Chapter description[]

Daisy notes that Smoky hadn't moved since the death of his mate Coriander. Alderheart is putting away some herbs, while Daisy and Sorrelstripe dry and clean the kits. The permament queen thinks that the kits should not be without a mother at such an early age, feeling pity. Alderheart tells Daisy that she needs to hunt with Smoky and Mousewhisker for the kits, so the medicine cat can chew up the prey and feed it to them.
The trio follow Smoky, and they return to the horseplace after catching a few mice and a blackbird. Alderheart and Daisy chew up the prey into a pulp and then feed it to the kits. At first, the kits don't recognize that it is food, but after they do, they eat it swiftly and fall asleep. After this, Alderheart tells Smoky that he may have to give the kits up to Twolegs so they can receive milk. Smoky stubbornly holds on to fulfilling Coriander's promise, telling Daisy that he will not go through the pain of knowing his kits are alive and not seeing them. He reprimands Daisy for taking his kits away from his all those moons ago, telling her that he has never had the opportunity to be a proper father.
Smoky instead tells them that a queen by the name of Coco had recently had kits, and may be able to spare some milk. The older cats decide that they will search for Coco first thing next morning, and Daisy, Mousewhisker, and Smoky leave the kits in Alderheart's care as they hunt for prey. After another successful hunting session, the trio returns to the horseplace, and are shocked to see both Alderheart and the kits are not there.
