  • Crowfeather leads his patrol into camp, where they find Emberfoot first. He is lying on his side and bleeding from a deep scratch on down his flank. When he sees them, he he yowls to Onestar that the patrol is back.
  • The WindClan leader emerges from his den, and Crowfeather notices a large wound on his neck and shoulder. Onestar reprimands the patrol for leaving without telling him, but Crowfeather notices that his anger is mostly directed at Gorsetail, Breezepelt and Heathertail. Onestar continues, saying it was a long and terrible battle and that many cats were injured. Crowfeather tries to tell Onestar it was his idea, but Onestar ignores him, saying three more warriors would have made a difference.
  • Crowfeather realizes that Onestar is right. He apologizes, but says he had a good reason for leaving as he reveals Nightcloud. Nightcloud dips her head to Onestar, and after a quick exchange, Onestar tells her he’ll have to hear the whole story later.
  • Onestar tells Heathertail that when he couldn’t find her after the battle, he’d thought the stoats had gotten her. Heathertail tells him she had to go.
  • Onestar reveals that he lost a life to the stoats. Crowfeather realizes that his Clanmates absence is responsible for Onestar’s loss of a life. Breezepelt retorts that it’s not their fault, and that if Onestar had let them finish blocking up the tunnels, like Harespring wanted, the stoats wouldn’t have attacked. Crowfeather feels oddly left out realizing that Clan life had gone on without him. He also knows that Onestar made the wrong choice. Onestar asks Breezepelt if he’s a while WindClan cat, and Breezepelt replies that he is. Onestar tells him he better start acting like it and he’ll be keeping an eye on him. Breezepelt opens his mouth to retort, but Heathertail slaps her tail over his mouth.
  • Onestar tells them they have to start rebuilding camp and helping the injured cats. He assigns Heathertail to help Kestrelflight, and Breezepelt and Gorsetail to report to Leaftail and Furzepelt. Onestar tells Hootpaw he won’t punish him for following his mentor, but tells him to show better judgement in the future. Hootpaw scurries off to join the other apprentices, and Crowfeather overhears him telling the other apprentices about his adventure.
  • Onestar tells Nightcloud to go and rest, but she says that all she’s had to do for the past few days is lie around and eat kittypet food. She asks if she can help Kestrelflight instead, and Onestar let’s her. Crowfeather turns to Nightcloud, trying to think of what to say, but she flicks her tail angrily and tells him he doesn’t need to talk to her before stalking off to the medicine den. Crowfeather wonders how he could’ve been mates with a cat he barely knew.
  • Onestar tells Crowfeather that he was right about blocking up the tunnels, and asks him if he wants to come back. Crowfeather says yes, and Onestar says he is a WindClan Warrior again, bit only because he brought Nightcloud back. He tells him to make sure to know the difference between being difficult and being disloyal, then sends him off to help Kestrelflight.
  • Crowfeather is helping Kestrelflight in his den.
  • Sunhigh is past, and Crowfeather is exhausted. He feels pain in his heart at seeing all his injured Clanmates. There are too many wounds and not enough herbs, and Kestrelflight needs to decide which cats need treatment most urgently.
  • Crouchfoot says he still can’t believe the stoats are white. Whiskernose suggests that maybe they are ghosts, as they seem to have something against WindClan. Kestrelflight shushes them.
  • Crowfeather feels guilty about how he went to Twolegplace instead of helping.
  • Kestrelflight stumbles and drops his herbs as he tries to enter the den, and Crowfeather tells him that he needs to rest. Kestrelflight reluctantly obeys, and says that he’s not sure he can treat all the injured cats on his own. Crowfeather realizes that they need help from another Clan. Crowfeather thinks about how badly asking ThunderClan for help went, but knows he needs to convince Onestar to send for Leafpool or Jayfeather.
  • Crowfeather walks up to Onestar and apologizes for persuading Breezepelt and the others to leave camp. Onestar growls, unimpressed, but Crowfeather presses on. He says that they need to ask medicine cats from other Clans for help, and Onestar exclaims that it will make WindClan look weak to ask for help. Crowfeather says that WindClan is weak, and that cat’s lives are at stake. After a bit more persuasion, Onestar agrees to ask RiverClan and ThunderClan for help.

[]

  • Crowfeather is traveling to ThunderClan with Harespring to ask Bramblestar for help.
  • Crowfeather comforts himself by thinking about how Breezepelt and Gorsetail are on their way to RiverClan, and Mistystar is sure to send Mothwing and Willowshine.
  • Crowfeather and Harespring reach the border stream.
  • Harespring asks Crowfeather what he was thinking when he asked Bramblestar for help with the stoats behind Onestar’s back. Crowfeather replies that he had to do the right think for the whole Clan, because the Clan is more important than one cat, even if that cat is the leader. Harespring says it is, but in the end, they should listen to their leader. Crowfeather is surprised and admits that going to ThunderClan wasn’t the smartest move. He tells Harespring that he’s a good deputy, and Harespring says that it should have been Crowfeather, but he’s glad he is accepted.
  • Crowfeather then says that Leafpool will help, if he can only talk to her. Harespring asks quietly if it is strange for them to be talking when they used to be so close. Crowfeather thinks that, now that he and Leafpool lead separate lives, thinking of them being together doesn’t make his heart ache anymore. He only feels admiration and hope that she is happy. He tells Harespring that he still respects Leafpool, and thinks she will help.
  • A ThunderClan patrol made up of Poppyfrost, Lilypaw, and Birchfall emerges from the ThunderClan side of the stream. Harespring and Crowfeather greet the patrol and ask to speak to Bramblestar. Crowfeather informs the ThunderClan cats that they found Nightcloud, and the ThunderClan cats look surprised and pleased. Birchfall convinces Poppyfrost to let the cats cross.
  • Harespring and Crowfeather cross the stream and follow the ThunderClan cats to their camp.
  • Many cats are out in the open in the stone hollow, including Purdy, Seedpaw, Squirrelflight, Brightheart and her three kits, Dewkit, Snowkit, and Amberkit, and Daisy. Poppyfrost tells Crowfeather and Harespring to wait while she gets Bramblestar. Harespring tells Crowfeather to leave the talking to him.
  • Bramblestar comes down from his den and asks Harespring and Crowfeather why they’re here. Harespring says they need a medicine cat, and Bramblestar asks why they’re asking for help now after Onestar insulted him when he offered to help with the stoats. Harespring says they’ve had more trouble with the stoats, and that many cats are injured. Bramblestar hesitates for a moment, then tells Squirrelflight to fetch Leafpool and Jayfeather.
  • Bramblestar asks Harespring to tell him exactly what happened. Harespring says that they tried to block up the tunnels on their side and that the stoats attacked their camp. Bramblestar gets angry, saying that they haven’t dealt with the stoats and instead just drove them toward ThunderClan territory.
  • Squirrelflight returns with Leafpool and Jayfeather. Bramblestar asks Harespring if he is correct that he went to offer Onestar ThunderClan’s help, Onestar insulted him and insisted he had it under control, they didn’t have it under control, and now they’re asking for his help again. Harespring hesitates, and Crowfeather jumps in, saying they need help now and that cats could die. Bramblestar gives in and lets Leafpool go with them.
  • Leafpool looks relieved as she steps up beside Crowfeather, and Crowfeather knows that she hates to see cats suffering. He pushes down the warmth and affection the felt for her as it threatens to arise again, and thinks about how he never felt that way with Nightcloud. Harespring thanks Bramblestar and says they should leave right away. Leafpool tells Crowfeather to wait as she needs to get some herbs, and dashes away to her den with Jayfeather beside her. He is telling her something, tail twitching, and Crowfeather thinks he’s probably warning her to beware of dangerous WindClan cats.
  • Leafpool emerges from the medicine den with herbs, and the three cats head out of the ThunderClan camp.
  • Leafpool says Ivypool told her they went looking for Nightcloud. Crowfeather informs her that they rescued Nightcloud from a Twoleg den. Leafpool says she is glad and starts to say that having kits together ties you together no matter what, but breaks off. Crowfeather knows she is thinking about how she and him also had kits together. After a moment, Crowfeather says that he does want to be friends with Nightcloud.
  • Crowfeather and Leafpool cross the border stream.
  • Harespring is nowhere to be seen. Crowfeather thinks that he must have gone ahead to tell WindClan that help was on the way.
  • Crowfeather spots movement and thinks it’s Harespring, but a stoat emerges into the open instead.
  • It totters toward them, seemingly wounded or ill. Leafpool exclaims that that’s what a stoat looks like, then remarks that it looks disgusting. Crowfeather agrees, and starts to say more when the stoat leaps at Leafpool, causing her to drop her herbs.
  • Crowfeather jumps at the stoat and drags it to the ground, but the stoat squirms out of his grasp and bites him in the leg.
  • Leafpool slashes at the stoat’s hindquarters, and Crowfeather knocks it away. The stoat then leaps for Leafpool, but Crowfeather intercepts it and drags it away. He tries to slash at its throat, but it squirms away and runs into the tunnels.
  • Crowfeather starts to follow it, but Leafpool stops him, saying he is injured. Crowfeather’s thoughts start to swim, ranging from Kestrelflight’s vision of water, to his injured Clanmates, to Pickle. He can feel blood gushing from his hind leg as his energy slowly ebbs away.
  • Crowfeather is faintly aware of Leafpool talking to Harespring about getting him to camp before he passes out.

  • Leafpool leaves the den to get Crowfeather some prey, and as Crowfeather lies in his nest, he thinks about how it’s sorta’ve a relief to have someone else take care of him.
  • Kestrelflight enters the medicine den and checks Crowfeather’s wound. Crowfeather asks how the rest of the Clan is doing, and Kestrelflight replies that they’re doing okay.
  • Leafpool comes into the den with thyme leaves and tells Crowfeather to eat them. He does so, and Kestrelflight excuses himself from the den.
  • Crowfeather asks where the prey Leafpool promised is, and Leafpool replies that it’s coming. Leafpool asks Crowfeather how he feels, and Crowfeather says that things have been better.
  • To change the subject, Crowfeather asks Leafpool how she is in ThunderClan. Leafpool says that StarClan has accepted her again, and so have Lionblaze and Jayfeather. She says that Hollyleaf was the only cat who couldn’t accept the fact that she was Half-Clan, and that she died bravely fighting for her Clan.
  • Leafpool tells Crowfeather that he can be proud of all his kits, and Crowfeather has a sudden urge to confide in her about Breezepelt. Leafpool tells Crowfeather that his relationship with Nightcloud and Breezepelt seems to be improving, and that he can be difficult to get along with sometimes. She tells him that he needs to try harder to better his relationship with them.
  • Crowfeather thinks that that’s almost the exact same advice that Ashfoot gave him, and is about to ask Leafpool more when Nightcloud enters the den with fresh-kill. Crowfeather asks Nightcloud is she wants to share, and she says she already ate, but still settles down beside him. Leafpool leaves the den.
  • Crowfeather tells Nightcloud he was worried about her. Nightcloud admits that when the Twolegs took her in, she almost didn’t want to go back to WindClan. She says that Pickle made her comfortable, and Crowfeather thinks that as her mate, he never made her feel like that. He had never loved her as he had loved Feathertail or Leafpool.
  • Nightcloud jokes that if Crowfeather tells anyone that, she’ll claw his fur off. Crowfeather apologizes to Nightcloud for never treating her right when they were mates, then hesitantly asks if they should be mates again. Nightcloud says that they shouldn’t, as they don’t honestly love each other and never have. Crowfeather asks if they could just be friends for Breezepelt’s sake, and Nightcloud agrees.
  • Nightcloud leaves the den, and Crowfeather falls asleep.
  • Crowfeather dreams of Ashfoot.
  • Ashfoot says that Crowfeather has finally learned to love, and that she sent him the dreams of Hawkfrost and Hollyleaf to show Crowfeather how much he cares for his kits. Ashfoot says that she is proud of Crowfeather, and the dream fades away.
