Twigpaw spots a mouse moving in the background. Her mentor, Sandynose, asks if she's listening, and the she-cat nods, still keeping an eye on the moving mouse. Her mentor's tail twitches, and Sandynose asks Twigpaw if she can see the bird. The apprentice tells her mentor that she can see it, and the the tom tells the she-cat that he wants her to catch the bird. Twigpaw argues with her mentor, telling him that their is a meaty mouse that is much easier to catch than the sparrow. She notes that Ivypool, her former mentor, would have approved of her thinking, but Sandynose tells her that she is a SkyClancat, and that if the tom wants her to catch a mouse, he'll tell her so.
Twigpaw thinks of the ThunderClancamp, and how the ThunderClan cats seemed to be thriving off the prey found on the forest floor. She then glances at her mentor, asking herself why he can't be more like his son, Finpaw. She distractedly thinks that Finpaw, at least, likes her. Sandynose interrupts her thoughts and tells his apprentice to concentrate on catching the sparrow. The tom gives his apprentice advice that mentors would give newly-made apprentices, and Twigpaw is furious about this. Twigpaw thinks about whether Finpaw likes climbing or not, and that it looked like he could climb the Sky Oak in ThunderClan. She notes that even as an apprentice, Finpaw's shoulders were as broad as a warrior's, and tells herself that he is funny, kind, and handsome.
Sandynose irritably asks if Twigpaw is going to stay up there all day. The apprentice realizes that she had stopped, and she climbs further up the tree. The sparrow flies higher, while the she-cat notes that they would already be giving Tinycloud the mouse she had spotted. When Sandynose noisily asks if Twigpaw had caught the bird, the sparrow fluttered higher, while Twigpaw irritably asks Sandynose to quiet down in her mind. The apprentice leaps higher to get a better chance to catch the bird, but the branch she lands on is unstable. It cracks, and she falls. Her mentor yowls in alarm, asking her if she is okay. She informs him that nothing is broken, and the mentor tells her that he is going to get Leafpool to check on her injuries.
Back in the medicine den, Leafpool runs her paws over Twigpaw's spine. She informs Twigpaw and her mentor that nothing is broken, and Sandynose guiltily asks if she will be okay. Leafpool reapproachingly tells him that she was lucky, and that there are easier ways to catch prey. Twigpaw quickly tells her that she feels fine, and the medicine cat feels some swelling on her head. Twigpaw mutters that she must have hit her head when she fell, and guiltily adds to her mentor that she isn't much of a SkyClan cat. Sandynose tells her that all that matters is that Twigpaw is hurt. Leafpool informs both of them that Twigpaw should stay in camp for a day or two.
Finpaw barges in the den asking what happened to Twigpaw. Leafpool informs him that Twigpaw fell out of a tree. Finpaw, eyes wide with worry, asks his denmate if she's okay. Twigpaw's heart soars at the sight of him, and replies that she's fine. Leafpool tells the cats that she has to go to collect herbs, and that someone should stay with Twigpaw. Finpaw volunteers, as does his father, but the medicine cat tells Sandynose that it is better for Twigpaw if she has someone her own age to distract her from her shock. Finpaw asks Twigpaw why she was up a tree. Twigpaw responds, telling him that Sandynose wanted him to hunt like a SkyClan cat. The tom reminisces about how his father is making everyone act like a gorge cat, when in fact, they are lake cats. He brings up the idea to learn how to swim, but Twigpaw dismisses that, telling Finpaw that they should leave swimming to RiverClan cats.
Twigpaw guesses that change may be hard for older cats. She reminisces about her time in ThunderClan and how she tried to show Graystripe a new hunting method, but he just said that a mouse is a mouse. Finpaw tells her that he is glad that SkyClan doesn't have elders, and tells Twigpaw that Fallowfern is only deaf, not old. The tom tells his denmate about how all the warriors are always talking about the gorge, and Twigpaw agrees, asking him why they can't look forwards instead of backwards. She tells him how great it is that SkyClan is beside the lake, and that the tom is going to love it beside the lake. Twigpaw tells him how she wished that she could show him around ThunderClan territory. She then remembers about the spot that she and her sister used to play at when they were kits.
She tells him of a good spot to play that she thinks is on SkyClan territory. Twigpaw tells Finpaw that Violetpaw and her used to go there to play. Finpaw questions that he thought they weren't allowed to play after Violetpaw went to ShadowClan, but Twigpaw said that she didn't tell him because Leafpool was there. Finpaw asks if they can go now, and Twigpaw eventually agrees. They sneak out, and the tom asks the she-cat why she didn't want Leafpool to know. Twigpaw responds telling him that Alderheart and Needletail took them there and she didn't want Alderheart to get in trouble. Finpaw acknowledges that Twigpaw murmurs that she misses her sister, as she was the only kin she knew about then. Finpaw asks if the she-cat misses her sister now, and Twigpaw replies saying yes, but privately thinks that she has the tom all to herself.
While following the path to Twigpaw's special place, they came across a tom and a she-cat. They hide and hear Tigerheart and Dovewing conversing about their love for each other. Twigpaw tells Finpaw that they need to leave, and they go shortly. As they head back towards SkyClan's camp, joking about how they should put a frog in Dewpaw's nest. Finpaw agrees, as long as the she-cat carries the frog back. Twigpaw tells him that she will put a frog in his nest, and Finpaw dares her to. She informs him that he should never dare a SkyClan cat, and privately thinks that she is a SkyClan cat.
