Chapter description[]

Smoky drops the prey in his mouth, stating aloud that his kits are gone. He questions whether Alderheart had taken them to Twolegs. Daisy puts in that although she has no idea where the kits are, she knows that Alderheart would not take them to Twolegs against their father's will, though the ThunderClan queen doubts herself. Smoky, gripped by panic, wails that he has no kits anymore. Aware of Mousewhisker flinching beside her, Daisy alerts Smoky to Alderheart's scent. Daisy follows the medicine cat's scent all the way to a hollow. Alderheart pokes his head out, yowling that he is there. Smoky exclaims that the kits are okay, while Alderheart explains that a hawk was circling the kits, therefore he had to move. Daisy realizes how much of a danger the situation is for the kits, knowing that she has to make Smoky aware of that. She disperses Mousewhisker and Sorrelstripe to hunt some prey for the kits. Meanwhile, Alderheart explains the custom of a vigil in the Clans, suggesting that Smoky sit vigil for Coriander. The horseplace tom agrees, liking the idea.
Spotting Smoky beside Coriander's body, Daisy walks over to him, commenting that the tom must've loved the dead she-cat very much. Smoky nods, prompting Daisy to ask him if Coriander would do anything to guarantee the kits' survival. Surprised, Smoky replies that she would. The cream-colored she-cat comments that right now, that means giving up the kits to Twolegs, as feeding them prey is a last resort. Smoky admits the logic of his former mate's words, but states that he must do anything to keep his promise to Coriander. Daisy stops trying to persuade him, and says aloud that hopefully the situation will not come to that. The next day, Daisy beckons Mousewhisker to her, telling him to go help Smoky bury Coriander. To herself, she mutters that if that will not make them come together as a father and son should, nothing will. Later, the cats note that they will need Coco to come with them. They leave the kits in Alderheart's possession as they leave to try to find Coco.
Daisy and the others cross into RiverClan territory, careful to stay within three fox-lengths to the lake. The patrol reach the Twolegplace, though Smoky does not know where Coco lives. In a Twoleg nest, a dog barks ferociously, scaring the cats for a moment. Soon, they arrive at a Thunderpath, and they reach a Twoleg nest which Smoky thinks is Coco's. He yowls out the name, but no one answers. They follow Smoky through a barrier, and come across a ginger kittypet. The kittypet tells them to get off his territory or face repercussions. As the rest of the cats prepare for a skirmish, Daisy softly asks for the tom's name. The ginger kittypet introduce himself at Tom-Tom, which causes Daisy to wonder how odd it would be to be named "She-cat-She-cat". Smoky asks if Tom-Tom knew of a kittypet named Coco. The kittypet replies that Coco used to live there, but her Twolegs made her move after kitting.
The cats part way. The patrol reports back to Alderheart, telling him that Coco did not live in that Twolegplace anymore. Smoky decides to hunt for the kits, leaving Daisy and Alderheart alone. The medicine cat reports that the kits are normally asleep for long lengths of time, deeming it as abnormal behavior. Alderheart states that taking them to the SkyClan queen that had recently kitted might be their best hope. Their conversation is interrupted by Smoky, who enters the hollow. Daisy invites Smoky for a walk, wanting a conversation with him. She starts by complimenting the job he's doing with the kits. Smoky bluntly interrupts, stating that they should stop calling the kits "the kits", and name them. Daisy hesitates, telling Smoky that if they do need to give the kits to Twolegs, it will hurt less if Smoky does not name them. Smoky rejects the idea, and is even more furious when he learns that Daisy is planning on taking the kits to SkyClan for proper nursing.
Mousewhisker cuts in, asking if the two wanted some prey. Daisy accepts for the both of them, while Smoky states that he will chew some up for the kits. Alderheart enters, firmly telling Smoky that they will not live much longer if they feed only on prey, and that taking them to SkyClan is the best option. He includes the fact that having them nursed in SkyClan does not mean they have to stay there forever. This convinces Smoky to take them to SkyClan, but Daisy wonders if the kits will make it that far.
