"Why should I care about StarClan? Does StarClan care about us? Our medicine cat has left us. We haven't found the other Clans. What if everything we've been told about StarClan is just a…a pretty story? Because if StarClan really exists, why would they allow us to suffer like this?"
— Curlypaw to Hawkwing about her doubts in Hawkwing's Journey, page 362

Curlypaw is a long-haired gray she-cat.[2]

Curlypaw is a kittypet and former SkyClan apprentice under Leafstar's leadership. She was born as Curlykit to Birdwing and Sagenose alongside her littermates Snipkit and Fidgetkit in the gorge. When Darktail's rogues forced SkyClan out of their camp, she and her littermates were separated from the rest of the Clan and Snipkit drowned while crossing a river. Upon reuniting with her family, she was apprenticed as Curlypaw with the warrior Hawkwing as her mentor.

When SkyClan crossed through the Twolegplace, Curlypaw was captured by the rogue Dodge, but Hawkwing killed him to rescue her. From that point onward, Curlypaw's experience as an apprentice improved, and she became skilled in hunting and fighting under her mentor's tutelage. Curlypaw often went on patrols with her Clanmates, including the group of hunters that witnessed Hawkwing's mate Pebbleshine being taken away by a Twoleg monster. However, as the moons of SkyClan's journey dragged on, Curlypaw began questioning StarClan after her Clan continued to face troubles during their travels. Eventually, she chose to leave SkyClan along with the former warrior Parsleyseed to become a kittypet.

Darkest Night bonus scene[]

In the bonus scene, Mintfur mentions that Sagenose's kits are already apprentices and how much they must have grown over time. Nettlesplash later remembers how his kits shared the nursery with Sagenose and Birdwing's older kits in SkyClan's old territory.

Hawkwing's Journey[]

"You're such a great mentor, Hawkwing. I can't imagine learning so much from any other cat. I need you."

Leafstar

Curlykit was born in SkyClan's gorge under Leafstar's leadership.

Curlykit is a kit living in SkyClan in the gorge who is born to the warriors Birdwing and Sagenose under Leafstar's leadership. At a Clan meeting, Birdwing's kit, including Curlykit, frisk around her paws as the queen sweeps them closer with a swish of her tail. Later, during the battle against the rogues, Curlykit and her littermates are heard inside the nursery. The gray she-cat calls out that they'll protect the younger kit, while her brother Fidgetkit agrees. Their Clanmates Hawkwing and Pebblepaw manage to drive the rogues away, and the nursery queens profusely thank the pair. Curlykit comments that they wouldn't have let them in the den, to which the dark gray warrior replies that they are very brave.
After SkyClan loses the struggle in the gorge to the rogue Darktail and his group, cats scatter as they flee. Rain pours down as Hawkwing heads toward the river, where he hears voices coming from downstream. The dark gray tom sees Curlykit encouraging her littermates to cross the river, though there are no warriors around. Hawkwing yowls at them to stop, but soon realizes that they must be trying to reach their Clanmates on the other side. Curlykit leads the group, and the gray warrior watches her reach the far shore and be hauled ashore by Pebblepaw. Fidgetkit follows her, jumping on the bank by himself before turning to help his littermate. However, as Snipkit tries to jump to the next stone, she falls in the river and Hawkwing is unable pull her out. Though the cats try calling for Snipkit, they eventually conclude she is dead. Curlykit and Fidgetkit protest that they must find their sister, but the medicine cat Echosong convinces them to look in the morning, despite their grief. In the morning, every cat looks for Snipkit, to no avail. Curlykit and Fidgetkit grow frantic, and wonder desperately what to tell their parents. The gray she-kit wails that they don't know where anyone is, and is comforted by Pebblepaw.
Echosong

After fleeing the gorge, Curlykit helped care for Echosong after a raccoon attack.

After a raccoon attacks Echosong, Hawkwing asks the Curlykit and Fidgetkit to come with him to find cobwebs, and they happily accept, bringing back a lot. The warrior then says that he and Pebblepaw will hunt, but Curlykit protests that the group should go on looking for Snipkit. Echosong pulls the she-cat closer to her, and replies that they must keep up their strength, as becoming weak won't do the missing kit any good. Later, Hawkwing and Pebblepaw return from hunting with a mouse and some voles, though Curlykit and Fidgetkit are disappointed Snipkit isn't with them. The cats eat, but immediately afterward Fidgetkit asks if they can go search for Snipkit. Echosong sadly responds that if Snipkit had made it to shore, she would have been found by now. Curlykit lets out a miserable wail, but Fidgetkit persists that their sister could have made it to the opposite bank. The medicine cat agrees, but tells the kit that they must go find the rest of the Clan.
The cats are led into the Twolegplace by Echosong, with Curlykit and Fidgetkit looking around in wonder. The cats soon reach the rest of the SkyClan cats near Twoleg nest of Ebonyclaw—one of the Clan's daylight warriors. Birdwing springs up and greets her two kits, but questions where Snipkit is. The littermates tell their mother what happened, prompting Birdwing and Sagenose draw the pair close to them in grief. Later, Snipkit's body is found washed up on the shore of the river, and is brought back to camp by their Clanmate Tinycloud. During the burial, Curlykit and Fidgetkit whimper throughout. Later, Leafstar gives Curlykit and her littermate their apprentice names. Curlypaw receives Hawkwing as her mentor, and Fidgetpaw is now the medicine cat apprentice to Echosong. After touching noses with him, she assures the tom of her work ethics, which he accepts. SkyClan decides to travel to find ThunderClan, and Curlypaw excitedly asks her mentor if he will teach her to hunt along the way. Hawkwing agrees, leaving the apprentice to follow the warriors Blossomheart and Pebbleshine through the Twolegplace.
Hawkwing

When Curlypaw is captured by Dodge's group, Hawkwing kills the rogue leader to free her.

SkyClan crosses many Thunderpaths, and eventually running into the rogue Shorty. He leads them to where his companion Stick resides, and the tom divides the cats into hunting patrols. and Curlypaw hunts with her brother and the warrior Bellaleaf, which makes Hawkwing wary for her safety. However Bellaleaf and Fidgetpaw hurriedly return from their patrol announcing that Curlypaw has been taken by several cats. Leafstar orders everyone to stay calm, and tells the warrior to lead them back to where Curlypaw was taken. Stick feels the endeavor is useless if the rogue leader Dodge has their cat, but the leader refuses to abandon the apprentice. The tom Harley leads the SkyClan cats to Dodge's camp, where Hawkwing sees Curlypaw trapped in a pit guarded by two cats. The mentor lets his apprentice know he's here, where she tries to reach him, proving she's unharmed.
Dodge tries to strike a deal with Leafstar to return Curlypaw unharmed if she helped drive Stick and his cats from the Twolegplace. The SkyClan leader declines, insisting that her Clan does not betray their friends. Dodge shrugs and turns to call out to the apprentice's guards, but Leafstar protests. The rogue glances at her and meows that they could try to fight their way out, but Curlypaw would be the first to die. Birdwing, the she-cat's mother, pleads with Leafstar to save her daughter. Silence drapes over the clearing until Hawkwing recklessly steps forward and suggests a one-to-one match between them. The dark gray warrior states that if he wins, Curlypaw is set free unharmed. He then goes on to say that if they lose, SkyClan will fight for them. Dodge accepts the challenge, but in the end, Hawkwing wins the fight and kills the rogue. Curlypaw is released, and she rushes over to her parents.
Waspwhisker

Curlypaw patrolled with Waspwhisker and others to hunt chickens, which ultimately results in Pebbleshine's capture by Twolegs.

Several days after, Hawkwing teaches Curlypaw a hunting crouch, and she listens carefully to his lessons. A bit after, Curlypaw catches her first mouse. Hawkwing praises her, and instructs the she-cat to give it to the elder Clovertail, which she does. When the SkyClan cats see some cows, Hawkwing assures her they are harmless. Curlypaw and her Clanmates arrive at the loner Barley's farm, and she hunts with a patrol. Impressed by her hunting, Hawkwing praises his apprentice and has her deliver the catches to the warrior Cherrytail before going out hunting several more times. As the days of travel continue, Hawkwing continues to be impressed by his apprentice's willingness to help her Clanmates, including him after his shoulder injury from a fall. As he recovers, Curlypaw goes on a patrol with him, Pebbleshine, Blossomheart, and SkyClan's deputy Waspwhisker. Curlypaw follows them, wary of the monsters nearby, but interested in the chickens present. Waspwhisker orders the apprentice and Hawkwing to keep watch, leading the rest of the patrol to the chickens to hunt. When Curlypaw and her mentor hear a Twoleg coming, their warn their Clanmates, prompting most of them to escape. However, Pebbleshine remains trapped inside, and her capture by the monster deeply grieves her mate Hawkwing.
Days after the incident, Curlypaw nervously approaches the tom and offers him a mouse she's caught, though he refuses it. Hawkwing attempts to stay where he is to wait for his mate to return, but is convinced to travel with SkyClan by Leafstar and Echosong. However, he remains grieved as they move on, feeling that even his mentoring of Curlypaw seems meaningless. Not long after, the cats come up over a rise and see what they think might be their new home. Hawkwing and Curlypaw, along with their Clanmates Macgyver, Parsleyseed, and Birdwing go on a patrol to scope out the area and hunt. Curlypaw stays near her mentor, scenting several types of prey. The cats then finds a suitable place to camp, and Curlypaw comments that it looks a bit like the gorge. Hawkwing decides to go report the information to Leafstar after a brief conversation with the kittypet Max.
Fidgetflake

Curlypaw and Fidgetpaw remain close as apprentices.

SkyClan settles in the location Hawkwing's patrol found, and Curlypaw continues to hone her hunting skills. Though her mentor becomes frustrated by her initially, he comes to praise Curlypaw. The apprentice warns her mentor of a large bird attacking Blossomheart, which then eventually turns its attentions on the younger she-cat. Hawkwing proves able to rescue her, though she is shaken by the incident. Days later, Hawkwing sees his apprentice playing with the warrior Rileypool, alongside Fidgetpaw. The dark gray tom reflects that she's been doing much better since he started paying more attention to her training, and that she'll be a great warrior. By the next moon however, Hawkwing becomes frustrated with his apprentice's frequent disappearances, resulting in her missing battle training. He asks her to be more mindful of it, which she agrees to.
A few sunrises later, Hawkwing becomes suspicious of Curlypaw's activities, noticing a strange scent on her pelt. She later helps hunt a rabbit with her mentor, which makes her proud. The apprentice asks to talk to Hawkwing in private, but is cut off by the sound of dogs barking. Upon investigating, the cats find that the queen Plumwillow and her kits have been taken. After rescuing them, Curlypaw informs her mentor that she wishes to leave SkyClan and become a kittypet. She admits to to visiting Parsleyseed in his new den after his recent departure from their Clan, expressing her reasoning behind why she dislikes feeling unsafe. Hawkwing is displeased, but she questions the validity of StarClan after everything SkyClan has suffered. The next morning, the gray warrior bids her farewell and watches her race towards her new life. Hawkwing returns to camp, where implores Leafstar and Waspwhisker to re-evaluate SkyClan's situation, mentioning their young cats leaving to be kittypets. The leader agrees, calling a Clan meeting, as Hawkwing continues to think of his former apprentice.

Personality[]

Curlypaw: "I've thought long and hard about this, Hawkwing. I know it's the right decision for me. But that doesn't mean we'll never see each other again. We still live by the same lake."
Hawkwing: "Good luck, and may StarClan light your path."
Curlypaw: "Yours too."
—Curlypaw and Hawkwing when she leaves SkyClan Hawkwing's Journey, page 365
Hawkwing

Curlypaw's mentor Hawkwing was fiercely protective of his apprentice, and proud of her accomplishments.

As a young cat, Curlykit is content with her life in SkyClan alongside her littermates, and enjoys playing.[4] In the moons that follow, Hawkwing feels that Curlykit and her siblings have matured, seeing that they are brave enough to defend the nursery from intruders during a battle. Taking charge, she leads Fidgetkit and Snipkit in attempting to cross a river to safety after SkyClan is forced to flee their camp, being the first to make it across the stretch of water. Seeing his sister's success, Fidgetkit follows and also makes it to the shore. Snipkit, however, drowns before she can be rescued, causing Curlykit to grieve deeply. In the time that follows, Curlykit is insistent that Snipkit should be searched for.[5] Despite this, the she-kit remains eager to help her Clanmates, and fetches cobwebs for Echosong when she is injured.[6] When Snipkit's body is found, Curlykit proves inconsolable, recieving comfort from Pebblepaw and later her parents.[6]
Though shaken, the kit is regarded as courageous by her Clanmates, and becomes an apprentice with the name Curlypaw shortly after. As a new apprentice, Curlypaw is excited to learn how to be a good warrior. Her passion for learning inspires Hawkwing to pledge to teach her the best he can.[7] Though the memory of Snipkit's death continues to haunt her when around water, the apprentice does her best to not let it slow her down. Hawkwing becomes fond of his apprentice quickly,[8] and she respects him greatly. When Curlypaw is captured by Dodge's group in the Twolegplace, she pleads for her mentor,[9] and he kills the rogue leader to secure his apprentice's freedom. The she-cat acts as brave as she can, but is relieved to be with her parents once freed.[10] As she continues her warrior training, many cats in her Clan, including Hawkwing, praise Curlypaw for her improving hunting skills.[11]
After Pebbleshine's capture by a Twoleg monster[12] the apprentice's care and sympathy shine through in her care for him, and praise of his mentorship.[13] Though Curlypaw is initially excited at the prospect of the lake SkyClan finds being their new home, she feels the loss of Hawkwing's engagement in her training as he grieves Pebbleshine.[14] She is grateful when he saves her life from a large bird, but also begins to feel that Clan life is too dangerous[15] and the constant troubles are not worth being in a Clan. The passion for her training wanes, despite her hunting skills remaining sharp.[16] When Parsleyseed decides to leave SkyClan and become a kittypet, Curlypaw agrees with his reasonings—that it is too dangerous to be a Clan cat, and that StarClan has abandoned them. Though she is fond of her mentor, she becomes disengaged with his training when starting to visit Parsleyseed in his new den—eventually choosing the same path for her life. Curlypaw is not deterred by the resistance to her decision, and proudly defends her wishes for her life to Hawkwing. Though she does inform her family, Curlypaw assures her mentor that she has thought the decision through, which makes him feel that she has matured enough to make her own life choices.[17] Curlypaw, though not willing to be part of SkyClan anymore, wishes the best of luck to her former Clanmates in their futures.[18]

Relationships[]

Hawkwing[]

Hawkwing: "Curlypaw!"
Curlypaw: "Yes, Hawkwing?"
Hawkwing: "Don't 'yes, Hawkwing' me. Where were you this morning? I wanted to take you for battle practice, but you were nowhere to be found."
Curlypaw: "Oh, sorry, Hawkwing. I was awake early, so I thought I'd hunt on my own for a while. I caught two mice."
—Hawkwing and Curlypaw Hawkwing's Journey, page 333
Hawkwing

Curlypaw deeply respected and admired her mentor Hawkwing during SkyClan's travels.

When she is a kit, Curlykit looks up to Hawkwing and trusts him to protect SkyClan. Though devastated when Snipkit drowns,[5] Curlykit and Hawkwing prove able to work together to help their other Clanmates. The older tom feels sympathetic for the kits, but also notes their excitement at exploring a new place when entering the Twolegplace.[6] When she's apprenticed shortly after, Hawkwing initially feels unprepared to mentor a young cat. However, he quickly becomes fond of Curlypaw and vows to help her learn and grow. Her passion for adventure feels refreshing for him, and he happily answers her questions about hunting, encouraging her to keep a positive outlook for SkyClan's future.[7]
Hawkwing keeps close watch over Curlypaw during SkyClan's travels,[8] and in return earns her respect and admiration. The mentor worries about his apprentice when in unfamiliar territory such as when staying with Stick's cats, an inkling that proves right when Curlypaw is captured by Dodge's group. The abduction infuriates Hawkwing, who demands to be part of the rescue attempt. When seeing her mentor, the apprentice trusts him to free her as she strains toward his voice, despite being terrified.[9] Hawkwing's fury leads him to challenge and kill Dodge for Curlypaw's freedom, a move that several cats think is rash.[10] After Curlypaw's rescue, her hunting skills quickly improve during SkyClan's travels.[11]
When Hawkwing is injured, Curlypaw does her best to care for her mentor. They often enjoy patrolling with their Clanmates on hunting trips—until a tragic indident resulting in Pebbleshine's capture by Twolegs occurs.[12] Hawkwing's grief prompts him to wish to leave SkyClan when the Clan continues traveling, but Curlypaw implores her mentor to stay with the Clan, insisting that he's been an amazing mentor.[13] Though he does choose to stay, Hawkwing becomes less engaged in Curlypaw's training, which causes her progress to slow. Realizing that he cares about the apprentice, Hawkwing eventually vows to do better in fairness.[14] In dangerous situations, such as when Curlypaw is almost taken away by a large bird, they work well together as a team, and he saves her life. She is grateful to him for it, but also becomes disillusioned with Clan life after Parsleyseed leaves to become a kittypet.[15]
Though Hawkwing continues training her, she becomes disinterested, which frustrates him.[16] Hawkwing, distracted by caring for Plumwillow's kits, assumes her distraction may be because of being interested in a tom.[19] However, she later informs him that she will be leaving SkyClan for kittypet life, and has already informed her kin. Hawkwing feels betrayed and surmises that he failed as a mentor, though she quickly corrects his assumption—making it clear that she wishes to live a dangerless life, and that she feels StarClan has abandoned SkyClan. In the end, Hawkwing respects the young she-cat's choice, having seen she is mature enough to decide what she wishes for her future if not taking a warrior's vows.[17] The pair wish each other a bittersweet farewell, and though the gray warrior doesn't attempt to stop her from leaving, is prompted to ask Leafstar whether staying at their lake is a good thing, as young cats are leaving.[18]

Fidgetflake & Snipkit[]

"We can't just leave her! We have to find her!"
―Curlykit about Snipkit Hawkwing's Journey, page 199
As kits, Curlykit enjoys the company of her littermates, Fidgetkit and Snipkit. Under Birdwing and Sagenose's loving care, the three kits are happy in SkyClan.[4] By the time she nears six moons, she and her littermates become braver, and are willing to protect the nursery's younger kits when Darktail's group attacks. However, when the Clan is eventually forced to flee, Curlykit leads both Fidgetkit and Snipkit to attempt a river crossing leading them to safety. Snipkit drowns while crossing the water, which Curlykit and Fidgetkit grieve for deeply.[5] Curlykit's grief for Snipkit's death is shared by her family once the kit's body is found washed up on the river's shore.[6]
Curlypaw is passionate about her warrior apprenticeship, though she is proud of her brother Fidgetpaw for being a medicine cat apprentice.[7] She and her brother remain close as SkyClan begins their journey to find ThunderClan, though crossing streams causes the pair hesitation after Snipkit's death.[8] Though Curlypaw continues to enjoy the company of her brother and other Clanmates, she eventually becomes disillusioned with Clan life[16] and decides to leave SkyClan after informing her parents.[17] Though firm in her decision, Curlypaw feels hopeful for the future[18] and is grateful that her kin understands her choice.[17]

Parsleyseed[]

"I met his Twolegs—Parsleyseed calls them 'housefolk'—and they were very kind. Parsleyseed says he has all the delicious food he can eat, and his housefolk let him out whenever he wants, except at night, because then it's his job to guard the Twoleg kit. He thinks he can convince his Twolegs to take in another cat, and I—I want to go!"
―Curlypaw about Parsleyseed to Hawkwing Hawkwing's Journey, pages 361-362
Though she is making good progress in her warrior training,[12] Curlypaw becomes disillusioned with the constant endangerment and traveling SkyClan cats face.[16] When Parsleyseed decides to leave SkyClan and become a kittypet, he announces it to all SkyClan cats, including Curlypaw. Not long after, she decides to visit him in his new home, as she agrees with his logic for leaving— they both feel that the stresses of Clan life are not worth it. After seeing how happy Parsleyseed is with his quality of life, Curlypaw chooses the same path for her future. Though the choice displeases her mentor, Hawkwing, the she-cat feels confident Parsleyseed's Twolegs will accept another cat. Despite Curlypaw's departure to live with Parsleyseed,[17] she wishes the best to her former Clanmates.[18]
