"I came to ask Daisy for help. My mate, Coriander, has started kitting back at the horseplace, and she's having so much trouble. I'm really worried about her, and Daisy once told me that in the Clans there are cats who can help with problems like that. I know I'm not part of your Clan, but I'd be so grateful if you could spare one of those cats, just for a little while."

Chapter description[]

Smoky dashes across the camp as soon as he spots Daisy, and the two greet each other. Daisy feels her Clanmates easing, though the queen picks up Smoky's fear-scent. Squirrelflight questions why Smoky is there. The gray-and-white tom replies that Coriander, his mate, is having trouble kitting, and is in lots of pain. Smoky continues, recalling that Daisy had told him about special cats in each Clan trained for situations like these, and asks for one of ThunderClan's. Squirrelflight hesitates, but then grants him Alderheart, stating that she could never refuse a queen help. Daisy requests that Squirrelflight send Mousewhisker and Sorrelstripe, the former so that he could get to know his father, the latter because Sorrelstripe had recently kitted, and is gentle with kits.
Squirrelflight is okay with this, and runs off to get Alderheart after telling Mousewhisker to fetch Sorrelstripe. Soon, Daisy, Mousewhisker, Sorrelstripe, and Alderheart accompany Smoky to the horseplace to help Coriander. Before this, Smoky confirms with Daisy that the strong white-and-gray tom is their son, his eyes showing with pride. Daisy remembers that Smoky doesn't know of his other kits' deaths, and starts to explain it to him, but Smoky postpones it. They cross WindClan territory, and come across a patrol, with Hootwhisker at the lead.
Hootwhisker greets the cats warmly upon seeing Alderheart, though his voice turns cold once he sees Smoky, asking why a rogue is on WindClan territory. Mousewhisker defends his father, telling Hootwhisker that he is the cat from the horseplace. Crouchfoot playfully scolds his Clanmate, and Hootwhisker apologizes, acknowledging that all cats are on edge in the Clans. Daisy catches Smoky with a confused look on his face, noting that the horseplace cat had no idea what was happening in the Clans.
The patrol arrive at the horseplace, and Mousewhisker heads toward the barn there. Smoky tells him that him and Coriander had to move some other place, and is about to explain further when all the cats hear an earspliting screech. Deducing it must be Coriander, they rush toward the hollow where it had come from.
