Chapter 1

• Daisy sits in the nursery, unable to eat the mouse in front of her.
• She remembers the scene of Rosepetal and Berrynose's deaths, recapping on the events that had put ThunderClan in their current situation.
  • Daisy recalls that an impostor had found their way inside Bramblestar's body, and after being exposed, was now in a ShadowClan prison, while Squirrelflight and Lionblaze led ThunderClan.
• The she-cat remembers how only one of her kits remained, reminding herself of the five cats who had left ThunderClan on a wander.
• Mousewhisker enters the den, asking Daisy to help out with patrols, as she was doing nothing in the nursery. Daisy accepts this, and exits the nursery.
  • This surprises her Clanmates.
• A half-moon later, Daisy notes that Bristlefrost and Spotfur had gone on a quest to find the Sisters, while noticing the tension between Lionblaze and Squirrelflight.
  • She spots Mousewhisker entering camp, notifying Squirrelflight that Smoky, a cat from the horseplace, wanted to talk to Daisy.
• Squirrelflight replies to keep an eye on the loner, but he can be allowed in.

Chapter 2

• Smoky runs over to Daisy, and they greet each other.
• The gray-and-white tom explains to Squirrelflight that his mate Coriander is having trouble kitting and is in lots of pain.
• Squirrelflight agrees to send cats, so she sends Alderheart, Mousewhisker, and Sorrelstripe to help the kitting queen.
  • On the journey to the horseplace, Daisy tries to break the news of Berrynose and Hazeltail's deaths, but is interrupted by Smoky, who wants to get to the horseplace as fast as possible.
  • They meet a WindClan patrol while on WindClan territory.
• The patrol is curious as to why a rogue is on Clan territory, but eventually lets them pass after knowing that it is the cat from the horseplace.
  • The cats reach the horseplace, and are confused why Coriander and Smoky had to move from their original dens, but they are interrupted by a cry of pain from Coriander.
    • Daisy shares a glance with Alderheart, and concludes that that is not good.

Chapter 3

• Smoky bursts into the hollow where Coriander lays.
  • The other cats follow close behind, Daisy takes a moment to look at the shelter, thinking it must have been a good home for the last harsh leaf-bare.
• Coriander lies in the den, nestled between two tree roots as she struggles to give birth
  • Her mate lies beside her, licking the tortoiseshell queen's ears and reassuring her that help is here.
• Alderheart, Daisy, and Sorrelstripe join the loners, while Mousewhisker awkwardly hangs back.
• Daisy tells her son to stay behind and watch for predators, the tom looking relieved to help in a way that doesn't involve the duties of a queen.
• Alderheart assures to Coriander that she will be ok, confident yet tense.
  • He gives her a juniper berry from his leaf wrap for her to eat to regain her strength.
  • Daisy helps the struggling queen swallow the berry.
• She continues comforting Coriander as her anxiety grows, her and Smoky tell the she-cat how happy she will be once her kits come.
• Sorrelstripe appears with a stick and tells Coriander to bite down on it when the pain gets intense, before running off to get some water.
• As Coriander continues to struggle, she comes to the realization that she will die.
  • She asks Smoky to take care of her kits, saying she'll be happy as long as her kits aren't taken by Nofurs.
    • Smoky protests, but he and Daisy knows the queen's fate is sealed.
  • Coriander gives birth to the first kit.
    • The second one quickly comes, and the third is stillborn.
  • Coriander doesn't respond to Smoky, and he realizes she is dead.
