Chapter description[]
- Smoky races up the hill and Daisy and the ThunderClan cats followed. At one side of a den, Coriander was struggling to give birth to her kits, and she is in pain. Daisy orders Mousewhisker to keep watch for predators. Alderheart said that everything is going to be fine, but Daisy could hear tension in his voice. When Daisy sees that there was no progress in labor despite all the pain and blood, she realizes there was something seriously wrong. Smoky noticed, too and tried to keep Coriander calm by encouraging her. However, when Coriander says she can not do this, Daisy says that every queen in the world does it, and thinks inwardly except for the ones that did not make it. Sorrelstripe, who was helping kitting got Coriander a stick to bite on when the pain got worse. Alderheart also said that water would help, and Sorrelstripe dashed off to find some.
- Moments later, Coriander raises her head and makes Smoky promise that he will not let Twolegs take their kits, like Floss’s kits have been. However, Daisy thinks that the situation was so bad that it may not be the best idea to not give the kits to the Twolegs, since if Coriander died, the kits had a slim chance of surviving, but Twolegs could care for them safely. Smoky starts saying things they were going to do when the kits were born, but from the tremble from his voice, both he and her knew that Coriander was not going to make it. Soon, Coriander notices it too and tells Smoky to take good care of the kits. Smoky begins to panic and tells Alderheart to do something, and Alderheart gives her some water to drink. Coriander asks Smoky to promise her that he will take good care of the kits without her, and after trying to protest, he promises. Coriander gives birth to 3 kits, but the third one dies the moment it comes out. Smoky says to Coriander to look at the kits they have now, but Coriander does not respond, and she stops breathing. Daisy thinks that she is useless now even outside of ThunderClan, because she wasn’t able to protect Coriander, and the kits were now left motherless. Daisy sadly says to Smoky that Coriander is dead.
